We're going a little off piste with something new on SB this week... We welcome returning mad scientist Scruscru with his buddy Mike Fot who came to us with the beginnings of a weird and wonderful new off shoot series called Spliff Jamz. 

Following a series of visits to Moscow between 2018 and 2020 to play at Powerhouse club, Scruscru would swing by Mike Fot’s apartment for a smoke and a jam session, working with a variety of Roland and Korg gear late into the night. The results of these sessions have led to a series of EPs; with the first four tracks ready for your ears right now.

Kiwi duo 2XM make a welcome return to Eton Messy Records this August with their ‘Inperspect’ EP.

2XM is callobrative guise of the respectively New Zealand and Australia based Liam and Ben Murray. The pair have been creating unique blends of dance music since late 2016, exploring a multitude of sonics, stemming from their wide variety of training and interest in jazz, classical, hip-hop and electronic music. Recent times have seen the pair unveil a string of material via the likes of Eton Messy, Sengiley Records and GLBDOM, adding to their already extensive list of releases with Slothboogie, Café del Mar, Dansu Discs, Bolting Bits, Of Leisure and many more.

Here the pair return with a fresh three-tracker, led by title-track ‘Inperspect’ which fuses hazy atmospherics and bumpy off kilter drums with snaking subs, airy vocals and cinematic strings.

‘Sometimes’ follows and embraces skippy garage leaning drums amidst elongated bass drones, ethereal vocal swells and shimmering pads before ‘Allway’ rounds things out on a more deep house tip, shifting the rhythmic aspect to organic 4/4 percussion alongside choppy bass stabs, fluttering keys and a vocal uttering the track’s title.

We are excited to premiere the beautiful and epic "Child - Part IV" by London's incredible Levitation Orchestra, forthcoming on Gearbox Records.

We swooped at the opportunity to premiere one of our favourite cuts from the forthcoming album by  Levitation Orchestra on Gearbox Records. We have been HUGE fans since their debut LP on Astigmatic and their phenomenal live show at London's Church of Sound.

Founded in 2018 by trumpet player & musical director Axel Kaner-Lidstrom, Levitation Orchestra was formed with the shared goal to create original suites of music completely collectively. A large, ever-changing ensemble, abundant in energy & focus, their captivating compositions truly come to life in the band's explosive live performances.


Words from Levitation Orchestra: "Child part IV" is the final part of a suite of music about childhood, lineage and loss. We were wrestling with illusions and realities around our perceptions of ourselves and how we could be just a grain of sand in a desert or a single thread in the ever-growing tapestry of the universe. But perhaps, through ancestry and dependency we could be linked with a greater cycle of being. How connected are we to those who came before and who will come after? "Part IV", the culmination of the suite, brings forward motifs of bright, new life, and sorrow and loss. Two parts of the cycle that are inextricably interwoven."

"Child - Part IV" is released on September 22nd. The album, 'Illusions & Realities', sees release on double-LP vinyl (including a limited Japanese edition with obi strip), CD and digital, on October 29.

PREMIERE: Elisa Elisa - Tropicao [Heat Up Music]

Four years and ten releases later we can say that Apparel Wax -the vinyl-faced hero- has been able to always renew itself and its sound because, as our manifesto says, we try not to submit to any genre.
We wanted every release to be the outcome of a long research through uncommon sounds and APLWAX010, yet again, is an unidentified sonic object picked up by our radar. The last one though!

We didn’t plan it, we just felt like the time has come -eventually- to close this beautiful chapter.
More than one factor led us to take this decision: the progressive concern about the planet (therefore the impossibility to keep producing plastic bags and gadgets), the desire to leave at our peak and to invent something new are just two of them. The constant process behind the renewal of our sound -which we embraced ten years ago with the birth of Apparel Music- sometimes passes through hard choices and we need to feel again that sensation of ‘void’ in order to create something fresh, different, as we did when we started Apparel Wax. We won’t drag our masked hero to a point of sonic stagnation.
We’d like to send you all a big greeting and a heartfelt thanks for every second of your time spent listening to Apparel Wax, it literally meant the world to us. What was initially just a bold idea became a musical reference point for many people around the world, and we will be forever grateful to y’all because, without you, it would have never been possible.
Finally, a huge thanks to all the artists involved in the project. They contributed with their art to a bigger cause, the biggest: music. YOU are the true masked heroes, you are Apparel Wax.
As for us, we’ll live on and our sound too. Our ideas, our passion and dedication for the one and only thing that really makes us happy will never die. Something new will always come on our end because that’s our purpose, our philosophy. Manman, what a journey has been, now on to the next one!

Now let’s talk about the record.

The journey starts with 010A1, a hypnotic, rhythmic Lo-Fi club bomb with a pressing bassline and a hint of Funk (which never hurts); it keeps going with 010A2, an unclassifiable percussive journey exploding in a calm furor of congas and mellow melodic notes. 010B1 is a straight out of the Amazon jungle banger filled with tribal sounds, spacey pads and Brazilian sonic details like cuicas and tamboras; a compelling rhythmic dagger. The record spins to its end with 010B2, a track with various sonic moods: the foggy harmonies and melodies driving towards sinister atmospheres and the solid beat keeping it attached to the ground. The final ambiguous musical touch to this EP full of new things to listen to. Release date > 1st of September 2021.

London-based duo Kit Sebastian share their new single ‘Elegy For Love’, an outsider soul masterpiece. It is the third track to be taken from their forthcoming sophomore album, ‘Melodi', which is released 1st October on Mr Bongo. ‘Melodi' is a joyous expression of vibrant grooves and sophisticated lyricism that transcends boundaries, borders and social-cultural preconceptions. Those familiar with the band's cult classic 2019 debut record 'Mantra Moderne' will instantly recognise their unique take on world music, jazz and psychedelia. With this next album the duo have expanded their language and concepts and transposed them into something larger and more contemplative.

The sultry 'Elegy For Love’ see’s the duo at their very finest. Sounding like a lost Outsider-Soul rarity arranged by Rogério Duprat with Vagif Mustafa Zadeh on the piano; the composition is truly unique. It is their most instrumentally diverse track, with glockenspiels, uplifting trumpets, sweeping strings and vocal melodies that sprinkle magic dust. 

The lyrics talk about a final late-night meeting of a couple as a last futile attempt to save their romance. It juxtaposes their fleshly pleasure with their emotional pain/sorrow, confusion and contempt in a small gloomy bedroom.
