Marking his debut on Murky Digital this May, Mancunian beatmaker DJ Direkt presents the Claret EP, spotlighting his unrestrained musicality over the course of three high-octane rollers.

With several years of experience under his belt, Direkt has already established a reputation as a seasoned selecta, with his Bloc2bloc Radio residency serving as a one-stop shop for the latest tunes from the man himself and a window into his influences. Meanwhile, he’s accrued a number of high-profile signings including a 2020 debut album, Dangerz, on Dutty Bass Audio, the Calamity EP on Conrad Subs’ Maad Ting! label, and a pair of compilation cuts for the fast-rising Nuusic.

Given his penchant for utilising eerie samples, an EP on Murky Digital was a no-brainer. Claret is a thrill-a-minute affair; one need only look to its title track, which opens with piercing leads before bursting into cantankerous, low-end-heavy crescendos, to see that. Shaken to its core by punctuative brass and warped basslines, the track is testament to the northern natural’s uncompromising approach to record production, with its two successors further reaffirming this.

“Krome” commences with a merciless backdrop of stuttering synths and machinated feedback, eventually giving way to a fast-moving combination of striking basslines, nostalgic breaks and percussive clicks. Wrapping things up is “Net”, a comparatively lighter, piano-led number oriented around tentative chords and brooding subs, showcasing another of the rising star’s talents.

The Claret EP hits Juno Download and Spotify on 18 May, reaching the full range of stores and streaming services a week later on 25 May 2021.
