Unless you've been hiding under your Grandmother’s electric blanket for the past few weeks – or sensibly departed for warmer climes - you may have noticed things are still rather grey and chilly outside. Yes, as those gloomy folk on Game Of Thrones predicted, winter did indeed arrive and unfortunately seems unwilling to leave of its own accord.  So, with one eye on the thermometer we’ve decided to take matters into our own hands and warm ourselves up with a hot mix from Russian born Brookylnite, Serge Devant. 

Serving as the heat seeking cousin of the more famous ‘rain dance’, Serge’s sections are the the tonic we’ve been looking for in these meteorologically dreary times and follow on from a number of auspicious studio efforts that have seen him moving souls and soles the world over. 

Plotting the biggest of 2016s – he kickstarted his year with the Always On My Mind EP for Crosstown Rebels – we think you’ll be hard pushed to many artists who will blow up in a bigger way this summer. So if you want to stay one step ahead of the curve and remain you’re friends go to guy or gal when it comes to all things contemporary house, you know what to do.

Heavily influenced by the '90s, the music of Serge Devant recalls a time when artists like the Prodigy, Underworld, and Carl Cox ruled the dancefloor. During the 1990s, the Russian native and Music School of Saint Petersburg graduate was living in New York City, hanging out at the legendary Twilo club, falling in love with music, and deciding that DJing was his future.

Releasing off the acclaimed label Crosstown Rebels, his latest 'Always On My Mind' EP made waves. Alongside his work on Crosstown Rebels, he's released off Emerald City and Rebellion - two labels known for their ripe output of deep tech and house tunes. In terms of performances, you can catch him at El Row Sundays in Spain, featuring Marco Carola and Crazy P, and a variety of other artists.

Already a well-established presence on the outlandish fringes of experimental, alternative and dance music, celebrated Israeli duo Red Axes make a surprise left-turn onto Phantasy with a three-track 12”, ‘Sipoor’. Unsurprisingly, the results are as pleasingly out-there as the occasion requires. 

Following on from last year’s self-released LP, ‘The Beach Goths’, ‘Sipoor’ immediately announces the Axes’ uncompromising return to the front and centre of the dancefloor with the raw, provocative ‘Bad Time Story’. Brazen, brash acid triggers this particular tale, as Red Axes briskly modulate their way through a ruff, tuff but never less than musical landscape of 303s and 808s. 

‘Sipoor’ takes a more gradual approach to building offbeat rave tension, featuring an unknown male using his native tongue to request some kind of house, some kind of techno and some sort of release. His wish (and we hope, yours) is the Axes’ command, as the music goes deep before seamlessly unfolds around a throbbing bassline and a playful, familiar keyboard sample, beckoning feet to the dancefloor and perhaps tongues ever so slightly to cheeks. 

Concluding the 12”, ‘Teroof’ takes each of Red Axes’ signature ingredients - deeply rhythmic EBM-inspired drums, spiralling electronics, unapologetically odd vocal distortions - and reconstructs them amid what sounds like the Monaco Grand Prix, as high-velocity motors speed past the soundscape, kicking up some serious dust.

Always making, playing and releasing music that is creative and original with real character, his productions and sets range from house to melodic techno but always with an air of experimentation.The fantastic album features eleven melodically charged and ready to fire productions that flex their sonic muscles across a backdrop of deep techno, acid house and micro house. The whole thing was made on a Korg Prologue and a TR-08 and carries many usual traits of the Italian producer’s sound, from subtle nostalgia to a fresh contemporary snap.It is the rumbling bass and spine tinglingly delicate synth work of deep roller ‘Satisfaction’ that opens things up with real meaning. The acid laced and expansive ‘Wheel of Fortune’ then brings broken drum rhythms and swiftly paced percussion. The excellent ‘Vienna’ is a dub techno epic, with vast rubber kicks and Detroit soul in the synths that really get you on your toes, while ‘Keep On’ picks up the pace with crisp drum programming and future facing styles.Elsewhere, ‘Consciousness’ strips things back to a warm, dubbier and more heady vibe that is perfect for cosy dance floors, serene cut ‘Black Gloves’ is a warm deep techno masterpiece and ‘Club Horses’ is a moodier piece but with equally majestic melodies and broken drum rhythms and swiftly pacing percussion. The timeless techno trip ends on yet another side of Olivotto’s style with ‘Dazed,’ a full flavour track with rugged synths stepping up and down the scales and ending things on a determined and positive groove.Whether you like things laid back and relaxed, or thumping from start to finish, this is an essential album that real journeys deep into many different, equally emotive styles.
