"Five years after the first volume, ARENA01, Agva Records is back with ARENA02, a mega-pack of almost forty tracks focusing on the experimental and hybrid club scene of Latin America.

Released in 2016, the first chapter laid the foundations of the label and unveiled a solid tracklisting composed of close and local members of the collective (Defensa, EL PLVYBXY, CHLO…) and international producers (King Doudou, Bigote).

For this second edition, the label did not go easy and gathered a real festival line-up. ARENA02 features projects from all over the continent and beyond, from emerging artists to real headliners: Dengue Dengue Dengue, Lao (NAAFI, Mexico), Bungalovv (TRRUENO, Argentina), Endgame (Precious Metal, UK), Catnapp, Doxxed, Pobvio, or even the Mexican producer who signed the revival of pre-Hispanic tribal, Ozomatecuhtli. AGVA is a Net Label, Music Collective, Radio Show and Night Club based in Buenos Aires. Within the spawn of six years we met so many wonderful people and grew as independent artists and collective in an unprecedented way, this compilation being the visible tip of an iceberg of goals we never dream they would be realizable. Each of the different spaces depicted by the tracks, be-it calm or wavy, shares a common touristic spot, called the “Valley of Lively Waters”. On the B-side, 6 remixes deepen the sonic palette of the dreamy landscapes showcased on the other side. Alon.e dwelves into trancy synths and an IDM/trip-hopish groove for his version of Super Yellow Juice. Le Frit reconstructs Nunca Esperei por Ti. into a low-key, delicate and psychedelic dembow track. H2O gives a new life to Bamboo Flute with a playful version halfways between dub and synthwave. Guillerrrmo, straight from Manaus, member of São Paulo’s Mamba Negra, distorts the same track into a slow and powerful breakbeat heater. Manchester’s Obeka delivers a mesmerizing dancehall remix of Bury me, with Love, inspired by the track’s heady synths. Last but not least, Ditti re-harmonizes Escadarias into a colorful and quirky reinterpretation.

Dengue Dengue Dengue’s latest release is named after the traditional dance called Son de los Diablos (Spanish for Sound of the Devils), which was brought over to Felipe Salmon and Rafael Pereira’s native Peru by the Spanish conquistadors, and consisted on a procession of dancers and musicians that took to the streets wearing devil masks. By enlisting Lima’s sizeable African slave population, this tradition incorporated the rhythms and dance styles that would eventually become known as Afroperuvian, one of the main elements of modern Peruvian music and culture and one that increasingly informs the music of Dengue Dengue Dengue, as was recently portrayed on RBMA’s ‘Afro-Peruvian Beats’ documentary.

This inspiration is especially noticeable on the title track Son De Los Diablos, which incorporates traditional instruments such as the cajita, but also on Buscando, where the duo recorded with members of the Ballumbrosio family, the prominent lineage of musicians and dancers widely regarded as the the premiere ambassadors of Afroperuvian music, dance and culture. As the band explains, this song was “a big step forward”, as it was the first time the duo recorded every rhythmic element with live musicians, giving the track “the flow and cadence only live musicians can achieve”, as well as a vocal sample of one of Peru’s biggest stars Lucha Reyes. The EP continues with Flootz and Cobre, where the pair further explore the unique blend of entrancing South American and African rhythms and melodies that has become their signature sound.

DJ, label owner Pete On the Corner has created a home for innovative, border-crossing, genre-pushing artists. The OtC vision is to bring music to the world that is knocking at the ‘Door To The Cosmos’. The label is an inimitable mixture of Miles Davis ‘call it what you want’ attitude, Sun Ra’s Afro Futurism and the ecstatic soul lifting influence of black music on electronic dance music.
On ‘Door To The Cosmos – Dancefloor Sampler’ Pete has curated a volume of cuts from present and future label family. This first in the series, is not just knocking at the door but giving it a kick! It’s club music referencing the source, be it Detroit, or UK bass culture combined with future sounds rising from cosmopolitan hotbeds of sonic heat. On this maxi EP Venezuela meets India via New York, the street sound of Dar Es Salaam, Tanzania pulses through UK Jungle. Undergrounds pushing the dance, breaking borders and genre alike. Rhythms from the ancestors channelled for future times.
