First made visible via his rework of Patten's Peachy Swan, The Slow Revolt's first single, This Dark Matter / Doldrums was two hymns to a dead affair that struck a chord with XfM, Clash, 6music and Radio1 - as well as earning the support slot for MMOTHS recent tour, Ofei, America's Balmorhea, and Max Cooper and Ghosting Season. 

At first, one man carving out his own rough territory outside today's increasingly formulaic electronica, The Slow Revolt now performs as a two-piece - two expert musicians sparring across live loops, precision triggered beats, guitar, and that voice.

"What is it about my music that's touching other people?" One of the forefathers of techno reflects on his legacy, the state of techno music and the city of Detroit live from IMS.

Most people in nightlife are familiar with the name Juan Atkins. One of the originators of techno, he grew up in Belleville, a middle-class suburb of Detroit, and would become one of the Belleville Three alongside Derrick May and Kevin Saunderson. This first wave of Detroit techno artists was inspired by the late night emissions of radio DJ The Electrifying Mojo—a late-night presenter who famously mixed different synth music, like Krautrock and the German outfit Kraftwerk—and the writing of futurists like Alvin Toffler, who imagined a different, utopic vision of urban life and technology. 

In this keynote interview recorded live at International Music Summit in Ibiza, Atkins reflects on his roots and the musical movement that's grown from his first experiments with techno in the '80s. Returning to his adolescence, he unpacks the origins of his electro collaboration Cybotron, his solo project Model 500 (coming to Houghton this year) and his label, Metroplex, which became a blueprint for a hoard of techno imprints that would emerge in its wake. Now 61, Atkins also reflects on the broader impact music has had on his life—he has given lectures on the intersection of physics, music and spirituality—as well as the remaining stones left unturned as he enters the (very much still active) sunset in his career. "This is me going against what I’m hearing in clubs at the minute. It's all-vinyl and recorded in one take — I haven't edited out any mistakes or anything, so there's a couple of crackles and pops in it, but I wanted to leave them. I’ve just moved house, so I've pulled some of my favourite records out for this mix — there’s hardly any new stuff on here. I didn’t plan any of it apart from the first track, which is from Gemini - and the last track: Throbbing Gristle’s ‘Hot On The Heels of Love’ which is my favourite track ever — for the rest I just winged it."

Joining us for Tapes #131 is self-confessed vinyl addict and Wigan’s finest, Wes Baggaley. For decades, he’s been familiar to promoters, record store staff and clubbers in Manchester and London, but in recent years he has become a familiar face to a much wider audience.

From 2016 to 2024 he played some of the best regarded underground parties across Europe including the legendary Panorama Bar, Frankfurt’s esteemed Robert Johnson, Munich’s Blitz and Rotte Sonne, NYC Downlow, Horse Meat Disco, Chapter 10, Adonis and many more. Written features across several leading dance music titles have appeared and Wes has done live streamed sets for Mixmag's The Lab and an extremely well received one for Boiler Room. When the Covid 19 pandemic struck Wes did a number of live streams including one for Jerome Hill’s brilliant Don’t label and one for Krake festival, both streamed live from Fold, London. He has also appeared on Berlin’s now legendary Hör and currently holds a long running residency at Bottom Heavy with Dan Beaumont at Dalston Superstore.

Young partygoers might know Man Power, AKA Geoff Kirkwood, as the earnest geezer going back-to-back with DJs like Ewan McVicar, Paul Woolford, La La and Skream—peak-time specialists with a fine line in boofy bangers and ravey techno. Kirkwood is also a dab hand at the kind of elliptical house and deep cut detours favored by '00s labels like DFA and Optimo.

In spite of a long track record as a producer and promoter, if you had to boil Kirkwood's work in recent years down to a single quality, it might be altruism. He hails from North Shields, a small town fringing the boundary of Newcastle in England's oft-neglected North East, and wears his heritage proudly. The Me Me Me label boss's involvement in a flurry of civic restoration, and no-filter paeans to the importance of working class involvement in culture, have become as central to his life as music-making itself. For an accomplished DJ who has played at nearly every good club you could name, that’s no small feat.

So which side of Man Power were we in for? The answer on RA.940 is: both. '60s free verse poetry, Zebra Katz, Gesaffelstein and John Carpenter in the opening stretch? Makes sense. Octave One punching through Rozalla? You got it. An extended Joe Claussell workout atop Radiohead's "Everything In Its Right Place"? Why not. In Kirkwood's hands, it all goes down as smooth as a pint of Newcastle Brown.

'The Slow Revolt, has been previously hailed for his flawless contrasting of genres. His newest track “Lean” is another plunge pool into the enchanting sound of beautiful tranquility and lovely layers.

The consistent guitar melody opens the track into a misty landscape of morning dew and seaside freshness, complete with subtle bursts of distorted guitars and a building tension of unpredictable electronica percussion. Mirza’s enchanting vocals bounce beautifully across the layered melodies, building in each bar to a pinnacle of bubbling sounds, changing the scenery from an empty landscape to a busy crossroads of texturised sounds.

Whilst maintaining his soft vocals throughout, the instrumentals in “Lean” carry the textured tension, blending beautifully into a melodic chaos that seems both unnerving and utterly soothing at the same time.'

'London artist The Slow Revolt isn't one to stand still.

Continually moving forward, continually accepting new ideas, the songwriter - real name Joe Mirza - will release new song series 'Sketches' next month.
Ahead of this, Clash is able to premiere new cut 'Stitched Hearts', and it's subtle progression is indicative of the EP as a whole.

The Slow Revolt seems to specialise in hushed songwriting, in work that is sparse yet remarkably intense. 'Stitched Hearts' sits atop of bed of smouldering electronics, Joe Mirza's voice gently nudging against slender guitar lines.

The sustained atmosphere is remarkable, with 'Stitched Hearts' recalling The xx or even Thom Yorke's solo work in its execution.
