TEN: The Archive Series, Pt. 6

Gautama (Abstraal Remix)

DJIHO is inspired by Mozambique’s red sand - “djiho” in Changana - a symbol of memory, rhythm, and ancestral spirit. Blending deep Afrotech and Afrohouse rhythms, the track carries the energy of dancing barefoot in sacred earth, surrounded by the heartbeat of drums and voices of those who came before.

Although Gabriel Berlanga has done the rounds, with records & mixes out on labels such as Correspondant, Nein and Melomana, undoubtedly here his Aeromuerto EP on Beachcoma brought this to us. A wonderful homage to analogue synths and the 16 step sequenced journeys they created brought aching joy to this R$N fella. Familiar at Razzmatazz, The Loft and Moog, Barcelona loves Undo.

With his own Factor City Records label (which has featured Club Bizarre, Offset and Morgan Hammer) to look after too, we asked the salt & pepper haired Catalonian to do a mix for us. And give us a little about his favourite food and stuff.

Releasing my debut album has been one of my most meaningful life-experiences, and apart from the times playing my livesets, I seem to never have found a right moment to share it personally with the world. Today it has been exactly one year since the release-date, so this should be a good moment.

"Kindred Phenomena marks Mattheis' debut album. After two cosmic EPs on Nous'klaer and a mini-album on tape for Ecstatic Recordings, he now returns to Nous'klaer for his first full story. An album shaped for every occasion: driving from the city to the island, dancing in the living room, or raving at sunset. On Kindred Phenomena Mattheis picks up where he left off: 'Swell' serves as another episode of the prisms, the modular synth excursion of 'Bit Fragments' pushes his arpeggiator solos a step further, and album standout 'Ben_M' provides his most beautiful dance of melodies yet. KRKN012 - Ashburner - Badness

Thomas Neyens first left his mark on the dance scene under his alias Kiani & His Legion, with two releases on Red D's We Play House Recordings in 2013 and more recently on Something Happening Somewhere, quickly demonstrating his accomplished production flair. This led the Belgian establishing his own imprint, Tanzbar Records, where he dropped two EPs under his Far Out Radio Systems moniker – bringing a more 'dancefloor focused' sound. Now after a two year hiatus, Neyens returns to his Far Out Systems alias for this EP, his first offering for a label outside of Tanzbar Records. 

'Spheres' kicks off the release, with its soft bassline perfectly complimenting the hazy synths, syncopated drums and the mesmerising nuances from the hang drum that feature later in the track. The slow burning style continues on 'Jane Goodall', with the track's atmospheric textures gradually overpowered by a steady selection of drums, percussion and off-kilter effects. 'Vaquita' sees Far Out Radio Systems up the tempo whilst still sonically retaining the melancholic, hypnotic sound of the EP, as the snare-led rhythm gradually gains in momentum over its seven minute duration. Closing this excellent four track EP is 'On A Quest', a pulsating number that combines soaring, ethereal synths with a club ready groove that is perfect for the shadowy dancefloors the Belgian DJ/producer performs to.
