Disquiet Junto Project 0572: Rhythm Kit
The Assignment: Make a beat that someone else will add to.

On ebay I shot an old, rancid, scuffed Casio PT-1 as a restoration object for the holidays. It came yesterday and at the same time the disquiet junto mail came in. And it worked. Ah, I liked these rhumba rhythms like I did 40 years ago. Originally I just wanted to contribute that. But then I recorded a 4 bar loop and used 4 tracks on reaper to play around with some fx. I exported it and gave it some structure in Reaper.  It's now only the original loop plus fx. I think there is plenty of room for a second voice. 

The pure PT-1 is hearable in the beginning. I also put the original loop to https://freesound.org/people/krakenkraft/sounds/665090/ 

It's plain vanilla 120bpms.

I always look forward to the beginning of the year when this project comes around.  This year I used this piece as a study for a much larger work - specifically using it as a way to experiment with a complex scripting language I have built on top of the RTcmix (www.rtcmix.org) scripting language, MinC.
My scripts allow me to create algorithmic musical patterns in a large number of dimensions:  volume, pitch, sample selection, tempo, placement in a simulated room-space etc.  Each dimension can be moved about in via an algorithmic plug-in, for example, random choice, sequential access, fixed value, etc.
The Psychedelic Ice Machine uses three sets of ice sound samples I have recorded over the years.  The score loops, creating an ever-changing set of patterns.  The relationship between these is sometimes clear and sometimes obscured.

This week's assignment left me somewhat conflicted. 

I wanted to leave enough room for Disquiet Junto members to take parts of the track and add their ideas. On the other hand, it should sound like a track and not like an assembly of 4-bar loops. I hope I left enough space for you to add. If not, there's always the possibility to EQ the s*** out of it. 

Second, 60 BPM feels like 120 BPM when you add 16th hi-hats to it... but I couldn't resist doing it.
