Soundway records present a unique record: a modern, haunting take on Sudanese music heard through the sonic lens of French artist / producer, Débruit and the poetic, ethereal lyrics and melodies of Sudanese-born singer Alsarah.

Aljawal (The Traveller) is a nomadic reflection for the 21st century. Each song reflects a new stop in the journey, with new cities and new people along the way. When Alsarah first heard Débruit's music she sensed and recognised a fellow traveller through the space and geography of his influences, a sense of time and history coupled with a forward-thinking futuristic outlook.

Born in the capital city of Sudan, Khartoum, Alsarah spent the first 8 years of her life here before she relocated to Taez, Yemen with her family to escape the ever-stifling regime in her native country. She abruptly moved to the US in 1994, when a brief civil war broke out in Yemen, and has lived there to this day.  

Xavier Thomas revealed Débruit in 2008 with 2 sold out 12″s for his and Fulgeance’s Parisian “Musique Large” imprint. Three more EPs on Civil Music followed that included his hit 'Nigeria What'. Piquing interest from the likes of XLR8R, Fact Mag, Benji B and Gilles Peterson his debut album ‘From The Horizon’ came out last year. His dazzling live electronics show has taken him around the world, from Russia to New York, Glastonbury to Sonar. 

On Aljawal he managed to capture and play with an analog sound that stretched the boundaries of the Sudanese rhythms and melodies that Alsarah had grown up with. A unique record was imagined and is finally presented here after a 2 year interplay of ideas and interaction between France and Brooklyn: Alsarah’s adopted home.

A mix i knocked up for Eddy TM's Remix show on Xfm - 100 tracks in 10 mins. one track is missing from this mp3, i'd say guess which one but i doubt the tracklist would fit in this box.

  addendum: just checked and the missing track is actually in there, i'd point out the tracks in the comment section but again i doubt there's enough room - if anyone else wants to do a bit of spotting though be my guest.

Wrongtom Meets Deemas J "Supersharpteng"

"UK Allstars (Congo Natty meetys Benny Page - Radio Edit)" featuring Tenor Fly, Top Cat, General Levy, Tippa Irie, Sweetie Irie and Daddy Freddy, taken from the album "Jungle Revolution", to be released on Big Dada Recordings, 1 July 2013. 

Congo Natty aka Rebel MC has a career dating back to his early hit with Double Trouble, "Street Tuff," but is probably most respected as one of the pioneers of Jungle - perhaps the first uniquely UK-born bass music. 

"Jungle Revolution" features the whole of the extended Congo Natty family and was mixed with Adrian Sherwood. Clearly showing this Rasta's belief that Jungle is a re-boot of roots reggae for a new century, the record is full of blood and fire, the sternum-buzz of sub-bass, rapid fire drum breaks, sweet hooks, righteous anger and professions of religious fervour. It’s the kind of passionate, committed, raw and spiritual, beautiful record that doesn’t come along every day.  

To celebrate this release, we are streaming the track "UK Allstars," which features a who's who of British soundsystem culture. This is the first time ever that this line up have all appeared on one track together and so also marks a historic coming together of a scene which lies at the roots of so much of what we now take for granted in UK music, from dubstep to grime to drum & bass and beyond.

Wrongtom is a record producer and dj from South London, now residing in the not-so-trendy reaches of the east end, he spends his days playing with tape echo and watching B-movies in his makeshift studio hidden away in a converted nunnery.

Spanning over a decade, Tom’s career has covered a colourful patchwork of styles from Dancehall to Indie-Pop with the likes of Rockabilly, Dub, Ghettotech and Free Jazz filling the gaps in between. Starting out as a percussionist playing on records for Bob Jones’ Black On Black label and Kingsize Records, Tom soon taught himself to produce with some hand-me-down analogue gear and a cracked copy of Cubase, his early productions bridging the gap between new school breaks and old freestyle-electro records.

Somewhere down the line he got tangled in the web of pop music and in no time was touring the land with spiky soul boys Hard-Fi playing seemingly inappropriate records to thousands of indie kids which came to it’s ilogical conclusion on stage at Wembley Arena as 10,000 perplexed punters listened to a selection of B-More, Shut Up & Dance and Italo House classics. Through Hard-Fi, Tom notched up production credits on a UK number 1 LP and paved the way for his reggae/dub collective Stoneleigh Mountain Rockers, with whom he’s worked on projects for Trojan Records, Pama International (featuring 2 Tone luminary Lynval Golding) and now with UK rap legend Roots Manuva.

As a dj Tom’s traveled the world from Shanghai to Southampton playing in a variety of venues including sweaty basements, churches and even a former Yugoslavian army barracks, the bakery of the barracks in fact. Not content with subjecting the world to his record collection in the dance, he’s also tormented the airwaves via experimental station Resonance FM for a few years with his radio partner Mr Trick.

With his latest album with Roots Manuva in the can, you can expect a couple of new projects in the not so distant future, no doubt filling in a few more genre gaps on his CV in the process.
