He wasn’t blood, but Howell was the closest thing to a grandpa that I had. When I was young, we spent a lot of time together out on the golf course…it was there that he helped me to become a patient person and to do my best. He also taught me its OK for a father figure to tell his son / grandson, “I love you.”

Howell Parker died on November 2nd, 2013 on Dia de Los Muertos. His funeral service was November 13th, 2013 at Fort Sam Houston National Cemetery. His funeral was difficult…each fold of the American flag unbearable…the sound of taps heart breaking. I regret not visiting him before he passed.

After the funeral, we went to visit my grandmother, Grama Sally. She had been sick for a while, fighting cancer. She was asleep, in bed, and had been for a few days. I found out she was still smoking even just a few days before the visit. Stubborn til the end.

I held her hand and I knew she was in pain…that night she died. She waited long enough for her husband to pass and then she joined him. They must have had a night of bowling and two-stepping planned out there somewhere.

Today, December 2nd, 2013, was Grama Sally’s funeral service…also held at Fort Sam Houston National Cemetery.

Both my grandparents and my great grandmother who passed earlier this year, all chose to be cremated. That’s why I had been thinking about the process lately. Sound by fire.

In the 5th grade I received one of the best presents ever…an electric guitar. It was with this instrument that I learned how to make music. There’s a lot of sentimental value with that guitar…that’s what made it really difficult for me as I plugged it in and placed it on the fire.

I recorded the electrical signal the guitar made as I cremated it. I recorded the ambient sounds of the fire and my backyard as well and then took all of it into Ableton for some final touches.

The song is 11 minutes and 13 seconds. 11/13 for the day both my grandparents left earth.

Lancashire's sons of occult darkness push off into the night with the first in a triptych of spellbinding vinyl-only LP's. 'Forest Of Evil' is a direct elevation and expansion of the ideas expressed on the debut album, 'Symbiosis', literally breaking down multiple elements to run as two extended pices - one on each side, giving more scope to suck us into an abyssal vortex of inky blackness without interruption. The sides are themed as 'Dusk' and 'Dawn', entry and exit points for a trip where owt can happen in between. On the palindromic 'Dusk' tentative strings with one eye on Alice Coltrane imbue an astral sense of wonderment before plunging us head first into the cold water of elliptical percussion. With lungs and ears flooded we're churned in a current of Shackleton-esque percussion at the bottom of a tarn, high in the hills before returning to the coruscating strings on the surface. With 'Dawn' a battery of warlocks forge a martial tattoo, like Regis sent to the dark ages to live out his fantasies with a medieval drum circle. And then, out of nowhere, an ominous veil of layered strings emerges out of nothing to sweep us away with vintage elements and ghostly traces of sound last heard on the sublime last album from the Caretaker as quivering subbass tremors threaten to open the ground beneath the turntable. Approach this when under the influence of magic potions for maximum rewards...

Material originally penned for a recent tour of Japan with fellow LA artist Matthewdavid, 'Sunsets and Clocks' is a brand new EP from Anenon.
 
Consider how personal an experience it is to wait. When caught in the space of time before a thing happens, we unconsciously reveal ourselves through our ticks - physical manifestations of where we let our thoughts drift in this non-space. While waiting, each foot tapped, itch scratched and phone checked reflects the places we allow ourselves to explore before we have to jump back into formal time and space to perform.
 
Anenon recorded 'Sunsets and Clocks' in the weeks directly preceding a whirlwind tour of Japan, where expectations and preconceptions (both false and true), collided over and over again in anticipation of the trip to come. In this collection of songs, Brian Allen Simon shares that intimate space, where he was both highly conscious of the relentless march of time and simultaneously removing himself from it, delving into an inner space where the lack of time smeared memories, fantasies, and fears into one another.
 
From the title, we can start to understand his headspace during this period, where the abstract concerns and artistic preparations for an international tour to a new country constantly collided with the pragmatic, binary problems of itineraries, exchange rates, and language barriers. These conflicting drives mirror the sharp contrast of the way the smudged shades of a fading sun mark the end of the day at the same time that the precision crafted gears of a timepiece click into place. 
 
We hear this theme reflected in how these pieces are unified by their maximal approaches to contrasts in the perception of time and meter, voice and tone. Anenon plays with this contrast through the shadowy textures of rhythm in the live improvisation of "We Yearn" and the meticulously interlocking beats driving "Ghost Light" and the title track. Boldly eschewing the use of the Rhodes and piano of his previous releases, these songs instead rely on the tenor sax and synthesizer. This new pairing fully realizes the theme in the marriage of the ethereal vibrations of the lungs and haunting accuracy of the keys.
