Four years ago National Public Radio signed Mumia Abu-Jamal to do regular commentaries from death row, an agreement NPR quickly rescinded to satisfy conservatives whose support NPR has no hope of ever getting anyway. Six of these political commentaries appear on this new release from Alternative Tentacles.

Abu-Jamal doesn't discuss his actions the night Officer Daniel Faulkner was killed, but he does speak clearly and coherently on prison, police brutality (such as an incident where Philadelphia Police demolished the house of a Mount Airy woman in the name of the drug war) and African-American life. In "Father Hunger" he notes what the lack of black fathers has created in prison: "Those unloved find it virtually impossible to love, and those who were fatherless find themselves alienated and at war with their own communities and families."

The album includes brief testimonials from Allen Ginsburg and Alternative Tentacles founder Jello Biafra, two of the many celebrities who have defended Abu-Jamal...The liner notes feature the now-standard litany of complaints against the cops and prosecution in Abu-Jamal's 1982 trial. One album alone won't convert Abu-Jamal's many detractors, but people on either side of this case should take the opportunity to hear Abu-Jamal in his own words, and in his own voice.

Over the last generation, the United States prison systems have grown at a rate unparalleled in history, creating what many call a Prison Industrial Complex. What happens to our legal system, our Constitution, our democracy, when a substantial part of the population feel it in their economic self-interest to lock up more and more people for longer and longer sentences? Which industries are a part of the Prison Industrial Complex? How are they profiting from prisons? And how are they using their power to affect criminal law and public opinion? How are people organizing to stop or slow prison growth? What is prison abolition?

To the extent we think about these questions at all, it is because of the tireless work of Angela Davis. She has toured the country for the last decade speaking out against prison expansion, and she was the prime mover behind the 1997 conference Critical Resistance: Beyond the Prison Industrial Complex, which drew over 3,500 participants to Berkeley, California.

This 1997 talk from Boulder, Colorado offers a succinct yet compelling argument that the time to stop prison expansion is now. Angela Davis is a legendary speaker, known for the clarity & subtlety of her thought and the compelling compassion of her delivery.

Aside from talking about the Prison Industrial Complex, Angela Davis discusses the evils of Nike, corporate crimes, the demonization of immigrants, and crimes against the environment, amongst other issues.

While discussing the name of the album to BBC Radio 1Xtra presenter Charlie Sloth, Lowkey said: "It comes from my position in the game is as an artist, trying to do my thing independently. It is a struggle - it's not easy. We have barriers placed in front of us at every single level. And so we have to fight for everything we get. As an artist I've never had anything put on a plate for me. I've had to struggle to put my music out there." And also added that; "it's about the widest struggle that I am part of, which what I feel is to wake people up to the humanity of people that we are sort of encouraged to ignore every day." On the subject of the album, Lowkey commented that: "The album has just got a lot of heartfelt music that is really and truly an expression of me. Say I died tomorrow, I want this album to be the last thing I say to the world and I want people to remember it and to recognize it as me. No one else." Later on he added "This album might change how people see the music industry and how its been destroyed, please wake up."
Track 8 off the album, "Dreamers", premiered on BBC Radio 1Xtra on 24 September 2011. Lowkey described the meaning of the song: "The track is about people with mental illness. Because I've known people that have issues with mental illnesses and is quite common. Like I say at the beginning there is people that see things that aren't there, and ask why not. Because they see further than a lot of people that are perceived as normal." Track 22, "Obama Nation (Pt. 2)" samples a lyric from the political hip hop song "Words I Never Said" by Lupe Fiasco, which Lowkey got permission to use via the social networking and microblogging service Twitter by Lupe
