The latest from 2014 Latin Grammy nominee, Mister G. An all-original, indie, bilingual album featuring Latin superstars from around the world. Available worldwide on June 23, from Coil Records. 

Dubbed a “kid-friendly, bilingual rock star” by The Washington Post, Mister G enlisted dozens of his compadres to collaborate on the album. The result is a unique fusion of salsa, jazz, Tejano, bolero, folk and rock featuring major Latin luminaries from around the world.

Recorded in studios as far flung as New York, Los Angeles, Buenos Aires, Miami, San Francisco, Amsterdam, San Antonio, and Boston, Los Animales is a true multicultural, international project.  Some of the biggest names in Latin Jazz lend their virtuosic talents to the album, including 4-time GRAMMY award winning pianist Arturo O’Farrill, 3-time GRAMMY award winning bassist Oscar Stagnaro, and 2-time GRAMMY winning drummer, Vince Cherico.

The album kicks off with the electrifying piano playing of Arturo O’Farrill on the title track, accompanied by Mister G’s driving acoustic guitar, and a chorus of bilingual children.  Next up is “Vamonos” (Let’s Go), a celebratory song about visiting the zoo, which begins by posing the question, “¿Cuál es tu animal favorito?” (What’s your favorite animal?).  “Siete Elefantes” is a counting song brimming with traditional Latin percussion instruments (timbale, guira, bongos, congas); the music video was animated by Argentinean-based collaborators who have created several videos for Mister G (Cocodrilo, The Bossy E).

The captivating Tejano sounds of “La Rana” (The Frog), and “El León y la Luna” (The and the Moon), were recorded in San Antonio by 13-time GRAMMY winning producer/engineer Gilbert Velasquez.  The rich, playful vocal styling of the great Cuban singer, Estrella Acosta, enlivens both tunes. “Baila Como Las Hormigas” (Dance Like the Ants) is a full-blown fiesta written and recorded in Miami with GRAMMY-winning, Puerto Rican salsa artist, Marlow Rosado. “Buenos Noches” (Good Night), a duet with Brazilian singer Mari Nobre, sends young listeners off to sleep for a night of sweet, animal-filled dreams.  Acclaimed Mexican artist Marcos Almada Rivero created the folkloric-inspired original art for the album.

One of the leading figures in the children’s music world, Mister G had an award-winning career performing for adults prior to earning a masters degree in elementary education and focusing on making music for children.  Awarded the first songwriting scholarship in the history of Berklee College of Music, Mister G is a prolific writer, and Los Animales is his 6th release for children in the last six years.  He regularly headlines major venues throughout the US including the Metropolitan Museum of Art (New York), Hard Rock Café (Philadelphia), Coolidge Corner Theatre (Boston), The Getty Museum (Los Angeles), National Zoo (Washington, DC), and Chicago Botanic Garden (Chicago).  A national tour follows the release of Los Animales, which will continue into Latin America in 2016.

Los Animales will be available from Mister G’s website (www.mistergsongs.com), Amazon, iTunes, and other retailers in June.  All pre-release sales of Los Animales will be donated to The Humane Society of the United States and Mexico.

Martin Luther King dreamed of a worldwide love that transcended race, religion, and background. Patty Griffin gave melody to that vision in this song — and in this soaring, gospel-infused rendition, Kellerman takes listeners again to the mountain peak, lifted upwards by full band, choir, and the lush colors of his flute.

04 Up To The Mountain

THE LONG ROAD

Kellerman composed this piece as a biographical tribute to Nelson Mandela, seeking to paint Madiba’s story through colors drawn purely from solo flute. 
Here, he describes the piece’s journey through the life of the great South African leader: 
It starts with his childhood, growing up in rural Transkei, where he was very close to nature and spent time in the fields herding cattle. When writing the song, I was thinking of him sitting by his flock, listening to the beautiful sounds of nature, which even then must have been tinged with a touch of sadness, showing what was to come in his life. 
The middle section of the piece starts when he moves to Johannesburg. The peacefulness of nature makes space for the hustle and bustle of city life, as well as a train of events that would take control of his life and gather a momentum of its own. The percussive nature of this section indicates the runaway train of events, and the bits of the flute and vocal percussion is indicative of the influence that Ghandi’s idea of peaceful resistance had in his life at the time. 
In the last section, Mandela retires and finally has time to spend with his family and be peaceful again. The piece ends on an unfinished note, showing that even though his life is over, his influence and memory will carry on and sustain us far into the future.

12 The Long Road

The love of brotherhood, whether forged by blood or circumstance, can be unbreakable. Just look at the partnership forged between Kellerman and his Winds of Samsara collaborator, Ricky Kej, as proof of how mutual respect and admiration can span oceans and result in beautiful works of art — including this powerful and uplifting track, which the team composed, recorded, and produced together across thousands of miles. “Aishwarya” tells the story of a young country girl seemingly destined for a simple life of domesticity. Instead, she summons the courage to disrupt tradition and defy expectations, to leave her home and study, to build a better life for herself, her family, and her community. This beautiful arrangement speaks to the love we must have for ourselves in order to make great risks — and follow even greater dreams.

SI DO MHAIMEO

This traditional Irish song speaks of a young man on the verge of marrying an older woman for her wealth. Will he marry her, the song asks, and will he drink away her fortune as soon as he gains it? Kellerman weaves this tongue-in-cheek tale with jaunty and playful flights of flute and orchestra.
