M. Geddes Gengras has inhabited the Los Angeles experimental music scene for the last 7 years, bouncing through various bands, monikers, and a critically acclaimed collaboration with Sun Araw and The Congos. The producer perhaps shines most brightly, however, when left to his own bespoke devices. His solo work is largely based in modular synthesis, comfortably straddling a variety of forms while remaining rooted in a deep affinity for the limitations of analog electronics and a keen ear for timbral manipulation.


Ishi finds the producer diving headlong into beautiful, sprawling ambient explorations and deep, mystical drone. Its title is the name given to “the last wild Indian” in North America, who emerged in 1911 at the age of 49. Hidden all his life in the wilderness of northern California, Ishi spent most of his life completely unexposed to the modern world lurking just beyond his own timeless reality. His only exposure to the “civilized” world came from Gold Rush settlers, whom he watched massacre and disease each and every member of his family and tribe, until he alone remained. When he was found, communication between the miraculous survivor and this strange new world was understandably difficult and frightening— but the knowledge gained through the process proved invaluable.


Sometimes the most effective and direct means of communication and understanding exist outside of human language. Gengras’ highly expressive instrumental record reveals itself via sweeping tonal gestures and striking, intensely colorful washes of heavily processed electronic sound. “Ambient” is insufficient to describe the uniquely evocative soundtrack presented here, a lushly nuanced sound world generated directly from the deeply personal relationship between one man and his meticulously cultivated machines.


“The record is about the schism that exists between the world we live in and those stuck on the margins of it— perpetual outsiders and their quest to understand the torrent of information they are constantly subjected to. I was directly inspired to these pieces by two people in my orbit who died this year, one accidentally and one not, both of whom suffered this affliction and eventually lost their lives to it. The music was a reaction to these losses and a sort of offering of something peaceful but at the same time respectful of the conflict and dissonance of life, with movement always in the distance. I look at it as music for passage between different realms, conscious & un, this world & another, layers of reality... ISHI is a metaphor for that— the man who walks into our world understanding none of it but forced to live in it regardless. Heinali is the alias of self-taught composer and sound-designer Oleg Shpudeiko from Ukraine. Now well established under the name he brings along his latest full length ‘Iridescent’ due for release on October 12th on Injazero Records. 

Having garnered rapturous responses to his earlier output and last year’s ‘Anthem’ Oleg continues to push the boundaries and experiment with altering mood and atmospheres of any space - with abstract yet deeply personal transmissions of ambient synthesiser work and subaqueous, minimal techno contortions. 

‘Iridescent’ consists of fragments of studio improvisation sessions recorded in 2016 and 2017, some of them recorded in one unedited take on a modular system and some layered and later morphed into compositions. As the title suggests Heinali crafts shimmering, incandescent portraits, rich in his unique characteristics and compositional liberty. 

Apart from the “musical sculptures,” that represent the bulk of this LP, Oleg was interested in the exploration of polyphonic capabilities of the modular system. ‘Rainbow Folding’, a loose homage to Terry Riley’s 'A Rainbow In Curved Air,' features an interplay of several independent, but distinct voices and their processed shadows — ‘ghost voices’. In 'Shadow Invention’ eerie atmospherics steal the spotlight and dominate the composition, ending in a cacophony of the ‘ghost voices’. 

Oleg says of the album, “it’s a kind of studio dairy. A reflection on the development of my relations with the hardware instruments and exploration of them as channelling vessels for my experiences and ideas.” 

“One can think of Iridescent’ as ‘musical sculpture’ analogy — when the body of music stays the same, but its surface is flickering with various colours over time — sometimes in a subtle manner, sometimes loud and clear. Or it can be understood in the context of various colours of polyphony, or as a liminal condition of the colour as if it’s being ‘stuck’ in the mist of twilight zone between neighbouring colour-states, so it can’t become a particular colour and is in a flickering kaleidoscopic state.” 

‘Iridescent’ bares Oleg’s style of sonic storytelling and austere, otherworldly textural embellishments that bring to mind Ben Frost, Akira Yamaoka, and Oneohtrix Point Never but also plants the seed for much more club ready electro. ‘Starling Reprise I’ is a scorching piece of ambient techno that conjures Four Tet, LTO and Susumu Yokota’s blissful, kaleidoscopic synth work whilst ‘Starling Reprise II’ retains the frosty, steely ambience that has become Heinali’s calling card.

A trio of guitar, bass and drums, Elektro Guzzi overcome the boundary between analogue versus digital, performing techno live with the drive of a machine and the sonic detail of an instrument – without any computers or loopers.

For their upcoming album Polybrass, Elektro Guzzi have drastically expanded their sonic repertoire: both in the studio and on stage, they are joined by an ensemble of three trombonists, opening up a whole new realm of possibilities. With Hilary Jeffrey, Daniel Riegler and Martin Ptak, the band are joined by three brass heavyweights, each of them well renowned for both their solo ventures as well as projects such as The Kilimanjaro Darkjazz Ensemble, Sand and Zeitkratzer.

By treating the three trombones not simply as a set of extra instruments but rather as one coherent body of sound on its own, Elektro Guzzi dissociate the brass instruments from their conventional use and repurpose them into something completely different: a modular synthesizer, with each trombone representing one oscillator.

In doing so, Elektro Guzzi add new layers of depth to their music, emphasizing a more cinematic side of their music: like the soundtrack for a movie, Polybrass is bigger, darker, more dramatic, more intimate. Warm and fuzzy textures float weightlessly above fragile soundscapes and complex sonic fragments. At the same time, the band’s signature sound runs distinctly through the entire album: solid percussive grooves, stripped down to the absolute minimum it takes to make your body move. Hypnotic repetition, building tension and suspense up to a point where the energy of the music gets so intense you feel like you can physically touch it with your hands, interlaced with organic patterns of sound, constantly changing and evolving, pulsating and oscillating.

Polybrass will be released on Denovali Records on October 26th, 2018.

'Fear Of Floating' is the second single from Australian-born, Liverpool-based composer, saxophonist and founder of Immix Ensemble, Daniel Thorne. The track, taken from Daniel's solo debut 'Lines of Sight', is a grand, transposing soundscape that places Daniel’s saxophone front-and-centre, allowing the abstract beauty of his meandering and contorting melody to breathe, amongst the chaotic backdrop of spiralling undulating effects. 'Fear Of Floating' perfectly encapsulates the atmosphere of the record; equal parts magnificent, unnerving, mind-bending and deeply satisfying.     
 
"Although the album wasn't written to follow a specific narrative, I felt it should have the feeling of a journey, leaving a place of chaos and noise and arriving somewhere both serene and unfamiliar. As the final track on the album, I wanted 'Fear of Floating' to be to be the opposite of the album’s beginning ('From Inside, Looking Out') by being much sparser, eschewing large dense textures and instead focusing on a single melodic 'voice' that gets bashed about by its surroundings, before finally washing up somewhere peaceful and alone." — Daniel Thorne

Every strand is fresh, vital and purposeful. The description ‘seamless’ might suggest a smooth, bland fusion, but here elements overlap in intermittent, undulating layers of mesh.
