Simply incredible composition throughout 

Back in July, Kuboraum collaborated with Terraforma to celebrate the launch of the new Terraforma Journal issue #1 at the evocative location of Berlin's Funkhaus Harbour.

On this occasion, Kuboraum + Terraforma invited legendary Dj Stingray and Dj Red bringing people together again on the dancefloor.

Representative of Kuboraum’s identity and project, Dj Red took over the spaceship at Funkhaus Harbour and brought us on a new mesmerizing sound journey. In her 4-hour set, she turned the dancefloor into a space of creative exchange, connecting the community grooving to the same beat in an ecstatic dance under the sunset light.

The new editorial project by Terraforma represents the desire to create a new, ever-accessible platform in which sound, art, ecology and contemporary culture intersect and interact. Composed by different editorial sections, the first issue explores and broadens the pure notion of festival, not only as a time-space limited entity but as a ‘collective, multilateral, interconnected manifestation of dynamicity’. In this attempt, the journal encapsulates a multiplicity of voices and perspectives that push this concept further with the final goal of providing a platform for creative exchange. The same definition of festival applies mutatis mutandis to what Terraforma Journal stands for, as a space of exchange and encounter within shared cultural, social and political symbols.

The collaboration between Kuboraum and Terraforma finds ultimate expression in the recorded soundscape curated by Dj Red during the event at Funkhaus Harbour in Berlin.

Our 41st podcast comes from techno producer Voiski, who is a close associate of experimental label Silicate Musique, is part of Field Records duo Kartei and is also a regular on LIES and WT Records. His techno sound veers from off kilter and odd to more dance floor focussed, and is never short on intrigue. Characterised by infinitely repetitive loops and acerbic drums, his often analog tracks look to the future for their inspiration and always manage to be cerebral yet hypnotic. 

The mix he has served up for us is mostly made of old personal classics and or new tracks made by friends. “Intimate, glimmery and a bit strong,” says Voiski, the mix is a perfect one for this time of year and has some “heartwarming 90s trance to smile at with some solid techno to dance to.” He’s not wrong there, because this is an absorbing selection that might well surprise you with some of the more fun and sunny inclusions early on, but as things move on that deep, heady, hypnotic Voiski sound soon wins out with smooth coherent transitions that sound just like an extended track by the man himself.

No Way Back: Streaming From Beyond

A 36+ hour take on No Way Back, with 24 hours of the No Way Back room residents and 12+ hours of the Outer Space room immediately following. An excess of the mindmelting wormhole dance experience followed by many hours of floating in space and beyond. When we considered podcasting some sets, we decided to just release them all, one week at a time, in an order different than their original broadcast, with the concept of bringing further ideas with the continuum to light.

For us the toughest moment of the pandemic shut down was the thought that we could not gather on Memorial Day weekend for our annual rite of No Way Back. We need our community now more than ever, to connect and to feel free, in a world of shifting real and unreal realities, sequestered in isolation, how can we get together? Time feels different now, we have more patience for everything, so we applied that space for exploration to the sets at No Way Back, extending them to 3 hours so the DJs can fully explore their ideas.

The Electrifyin' Mojo would say "if you reach the end of your rope, just tie a knot and don’t let go" and this stream and podcasts are our knot. This was the first ever NWB without a defined space, without the transformational art of Amber Gillen and crew, let's hope we can get together in the future safely. Grab a little bit of netting or a parachute, turn on some red lights, move into another dimension. Please stay safe and live to dance another day.

"If, like many others, your introduction to Black Merlin began only from the point of the highly successful Hipnotik Tradisi, your curiosity might have been piqued enough to attempt a little digging of your own, only to be gobsmacked once you realize that you’d been missing out on 90% of a highly productive, almost a decade long career that had preceded the Black Merlin stage name. By the time his jungle-infected LP arrived, Thompson had already carved out several niches for himself in various corners of the electronic music world.

Way back in 2008, Thompson was already making music as one half of Spectral Empire, a duo act with fellow Brit Kyle Martin. Since then, and in between his solo creations as Black Merlin, he has collaborated with partners under no less than two other guises (Kommune, Karamika). His musical catalogue is nothing short of spectacular, having released on such diverse labels as Omnidisc, Bird Scarer Records, Island of The Gods, LN-CC, Common Thread, Pinkman, Berceuse Heroique, SORN, ESP Institute, Boysnoize Records and Jealous God, among others. The recurring theme here appears to be one of constant reinvention, as the genres he has dabbled with oscillates from warped spacey disco, synth-driven krautrock, droney minimal wave, retrogressive EBM, to the hypnotic dark techno of recent years.
From the outside looking in, Thompson’s career trajectory thus far appears to have been less dictated by fickle industry trends and more intrinsically motivated. Running on his own internal clock, he’s been releasing music and reinventing himself at a steady and relentless pace both before and after Hipnotik Tradisi brought his name to the forefront. Few musicians would be tempted to stray from a formula that has tasted success. Not Black Merlin. Following hot on the heels of his 2016 tour de force are already two completely different records by Thompson, all within the span of a year. Clearly, he wasted little time basking in past glory.
Any bid to decode this artist and reduce him to a mere label for one’s own categorizing convenience would be a futile endeavor; it’s akin to a cynic’s vain attempt to deconstruct and unravel one magician’s trick: you’ll likely come out none the wiser and risk missing out on the pure and simple appreciation of his art form. Much better to let each of his music pieces speak for itself."
