The Montreal-based artist brings his signature introspective touch to the label with a sumptuous four-tracker. ‘One Day’ leads the EP, offering up a deep journey, which fuses tribal rhythms, delicate atmospheric touches and an emotive, entrancing synth-line.

‘Evolution’ expands on the ethereal feel with beautifully textured synth work and lush chords, building slowly with soothing atmosphere and a similarly captivating ambiance.

‘Rise & Fall’ takes a fresh turn, contrasting hope and eery tension in a beautiful arpeggiated melody that evolves throughout the track, offering up a vibrant trip to new lands.

Closing out the EP on an optimistic note is ‘Around Me’, which once again showcases sublime rhythms and intricate melodies in an uplifting finish to the release.

Madloch’s Sound Avenue enters 2022’s second quarter by welcoming Jean Calliou back to the label for a new EP. First emerging in 2016, the Swiss artist quickly established himself with releases via Magician On Duty, RYNTH, Sag & Tre and Underyourskin Records, where his deep, melodious sound flourished. Moving forward, July of 2019 saw the Zurich resident make his Sound Avenue debut with a well-received remix of Joe Miller’s ‘The Days’. Deep and enchanting in equal measure, its organic vibe immediately won over DJs and fans alike, sparking what has been a fruitful relationship between the Belgian imprint and Swiss artist. Now on the strength of 2021’s ‘Departure Unknown’, Jean makes a welcome return to Sound Avenue with a sprawling five-track showcase entitled ‘Simplon’.

Beginning with the title selection, Jean furthers the sentiment that his compositions drift above the rest of existence. Whether it’s the hauntingly layered musical fragments or the sleek, meditative framework which houses his dusty percussive arrangements, there is a whimsical lean to his work that you just can’t ignore. The deliberate groove and haunting vocal phrases of ‘Down’ find Jean at his creative best. Perhaps less direct than some of his previous work, the end result is one of equal depth, where notes ring out in timeless suspension, resonating against a backdrop of colourful electronics. Meanwhile, ‘Feathered Serpent’ lightens the mood with its charismatic charm and laid back, yet youthful exuberance. Jean’s masterful coaxing of incandescent tones, soulful plucks and rolling organics fuels what is a charming eight-minute jaunt. 

Bypassing the collection’s halfway point are the slow burning vibes of ‘Hora’. Four minutes of glacial grooves and shape-shifting textures put the listener in a tranquil state, only to go further down the meditative rabbit hole as thoughtful vocal fragments and drone-like lines emerge for a suitably spaced-out finale. ‘Myst’ sits as the collection's most heartfelt composition and appropriately lands as its fifth and final selection. Wavy arps, fluttery sonics and creamy piano stabs unite for a reflective storyboard, one which invites you to surrender to its captivating power and ultimately puts a stamp on this resounding collection.

Our latest White Sand EP comes from acclaimed Spanish producer Pedro Sanmartín, who has created a flurry of lush soundscapes that rise and fall in intensity, driven forwards by snaking melodies and ethereal chords.

The opening track ‘White Sand', from which the release derives its name, exemplifies Pedro's mastery of taking his listeners on a journey.

As clipped vocal samples echo in the background, he teases and then releases beautiful modular synth lines, all the while playing with evocative pads to create a listening experience that is nostalgic yet beautiful, refined yet loose.

His dub version of the title track follows next on the EP, and builds on his already stellar work. Now with added weight to the kick drum, the track feels heavier, but also more pared back. Pedro trades in some of the more prominent melodies from the original version for a mix that centers itself around its percussion, with the result being six straight minutes of groove that will perfectly soundtrack many Mediterranean sunsets this summer.

On ‘Atlantis', the producer delivers a sweeping, dreamlike funk that will fill any dancefloor. Glittering arpeggios are punctuated by thick, stabbing base notes, creating an irresistible combination. The drums are simple and allow the gorgeous, shimmering melodies space to breathe, while being bouncy enough to push the rhythm forwards.

For remix duties, we've recruited Plecta and Nhar, who each take their turns at offering their own unique spin on the Spaniard's original productions.

Nhar goes straight for the kill with his French House inspired remix of ‘Atlantis'. Featuring a disco-tinged groove, combined with a stiff beat and repeating bassline, he establishes an intoxicating rhythm straight away that does not let up for a full eight minutes.

Meanwhile, Plecta introduces soaring, hypnotic vocals to ‘White Sand', creating an entirely new atmosphere, something altogether more lyrical and mysterious. But rather than soften the original track up, he adds new rolling djembe drums and a new swing that makes Plecta's take immediately danceable.
