In June 2008, while cataloguing my late father Bruno Santini's archives for 
the "Danze Macabre" documentary, I discovered a cassette tape in a manila 
envelope marked simply "E.M. - Dicembre '79 - NON PUBBLICARE" (DO NOT RELEASE).

Inside was a note in my father's handwriting:

    "Elena sent this from somewhere in Umbria. No return address. 
     Just this tape and a card that said 'For your ears only, Bruno. 
     Grazie per tutto.' I have listened to it perhaps a hundred times. 
     I will never release it. She trusted me with this goodbye.
     - B.S., January 1980"

My father kept his word until his death in 1995. I have struggled with whether 
to honor his wishes or share this extraordinary piece of music with the world.

After much consideration and consultation with Tommaso Ferri and Lucia 
Dellucci, I have decided to release "The Broken Doll" for the following reasons:

1. Twenty-eight years have passed since Elena's disappearance
2. The documentary has renewed interest in her work and story
3. This recording demonstrates her artistic evolution in isolation
4. Most importantly: Elena sent this to my father, knowing he was a producer. 
   Perhaps she knew, someday, it might be heard.

"The Broken Doll" was recorded in December 1979, approximately three years 
after Elena left Le Ombre Rosse and one year after her last confirmed public 
appearance.

The recording quality suggests a single microphone in a small room - possibly 
a monastery cell or rural cottage. There is no artificial reverb, no production, 
no overdubs. This is Elena, alone, with her voice and violin, captured in a 
single take.

Technical analysis indicates:
- Cassette tape, Type II (chrome)
- Single Shure SM57 or similar dynamic microphone
- Room dimensions: approximately 3x4 meters
- Natural reverb suggests stone walls
- Recording time: late night (no external sounds except distant church bells 
  at 3:47)

The performance is flawless yet emotionally raw. Elena's technical mastery is 
evident - her intonation, her bow control, her vocal technique. But there is 
also an intimacy and vulnerability never present in Le Ombre Rosse recordings.

This is not a performance. This is a confession.

This release is not an attempt to find you. It is not exploitation. It is 
gratitude.

Thank you for everything you gave the world before choosing to step away from 
it.

Wherever you are, I hope you have found the peace you were seeking.

And if you're angry that I released this... I understand. Some legacies are 
heavier than others.
