SONG02 A2: Benoit & Sergio - What I've Lost

The second release on Thesongsays seems to find what we might call "romantic techno" in a happier place. Sort of. While Bruno Pronsato's 'The Make Up The Break Up' focused on the darker side of romance, Benoit &amp;amp; Sergio's 'What I've Lost' raises a similar question: can we ever be really satisfied?

Benoit &amp;amp; Sergio chose 'Full Grown Man,' as the opener. The bravado of the initial vocals--'I need a lady to understand I'm a full grown man'--references the masculine posturing of, say, Led Zeppelin's "Whole Lotta Love," but also calls attention to the vulnerability and neediness of this masculinity. And when we are seduced into drinking a little wine at the track's midpoint, we realize that this seduction is a mere maneuver to avoid a deeper loneliness. If, lyrically, 'Full Grown Man' points to certain emotional complexities, so, too, does the music: somber synth lines overlay short, brassy stabs, as the intricate sequencing shifts its moods like so many teenage boys.

SONG02: Benoit & Sergio - What I've Lost

What can I say about this set? If you weren't there to hear this man open this night you are in for a treat. It took me years to realize how much of an impression this set made on me and many others. Dont get me wrong, Steve Loria and Doc Martin had great sets this night also but, This set right here set it off for me and me made me realize that this was exactly the place I was meant to be. The Loft on Bay St. at "Unlock The House". This recording is 100% live with microphone and everything. You can hear people talking screaming and shouting having the time of their lives. I wanted to thank the whole unlock the house crew for all of their time and effort that they put in to throwing such amazing undergrounds for L.A. This recording is for all of you that were there and to all of you I have met through the years. There is so much more music that we have to share with all of you and I look forward to recording it all over again.

Xavier De Enciso was born and raised in South Central Los Angeles, an area of L.A. that gave rise to the west coast electro sound with artists like Egyptian Lover and Arabian Prince. It was during this time in the mid-1980s that Xavier realized that his community was a creative force populated with DJs playing funk, new wave, and eventually Detroit techno. At the age of fifteen, Xavier immersed himself in his neighborhoods’ DJ culture. But it was his initial contact to the abstract sounds of techno that dramatically altered the course of his life and gave way to a new direction. He immediately shifted his musical interest and and in 1990, he received his first experience at promoting techno events in the “back yard party” scene of South, West, and East Los Angeles. 

By 1992, he was immersed in L.A.’s infamous underground warehouse parties where he became a frequent party-goer at legendary undergrounds such as Double Hit Mickey. Driven by a new vision, he set his goal to play at the undergrounds alongside L.A.’s established DJ roster that included names such as Ron D Core, Doc Martin, Barry Weaver, R.A.W. and Steve Loria. Xavier became part of the second wave of DJs that emerged in L.A.'s famed underground circuit. Crossing cultural and physical boundaries, his sets have been witnessed in warehouses, alleys, empty parking lots, deserts, forests, abandoned buildings, sports arenas, and major clubs. His skills earned him top billing alongside the industry’s most respected artists such as Joey Beltram, Kevin Saunderson, Frankie Bones, Doc Martin, Laurent Garnier, John Aquaviva, The Advent, DJ Hyperactive, Mike Dearborn, Josh Wink, Westbam, LTJ Bukem, David Alvarado, Juan Atkins, Mikael Stavostrand, Drumcell, John Tejada, DJ Dex, Santiago Salazar, Esteban Adame, Kris Wadsworth, Claude Young, Silent Servant, and Peter Van Hoesen, just to name a few.

Known for his programming and seamless mixing skills often blurring the lines between techno and house, he’s taken his sound around the U.S and abroad. As a promoter, he's produced some of L.A.'s most memorable raves such as “Ravecycle” (1992), “Opium” (1994- 1998), “Weeble World,” (1996,1997); hosting established artists such as LTJ Bukem, Vapour Space, and Gus Gus. He's also produced underground house events under "Citrusoul" from 1998-2000. 

In 2004, he redirected his focus to academic studies and earned his BA/MA in Chicana/o Studies from Cal State University Northridge. He continued his academic track and has since contributed to L.A.’s underground scene by writing his Masters thesis in 2009 on Los Angeles’ rave DJ culture of the 1990s from a Chicano perspective. He is currently an adjunct professor at East Los Angeles College.

In 2009 he returned from academic hiatus and formed LOVEFIX, a collective that aims at providing a space for techno and house music where community and the underground sound prevail. With a passion for academia and underground nightlife, he's been invited to speak at conferences bringing forth L.A.’s unique underground dance culture.  

He made his debut on MODELHART records via Norway as their 5th vinyl release in 2014 and made the rotations at the mighty Berghain. In addition, he's collaborating with other L.A. techno artists and is set to release music late 2018 under the Artifacts of Struggle Imprint.
