Debuting with the ethereal “Time Hurtz” on Modeselektor's “Modeselektion Vol. 3” compilation, Berlin artist Born In Flamez began by giving us everything and nothing – a deeply personal work nonetheless divorced from context or identity. Not that BIF ever defaulted to anonymity… the person behind the music was always front-and-center, yet inscrutable. The song’s equally diaphanous and commanding vocal work, its lyrical soliloquizing of hesitance and stasis, its gripping emotional qualia – these would demand in the listener an intimacy that is usually exclusive to pop fandom, while providing no hand-holding narrative outside of the music itself. This novel approach would continue throughout the UnReaL EP debut, the IM-released collab with Modeselektor, “TBF”, and culminate in Infinite Machine’s 53rd main series release, their first of 2017, and BIF’s sophomore EP – “Careful You Might Tear The Sound”.

And despite the proclamation of frailty, BIF’s newest music is nothing but. Wistful, yes. Wounded, yes. But there is strength, catharsis and transcendence encoded within. These sounds are tear-proof. The loopy, mechanistic dembow of the title track gallops onward with tenacity amid sombre angelic incantations and off-beat numbers station interjections. The demure 7/8 gait of “50 Down”, and its nursery-rhyme-inflected calliope/Triton melodies hide deeply mournful social commentary on (and the eulogizing of) the Orlando Pulse massacre. BIF’s titular instruction might be reflexive – indeed, when the vitreous, FX-destroyed vocal motifs chime in, there is a sense that the track is ripping itself apart. And it is wonderfully poignant.

UNITI is the London DJ collective pushing inclusivity and safe spaces within the club music community. They’re set to release their debut compilation album, ‘Reclaiming The Void’ later this month, with original music from Bonaventure, Born In Flamez, DEBIT, Ganx, Englesia, Estoc, Terribilis and more. Today we’re premiering the first track off the album, titled ‘One Eye Blind’. It’s a tight Born in Flamez production, all breathy, soul-baring vocals and jarring, industrial noise. Capping off a run of releases in the final months of 2017, Sweat Equity closes out its offering of records for our year with Love Thyself, the debut EP from New York producer Dion McKenzie, aka Tygapaw.

As the founder and resident of New York’s venerable QTPOC collective and party Fake Accent, McKenzie has been a figurehead of New York’s nightlife, and is now turning her attention worldwide, with dates in Asia, Europe and the Americas under her belt in the past year. Now, she’s offering another angle on her skills, readying her first outing as a producer and writer.

Showcasing the sheer depth of her abilities as a producer and dancefloor visionary, “Love Thyself” feels like a victory lap of sorts, celebrating her expansive abilities as a sonic curator while marking a continued evolution in her creative voice. Tracks move from baile funk to New York vogue to Baltimore club and back, mixing together McKenzie’s own vision with a well-read sense of track production from any number of classic schools of practice.

Berlin based artist Born in Flamez returns to Infinite Machine with 'Impossible Love', a 7 track EP which questions the restrictions and tactics of queer love in the current political climate. 

The notions of heteronormative monogamous ideals and so called queer "free love" are probed as binary poles in a world of tinder and an increasing trend of non-commitment. The constant pressure of hypercapitalism crescendos in an impotence of actual contact, but capitalism is also built on the ideal of "family values“ - if you love you forget about the world (and your call to change it).

Basing their lyrics on commonplaces of rom-coms and heteronormative ideals of the "one true love“, reading phrases like "I will never let you go“ closer, the phrase reveals a threatening subcontext. In this dilemma it becomes clear how any such dualism raises a myriad of questions and by this opens up a space for something outside its poles in which we navigate our violent love for each other

Tatiana Heuman's debut album 'QEEI' is a multi-layered collection of deconstructed pop songs marked by stuttering percussion, chaotic microsamples, and infectious vocal melodies. 

Heuman describes 'QEEI' as a collection of audible planets within orbit of the same galaxy of emotions. (The album was composed between the gravity that holds Buenos Aires, Puerto Escondido, and Berlin.) 'QEEI' does violence to borders through glassy ultrasound and entrancing hyperrhythms. 

Each song is a different “preacher.” 'QEEI' formulates a pop music mangled and contorted to give voice to ‘contemporary witches.’ 

There is a side of digital brutalism to the music as well as humanistic breathing synthscapes and real human body sounds. Heuman experiments with the plasticity of personality, her “inner territory interacting with its own limits.” The result: “Wars.”
