SET SPRING

Earlier this month, the incomparable Satoshi Tomiie graced the decks at Canopy Bar for a recent Autobrennt showcase. As the sun began setting over Brooklyn and the Manhattan skyline shimmered in the distance, Satoshi kicked off a stunning set--a divine selection of rooftop vibes that kept the crowds grooving until the very last minute. Fortunately, Satoshi was able to record his gem of a mix for those who were unable to attend the intimate gathering over Labor Day weekend. Clocking in at 90 minutes, the set is part one of a two-part, 3-hour mix. In the meantime, enjoy this aural vacation from beginning to end.

The attentive followers among you will have probably seen <a href="http://www.fabriclondon.com/artist/view/samul" rel="nofollow" target="_blank">Samu.l</a>'s name on a few of our flyers over the past few years. He's played across all of our three floors repping his ever evolving expression of house and techno as the setting demands. He's evidently an artist with talent. He's been asked by Shenoda, Hector &amp; Jay Tripwire to remix their original productions as well as being picked up by One Records and Dogmatik for releases. With recommendations from some of the best in the game and an ever building repertoire of standout releases under his belt, we're happy to have Samu.l returning to Room One this March (7th March) where he joins Magda and Craig Richards in Room One. 

Samu.l dropped us a line the other week, offering us a taste of an exclusive new mix that demonstrates what records are at the top of his bag at the moment. It’s also a great insight into what we can expect from his set in just over a week's time, so of course we snapped him up on his offer and are happy to be able to present his selections here.

Javier Garin is an argentinean DJ and passionate vinyl collector whose journey with music and DJing began in the mid-1980s. He started out working in radio stations in the Buenos Aires suburbs alongside renowned broadcaster Diego Poso, and by the early 1990s, he was already performing in clubs like the legendary Mirage in El Palomar.

After taking a break to complete his studies and become a certified public accountant, he returned to music in 1997, becoming a resident DJ for five years in a nightclub in Miramar. In 2003, he moved to El Calafate, where he quickly became a pioneer of the local electronic scene. He launched a party series at The Grouse, blending funk, disco, synth pop, and house, and by 2004, hosted the city's first ever electronic music event, a cycle that ran for four years.

Between 2004 and 2008, he also curated a monthly event at Shackleton Lounge, with a music style geared toward the influx of international tourists. In 2010, he founded House Me, a weekly Wednesday night series at Don Diego de la Noche, known for its 5-hour extended sets. By 2016, House Me became a traveling event, featuring top national artists such as Carlos Alfonsín, Dee Jason, Dr. Trincado, Facu Carri, Tato Piatti, and Manuel Sahagún.

Since the pandemic, Javier has also turned his focus to music production, collaborating with local DJs and musicians from El Calafate. His career reflects a deep dedication to vinyl culture, musical diversity, and building community through sound.

'Number One'

This might be the most leftfield release Worship has put out since those early years of releases. Who would have thought that these two unruly producers would have linked up for a collaboration like this? We did, and we present the musical evidence to prove it right here with their debut release entitled ‘Number One’.

Tanner Ross (Dirtybird, Freerange, !k7, Soul Clap Recordings) and Rob Paine (Worship, Leftroom, Sha-boom, Large Recordings) met upstairs from the Worship Recordings home base at a goodie warehouse event they both performed at. Burning the midnight oil into the breakfast hours together they created a foundation for a friendship that is still going strong 3 years later.

The original mix of ‘Number One’ was created only a few months after Tanner & Rob’s first encounter. Both in foreign territory never working together in the studio, they didn’t know where this was going to go at first. But they both left their egos at the door and learned to trust each other as the ideas and techniques soon developed. Knowing the styles each other has from their previous releases, you can easily hear the influential tones of both of these artists on this track. Big ups to the Don Gorgon DJ Ninjaman for his contribution.

‘Number One (Dub)’ keeps that same dub driven bass line and tight punaany drums the original possess but gives Ninjaman a break on the vocals and dubs out the drums and hits weaving in and out of the track. This rendition still gives you that same crazy fucking horn lick (no other way to describe it) and glorious tech stabs at the half way point. Intended for the heads who aren’t so much into reggae vocals but love the feel of dub.

For the purist, we had to include the ‘Number One (Version)’ track to seal up the trinity. If you know reggae music then there is no need to read any further. If not here is the Urban Dictionary definition of ‘version’: “An instrumental ver-sion of a reggae song often dubbed onto the B-side of a single. Sometimes DJs would rap or ‘toast’ over top of these versions. Through the studio manipulation and experimentation of such figures as King Tubby, Augustus Pablo and Lee ‘Scratch’ Perry this practice grew into the reggae subgenre known as dub.”

All we ask is that you go into this one with an open mind. It will make you smile if nothing else. ☺

Worship Recordings was established in the summer of 1998 in Philadelphia by Rob Paine. The concept was simple at first: they just wanted to put out their own music their own way. After the first few releases it became clear that they had dropped in on a genre of house music that has slowly but surely come to fruition, now being labeled by the massive as "dub house". They knew they were not the first to use the influence of Jamaican reggae music as a foundation for their house productions, but they definitely wanted to continue to push it to new heights in both the house community and progressive reggae scene. 

What started out as an in-house production label, Worship soon started to sign like- minded artists such as: Garth, Chris Udoh, Pete Moss, Solomonic Sound, Hakan Lidbo, Jay Tripwire and Grant Dell- just to name a few. Some Worship releases are more dub than house and vice versa - but all releases are pure quality. From the music’s production quality to the legendary KLH art work and right down to the packaging, Worship Recordings is never slacking. They continue to explore new methods of using reggae and house music side by side to reach lovers of both sounds and to unite them in the dance hall as ONE.
