Phonica Mix Series 84: Young Marco

A big part of why we do what we do at Delayed is to create a platform for like-minded artists as well as connect in a worldwide community with music lovers who also appreciate a more soothing sound. It’s a best case that we are now able to feature Hame, an artist that comes straight from this community. He appeared in 2022 with his first release, “Compathy” on Lola Haro’s new born label Small Steps - and immediately touched listeners, bookers and us. Unsurprisingly he got booked for a live set at DOEL Festival and we strongly believe that all of you shall get to know the Amsterdam-based artist and get an impression of his approach, journey and of course, his music.

When I first discovered Donato Dozzy’s early records around 2006, I was immediately captured by the warm and hypnotic feel of his music. From that moment on, I’ve been a big fan of Dozzy’s work, over the years, collecting more and more of his music - from the solo projects and remixes to his well-known collaborations with other great artists. At some point the idea occurred to me: why not paying homage to this great artist in form of a tribute mix? It took me quite a while to bring the idea into reality, but now here it is. During the process of selecting the tracks for the mix, I got the feeling I wanted to create something more geared toward home listening or a walk around the city with headphones. For this reason, I slowed things down a bit and kept the whole mix under 120 bpm.

When making our song "You Don't Have To Be Alone" we sampled the voice of Charlie Wilson from a record he did in 2005. What by every law of music industry bureaucracy should have ended up as a sample clearing nightmare, somehow then turned into a dream collaboration for us. We owe that to the man himself who heard the song and thought we could expand on it together. We got together in the studio in Los Angeles, wrote and recorded new vocals, and created a new version of the song. You can hear it now. Thank you Charlie. - Samo and Jerome
