I Chewingum sono in tre, con nomi bizzarri come Ragazzo Italiano, Carta e Mr. Non, hanno uno studio personale a Senigallia che si chiama Uruguay Supersound e il loro unico scopo prima di registrare il secondo album era quello di “ricercare una specie di iPod frullato sonoro che miscela pop, hip hop, funky, reggae, wave, samba e punk; il suono dell’Uruguay”, un punto di partenza intelligente per giocare con la musica, senza barriere e distinzioni, ma mantenendo sempre e comunque un filo conduttore personale. E poi, ce lo ricordano anche loro, l’importante sono le canzoni, al di là di tutte le definizioni che è possibile appiccicare – come una gomma da masticare, appunto – al suono che contraddistingue le undici tracce che compongono Nilo. La loro abilità nell’inventare melodie pop, mischiate con moltissimo altro, era già emersa dopo la pubblicazione dell’esordio, La seconda cosa da andare (Tafuzzy Records &amp; Marinaio Gaio, 2008), e con l’EP in download Il disco si posò (2010), oltre che con la lunga serie di date che li ha visti impegnati in Italia e all’estero. E che li vedrà ripartire dopo il 29 febbraio, data di pubblicazione di Nilo per Garrincha Dischi. Nel corso della gestazione del disco, i Chewingum hanno incontrato anche musicisti e anime affini che hanno contribuito in maniera importante al risultato finale: Maria Antonietta ha cantato in Oregon ghiacciai, Latootal (fondatore degli storici Uomini di Mare assieme al concittadino Fabri Fibra) ha mostrato la sua abilità in fase di sampling su Il neorealismo del lunedì, Marco (Dadamatto) si è inventato soulman per Atlantic City. Matteo Sideri e Paolo Berluti, infine, hanno suonato batteria e organo Hammond qua e là, per impreziosire una visione d’insieme che – per fortuna – è davvero difficile inquadrare in maniera compiuta. Nilo è piuttosto spiazzante anche dopo ripetuti ascolti, passa agevolmente da ricordi sbiaditi di post punk inglese alla Young Marble Giants (L’alba di Roma est) al reggae stralunato e inquietante di Svastiche, dall’incredibile I-Love, impossibile mix tra Pasolini – il suo Comizi d’amore è saccheggiato a dovere – ed elettronica povera – uno degli apici dell’intero lavoro – alle suggestioni brasileire di Sambamara. E poi c’è l’elettropop di Los Banditos, con un testo scippato direttamente dalle pagine de Il Sole 24Ore che scivola via su una base che sa di Gorillaz. Sono proprio la musica e le liriche a permettere ai Chewingum di fare rotta verso destinazioni esotiche senza muoversi da Senigallia, tra viaggi reali e immaginati alla ricerca di se stessi, ma sempre con il sorriso in volto e una speranza per il futuro. Parole e musica sono racchiuse in una confezione importante tanto quanto il suo contenuto, opera del pittore Giacomo Giovannetti: un collage il cui fulcro sta ne “L’uomo operato” in copertina e da cui nasce questo viaggio fantasmagorico lungo il fiume più lungo del mondo, oltre 6.500 km per arrivare sino al Mar Mediterraneo. Pop, hip hop, funky, reggae, wave, samba e punk del Delta. È più semplice di quanto si creda…

The debut single from Temples is released by Heavenly Recordings on Monday 12th November 2012.

Both tracks were recorded in early September and produced by Temples in Pyramid Studios, their home studio in Kettering.

Temples have been confirmed as main support on the forthcoming Mystery Jets tour alongside London shows with Charlie Boyer & The Voyeurs and Tribes. They will also be playing the London Calling festival in Amsterdam.

About: 
The beginning of Lapland started before it even had a name. It was born in a tiny half-bedroom in Brooklyn, where songwriter Josh Mease began recording a new batch of songs in early 2011. Mease has always found comfort in the solitude of his own thoughts, often preferring the landscapes within his mind’s eye over the bustle of the city that surrounds him. So it seems fitting that in making Lapland’s self-titled debut, he worked alone using whatever was within reach – only rarely using other musicians.

Perhaps this self-imposed isolation is why Lapland has such an introspective tone. Themes of separation and loss are woven throughout the album, as Lapland moves fluently through different styles and genres while maintaining a uniquely personal sound.  From the percolating electronic gallop of the opening track, “Unwise”, to the blue-eyed soul of “Aeroplane”, to the acoustic haze and layered harmonies of “Overboard”, Mease always keeps things interesting.  One can hear the effect of the myriad of music styles and genres that informed Lapland – Early synth pioneers of the 60′s and 70′s, French Impressionists like Ravel and Debussy, and 1970′s staples like Fleetwood Mac.

Mixing styles is not new for Mease. He grew up in Texas where his childhood love of rock and country evolved into studying jazz guitar. After moving to New York, he eventually shifted his focus from playing jazz to singing and writing songs. This transformation gives Mease a unique approach to songwriting, and his work has earned him fans not only in indie circles but also in jazz, R&B, and classical music as well.

The name Lapland only presented itself after the album was completed, when Mease picked up a book from the $2 stacks at a used bookstore called “Lappland Wanderland.” The book contained photos of other-worldly landscapes and vast open spaces which seemed to connect with Mease’s new recording. It was not a difficult decision to adopt the name Lapland for this new phase of Mease’s career. The scope of his work deserves a moniker of symbolic significance. And so, Lapland began.
