Ekkohaus steps up for a new four track EP to be released on Cargo Edition, entitled “On The Road”. The Germany based producer has been making his own unique sounds since the 90s, often on labels like Liebe*Detail, 2020Vision and Safari Electronique, and at the same time has a long and fruitful relationship with this label as well as its big brother Moon Harbour. 

This new EP continues in that good tradition and explores four different aspects of groove laden, dancefloor ready tech house. The first is the title track, “On The Road” and is one that grows out of a warm and looping sub bass into some that’s liquid and funky’s the sort of track that makes you shake your ass and no mistake.

“Don’t Come Back” is a littler darker and more firm in its well defined grooves, with filtered eerie vocals dropping in and out of the slinky hi hats and deep diving bassline at various intervals. Off kilter snares add some extra snap and keep you engaged right until the end.

“See Through You” has another charming bassline paired with popping, metallic percussion and some jazzy organ chords for an extra human touch. It’s intricate yet loose, focussed yet widescreen where final effort “Electric Circuit” is more flatted footed and insistent. The kicks here are heavy, with snappy snares and crisp hi hats bringing bright metal surfaces to the forefront as a busy bassline meanders up and down in the background.

These are tool like tracks but still retain plenty of charm meaning Ekkohaus proves himself to be a studied groove scientist that never fails to lock the dancefloor in his solid groove.

When South London Ordnance recently bemoaned his lack of public relations skills on Twitter, we thought it would be the perfect opportunity to introduce him to you. The elusive 23-year-old producer’s Soundcloud had caught our attention with an endearing lack of biographic detail allowing the music to speak for itself.  He’s one of the newest additions to the growing crowd of musicians creating crossover techno with audible influences from a variety of other genres, making his music classifiable as something closer to UK bass tinged with some acid house and dubstep, and of course the occasional diva sample. The small number of tracks on his Soundcloud is a deceiving indicator of South London Ordnance’s prolificacy, as he hinted to having quite a bit on the go, including an EP forthcoming on Audio Culture. His tunes have garnered support from artists like Mosca, who included ‘Crows Nest’ in a mix for Mary Anne Hobbs, Hackman, and Dark Sky. We were excited to sit down to indulge our curiosity by discussing his material and what he has in the works – including a release, a mix, and an exclusive free track to be given away on Truants.

“The ‘layers’ of sinister soundscapes are one of the main strengths of this mix. They not only create a certain texture, but also give this track a completely different dimension. While heavy distorted and resonating basslines pass the listener’s eardrums, the ghost-like samples aim straight for the heart, preparing the listener for a big impact...  

“The first drop leaves creates some serious debris, through both the well-balanced mid- and low-ends. The kick pops nicely while the snare smashes the listener’s eardrums from one side to another. The massive low-end feels warm, but adds a frightening effect to the whole piece – excellent work from FJH! The one growl implemented has this distinctive tone that causes hairs to stand straight up. For the most part repetitive drum patterns controls the mix, with great panning effects added on top to widen the earlier mentioned dimensions.  

“The break shows some great development and the second drop hits even harder than the first. While the samples return in the mix, FJH is already working towards an ending with emotive keys that start to set in. ‘Layers’ sounds like an evolving organism, it’s hard to really define it – a truly powerful tune. The tune’s last breath is a vocal sample that combines with the haunting samples from earlier in the mix. These elements complete a tune that’s definitely for the real deepheads out there, enjoy!”

A mix based on the British Museum
 
Featuring a mix of 12th century Tibetan monks song, one of the first ever recordings of music, made by Thomas Edison on a wax cylinder in 1888, poetic spoken word, 9th century Gregorian Chant, A call to the lama from afar, some unreleased exclusives, 9/8 techno, traditional Chinese music mixed with rude glitch, and a binaural museum.

The brief for this mix was to make something inspired by an architectural space. When I was doing my Post-Doc at UCL I used to go the British Museum to relax, and work in the beautiful library there, so I chose the space for the mix. I wanted to capture the ambient atmosphere in the central courtyard, so I did some binaural recording to include in the mix. I also wanted to make the mix something of an exploration through history and ideas in line with the contents of the museum, so I brought in lots of disparate music spanning the centuries and continents. I also mixed it in a way to be like a journey though the museum, turning corners and regularly coming across something totally different and unexpected, with each track being like a different exhibit. Hence the name of the mix, in that, each piece of music almost has a visual content.
