My guest for Episode 56 is Claudio PRC who currently holds a residency at the legendary Tresor in Berlin and runs his own record label called 012.twelve. With quality deep techno releases on labels like Prologue, Delsin, Semantica and more he archived a good standing in the scene. You can listen to his guest mix in the second hour.

In the first hour I mixed up some tracks by Decka and Roseen, Flaws, Bleak and more, but starting with some more relaxed vibes first.

Six-time turntablism champ turned sleek tech groove-provider, Japanese DJ and producer DJ HI-C has had many lives before settling as a merchant of stripped-back, zen-like ambiences and mesmeric club rhythms. Elegant and dynamic, his productions sit halfway deeply organic, atmospheric blends and a further steely, hi-velocity strain of techno. Mind-bending by nature, his mixes open a wide window into a pulsating headspace, rife with ebullient bass drive and obsessive loops, constantly pushing the envelope of danceable material as we know it. Tailored to emphasize the impact of a limited number of components rather than drowning his listener under an avalanche of sonic stimuli, HI-C unleashes a storm of painstakingly textured layers and ripping melodic stabs. Bringing together minimalism with soul is an art, and HI-C is an absolute master at that.

Few artists can match the influence that Enrique Mena, AKA Svreca, and his label Semantica have had on contemporary techno. With over 20 years in the DJ booth, 200-plus releases on the label and some acclaimed original productions and remixes, Svreca has spearheaded techno’s second generation, helping maintain Madrid as an international hub for deep and driving sounds. 

As a DJ, Svreca draws from a wide sonic palette that includes noise, dub, avant-garde electronics, electro and, of course, techno. First, it was luminaries like Angel Molina and Oscar Mulero that inspired him; since then he has made it his mission to survey the scene and connect with its most original artists. He funnels these influences into a powerful techno sound for body and mind: immersive, textural and rhythmically complex. Whether in an open-air festival setting or a blistering, pitch-back basement, Svreca’s sets—always delivered with technical precision—are a psychedelic, physical experience. 

His sets are also inextricably linked to Semantica. It’s a two way relationship: the label has become a consistently excellent breeding ground for new talent, as well as home to some of techno’s finest artists. Equally, Svreca draws inspiration from shared moments on a dance floor to fuel the label’s creative direction. From its austere aesthetic (designed by Mena himself) to its boundless exploration of new formats, Semantica encapsulates the heady spirit of experimental techno. 

Across all Svreca's means of expression, one thing is a constant: the music comes first. Less talking, more doing. It’s a formula he has stood by, and delivered the quality of music needed to back it up.

Efdemin has all but perfected his deep, expertly reduced take on house and techno. The German artist has mastered his form over the course of numerous 12”s on various labels, including three albums on Dial Records. They are intricate, mind bending affairs that take you in on yourself and constantly explore new ground. His hybrid mix CD on his own Naïf imprint and Curle last year was another career high point, and recently he has turned himself towards experimental and microtonal composition with yet more fascinating results. February 2019 will see Ostgut Ton release New Atlantis, his latest album and one inspired by Francis Bacon’s unfinished 17th century novel of the same name. Promising to fuse his left-of-centre take on dance music with a new found passion for experimental sound art, it’s the latest chapter in a fascinating artistic story. 

His podcast for us is a decidedly club-focussed mix, featuring the sort of warped synths and underlapping grooves you would expect of the man. There are multi-layered tracks of percussion, sound design and stringy rhythms to start, then things slip into long, draw out passages of tunnel vision techno before the drums begin to hit harder to carry you home. At times playful, at others deadly serious, it sums up the career of Efdemin perfectly.
