Nevada City Ecstatic Dance Set 2016

The bus bounced as it rolled along the dusty road. The passengers looked out onto the lush green plains on the other side of the glass. Wildlife flourished for as fas as the eye could see. Tall giraffes marched proudly, their heads poking between the branches of leafy trees. Birds flew through the royal blue sky casting dim shadows back down to earth. It was a scene of majestic beauty and wonder. This was excursion Africanism and they were on tour.

While some might consider DES a newer artist, he has been on the scene as early as 2012 with his massive single on Moveltraxx, Jumpin Duck. With remixes from Lazy Ants, DJ Earl, Javier Estrada, Vatican Swag and Oui’wack (now Wiwek), Jumpin Duck was a heavy-hitter.   With his last release in 2014 on the Tunacat Label REBIRTH, DES now returns with Milan / Florence, a heavy Afro-bass EP on VOODOO REBEL inspired by a trip from his hometown Milan to VR’s headquarter Florence, with three original tracks and three remixes.   
The EP moves between DES’s banging electro house sound and VR’s more tropical, experimental sound, with remixes from global bass heavy-hitter’s Motin, the Italian Balera Favela ambassador prp, Tunacat’s Boogaloo & Bizt. The title track creates the right tension with a tribal African chant that transforms into a subdriven, powerful cumbia/breakbeat track. Ramen & Churches stands out as the most wild track on the EP, with a high-pitched synth and batucadas on a loopy chant. Florence / Milan is a slow moombahton track, where the Brazilian berimbau meets a digiridoo for a mystical, middle-Eastern feel. 
On the remix side, Motin gives us a superb remix of Florence / Milan, creating a minimal moombahton track. Prp’s remix of Ramen & Churches drives the dance floor into a middle-Eastern journey, with six vibe-heavy minutes of intense teleportation. Last but not least, Boogaloo & Bizt turn the original into a groovy house tune, driven by a hypnotic synth and an irresistible drum pattern.

A little bit more than one and a half years after the release of the underground hit single “La Añoranza”, a collaboration featuring Coco Maria, Dengue Dengue Dengue and Ori Kaplan, Daniel Haaksman is back with a new song partnership with the Mexican singer. Building on the  success of “La Añoranza”, Berlin ́s tropical bass pioneer asked Coco Maria for a new vocal contribution to one of his personal all time favourite songs, the 1970s classic “Porque Te Vas” (Spanish for “Because you are leaving"), originally sung by Jeanette. A romantic ballad, it deals with the pain of parting. Its lyrics speak of a loss, of an abandonment and have been described as conveying a sense of longing. For Coco Maria, the song also reflects on her recent relocation from Berlin to Amsterdam. She begins singing: "Hoy en mi ventana brilla el sol y el corazón se pone triste contemplando la ciudad, porque te vas" ("Today the sun shines in my window and the heart gets sad contemplating the city, because you're leaving").The refrain features the lyrics: "Todas las promesas de mi amor se irán contigo/Me olvidarás/Me olvidarás/Junto a la estación yo lloraré igual que un niño/Porque te vas" ("All of my love's promises will go with you/You will forget me/You will forget me/Beside the station I will cry like a child/Because you are leaving"). Contrary to public reception the song is not song with a question mark, "¿Por qué te vas?" or "Porqué te vas" ("Why are you leaving?"). More the contrary, it ́s an assumption, “Because You Are Leaving”. It ́s more of a “Come on”, she, the abandoned, has assumed it. Through Coco Maria ́s subtle voice and Daniel ́s trance-synths carried arrangement and dembow groove, the new version gives the classic a fresh, 21st century update.

La atmósfera de El Rito es hipnótica y percutiva. Se pueden identificar sonoridades de distintos lugares del mundo como samples de música hindú de los 60, percusiones afrolatinas, melodías y capas con sintetizadores que caracterizan el sonido de DJ Raff. El beat, creado con un drum machine y generadores de ruido filtrados y secuenciados, evoca el ritmo jaimaquino del dembow.

El arte de la portada y el trabajo visual sobre la música estuvo a cargo del diseñador y artista visual chileno DMNC (Francisco Meneses), quien se inspiró en la Apacheta, ofrenda que realizan los pueblos originarios de los Andes de América del Sur a la Pachamama u otras deidades, y que consiste en crear montículos de piedras colocadas en forma cónica una sobre otra. Estas ofrendas, se encuentran generalmente en las cuestas difíciles de los caminos.

DJ Raff sobre El Rito:

"He estado componiendo canciones con un eje central repetitivo y monótono, dándole siempre un pequeño giro armónico pero casi disonante al finalizar el loop, esto con el fin de crear una especie de período con un comienzo y final de tensión. A esta columna vertebral percutiva e hipnótica, le agrego algunas melodías casi siempre sobre acordes menores que me producen una especie de nostalgia pero a la vez calidez. Compuse El Rito pensando en ese trance que puede demandar esfuerzo físico, puede ser doloroso incluso, pero al final abre la cabeza y te lleva a un lugar desconocido hasta ese momento."

DMNC sobre El Rito:

"Me inspire en la Apacheta, me pareció interesante abordar lo sagrado con algo tan común como una piedra. Además el tema en sí es algo bien tribal y me genera este sentimiento ancestral. En algún punto el tema deja entrever los paisajes extensos del altiplano y lo onírico de una cultura ancestral. Me pareció interesante abordar un espacio silvestre y darle movimiento a algo que en un contexto real está quieto como es la naturaleza.

Las materialidades son claves al momento de desarrollar esta pieza gráfica tan sensible y armónica, los elementos naturales poseen esa sensibilidad que logra conectar con las personas de una forma más personal como es el sol, la naturaleza o el agua."
