Hi friends! This week we have the great pleasure to share music mixed by Dawidu.  A true musical chameleon, Dawidu delivers house, future jazz, nu disco and synth-pop during the day, and shifts to acid-house, EBM, techno, electro at night. 

As his mind and music never stops, his experiences through living in Paris, London and Bucharest have shaped him to become the founder of @teiubescrecords - the record shop soon became the haunt of movers and shakers such as Nicolas Lutz, Francesco del Garda, Vera, James Dean Brown or Junki, with whom Dawidu shared the decks. He has perfected his skills and expanded his collection through gigs in Berlin, Tbilisi, New-York, Moscow among many others.

Re-editing classic Brazilian boogie/disco funk songs has caught the attention of many around the globe, which has catapulted Fatnotronic to perform in some of the biggest and most renowned festivals in Europe, as well as countless of nightclubs.

// What's the idea behind the mix? And which is the track you wanted to play the most?

It’s a mix of my own research and some promos that I’ve been receiving during the pandemic and some new remixes.


// Which track did you want to play the most and why?

It’s been one year already without gigs... so I want it to play it all tracks i have hahaha.


// What tracks have you been digging which are not included in the mix?

I’ve been digging a lot Altin Gun, Kraak & Smaak, Shina Williams and the new things from DEEWEE, Ed Banger, Partyfine, Multi Culti, Codek.


// We know that you tour around Europe regularly. What difference do you feel between playing for Brazilian and European crowds?

The main thing is that people in Europe is more open minded and the scene is also more concrete. But both places have good vibes.

// Tell us about your upcoming releases. Do you balance your creativity with other disciplines besides music?

There’s been loads of remixes requests during pandemic...  like Kraak & Smaak, Nu Azeite, Rita Lee, Little Animal, Gohu mostly of them i did with my friend Emmo.

My radio show is almost one year old... “TEA WITH ME AND FRIENDS RADIO SHOW” at www.veneno.live every Friday, inviting cool artists like Joe Goddard, Digitalism, Yuksek, Tim Sweeney, Voilaaa, Paula Povoa & Jerge, OsGemeos, Irfane, Poolside, Thomas Von Party, In Flagranti and many others... it’s been great to make the weekly show cuz you get in touch with friends via radio.

And also I'm working in some new music for myself, Phillipi & Rodrigo and 2 new musical projects. Btw I'm cooking a lot and walking my dog 3 times a day, pandemic life. Hopefully this will end soon and we will be able to celebrate again

Hey friends! This week for the 10th Yamcast and interview, we let in on what’s been going on with Amaury Meunier aka @momus - one of the two co-founders of Yamba in person!

A true music lover and serial entrepreneur, Momüs has developed and explored different genres of sound throughout his life. His unique way of viewing the world through the prism of contemporary music culture transcends his Parisian origins. He developed not only a unique talent for connecting and discovering mind-blowing electronic music but also excels in connecting with the crowd while playing.

Letting you in on what’s to come this summer, he sends you his good, Yamba vibes through a happy balearic house-y mix. Enjoy!

// What's the idea behind the mix? 

I wanted to record a mixtape that illustrates the variety of the Yamba day-time sound, so I basically prepared a bunch of timeless tracks that I would play there, old classics and new, and patched them together like I would do at Yamba around sunset time, except this time I used mostly vinyls which I rarely do on the beach! Vinyls are always capricious though… please forgive the cracks and skips here and there.

// How was the mix recorded?

I recorded it at our friends cultural space BOA, using an E&S mixer, 2 turntables and 1 CDJ,  I wanted the mix to sound as smooth as possible in the transitions and flow, not using any effects and letting the tracks do the talking. To acheave this an E&S with rotary mixer is the best instrument, and thanks @dan-ghenacia for lending me his! Actually this mixer used to be Philippe Zdar's (RIP)aka @cassiusofficial... The great French house flows in its analog circuit!

// What have you been up to recently?

We have been working hard on preparing our third season of course, we re-open on May 8th and we can’t wait to unveil Yamba 3.0, we have a lot of surprises for our guests this season…

I have also been spending a lot of time in the studio and produced 3 releases (EPs) on the newfound Yamba Waves music label, I’m very excited as it will be my first musical output, I played one of my tracks toward the end of the mix ;)

// Tell us a bit about Yamba Waves.

With Yamba offering such a strong musical identity and rich live programming, it felt only natural to start the Yamba music label to showcase our stellar artists family. The first outputs will be a series of 3 EPs representing the Yamba sound, from house to disco, funk, italo, and overall balearic sounds, originals produced by me and remixed by friends. For this special series we are also collaborating with incredible visual artists, and will press 300 vinyls for each EP, as well as an NFT to mint them on the ETH blockchain - first release date May 7th, stay tuned!

// How is Yamba season 3 looking?

It’s looking amazing! We entirely updated the back of the house to make sure the experience and service are flawless this season for our guests, we learnt a lot from our 2 previous seasons. We have an exciting program already scheduled in terms of music, mindfulness, and other surprising practitioners. The food menu has also entirely been updated, a full new experience for your taste buds :) 

I’m looking forward to seeing everyone in the sand on May 8th!

From Deep House to Nu Disco to Disco Revival, Dicky Trisco's passion for music and desire for good times is well known. Based on years chasing sound around the globe, he has graced a long list of high profile festivals including the legendary Glastonbury, Electric Elephant, Mareh, Love International, Festival No 6 and many more.

Dicky also ran the well-respected Home Taping Is Killing Music imprint for many years putting out a run of amazing House music releases. Home Taping broke a number of great House artists including The Black Madonna, The Revenge, Nicholas, Borrowed Identity, Eddie C & Medlar amongst others.

// What's the idea behind the mix? Is there any track you wanted to play the most?

Hey, so the idea was to play new stuff I hadn’t played before. New tunes and music I recently found. A lot of DJs during all these lockdowns having been digging through their collections because they have been stuck at home. Me too, which has been great to rediscover stuff you forgot about or didn’t even know. But now with some hope and optimism for the future and things opening again I wanted to focus on new things instead.

// Since the pandemic started you did many livestreams over on Facebook, what was the best part of these?

Yes my livestreams were about keeping in touch with the power of music to move people. I wanted to keep alive for people that feeling when you hear and see someone play music with passion. For me DJing is my life and when I DJ is not just about the music but also a human performance. A social thing with people. I literally want to move people. I need to feel that and to try touch people. I asked people to dance with me wherever they were. And they did. That was a special thing.

// You've been in the scene for a long time now. How did things change for disco music since you started to today? 

DJs have changed due to social media, hype and agents. Dancers have changed due to phones and not being able to smoke on the dance floor. Music has changed because it has no limits which is not always a good thing. I used to play records to smokey rooms packed full of people with no phones. But now the energy is just different. Disco became more popular again. I liked it when many people were still rediscovering it again or discovering it for the first time. But I love the way Disco music now is just one for of many types of world music being played by good DJs around the globe. And I never just played Disco music anyway. That would be boring. I try not to be boring.

// How do you see the current ‘disco edit’ scene?

I don’t want to sound like an old f*** but I think the edit scene is very tired. I am spending much more time and energy on original music projects. It takes more effort and is sometimes the results are a bit shit. But the world needs new music. And the world has changed a lot from 15/20 years ago. So we must change, progress and become stronger with it. And there is a lot of amazing new music. I want to be part of that. That is what I tried to say with this mix. Thanks again for asking me. Her work has an alchemical quality to it; rooted in an intimate observation of the inner and outer environment and then blending diverse elements (video, collage, sound, poetry)in way that we've never seen before. Her sound encompasses themes of sensuality, playfulness and harmony. We hope this mix heightens your senses and lifts your spirit.

// What's the idea behind the mix? And which is the track you wanted to play the most?

Every mix is creating a story. It usually begins slowly, gradually ascending to a peak before descending again in energy and mood. I wanted to create something triumphant. It’s hard to choose which track I wanted to play the most because it’s about the interconnection of the whole for me, but I was happy to include two of my own, Post Hallucination off my ‘Garden of Delight’ EP, and a new track soon to be released called Undiscovered Colour. I ended the mix with a live take of Kate Tempest’s Firesmoke, which is just pure and raw truth for me, and hopefully a little healing balm for the Yamba family at this time. 

// What did you want to portray with your 'Plant Poetry' mixtapes?

The concept of Plant Poetry is to imagine the energetic frequencies of plants through music and storytelling. Plants are a reminder of the basic ingredients for life - water, light, earth and air. They are also receptors of energy, and to my imagination, their language is one of sensitivity, beauty and the subtle joys of being. We cannot really talk about human history without talking about the (symbiotic) relationship we have with plants. So it’s about sharing that perspective, and getting back to the roots. 

// We noticed you have a very cinematic and poetic approach to your music and sets. Tell us a little bit about this process.

Thank you! Actually, watching movies and tv shows as a teenager was where I first started collecting music, and I remember how easily my emotions were manipulated by the soundtrack! I have a background in journalism making narrative important for me and I am a poet, so there is also something that is always trying to transform the mundane, and make life feel like it was a movie. Taking a walk with my headphones and just watching the different scenes of life pass by can easily do that for me.  I also love the concept of sonic cinema. Since music speaks to the subconscious mind, we can be listening to the same sound but it will touch us differently based on our personal experience - our traumas, sensitivities, fears, desires, and thus putting everyone in the movie of their own experience. Obviously, images are more literal and leave less for the imagination to interpret.

//What do you love about Yamba?

Hey friends! I’m really happy to be part of this series, as Yamba is one of my favorite places to play because it’s not only about playing, it’s just about the whole lifestyle and experience: the place, the food, the staff, the people, everything just feels so well put together.

//What’s the idea behind this Yamcast?

For this set in particular I thought of what I like to play when I see the silhouettes of people dancing as the sun goes down in the coast of Lisboa. It’s a bit disco, a bit balearic, but with a steady groove all along, that’s how I like it.

//What have you been up to recently?

I was supposed to kickstart my summer tour this weekend at Yamba, but unluckily quarantine has got me home. Anyhow, I’m taking this time out to rest all the heavy touring I’ve done the last 2 years and prepare my music for the day we all can dance together again. Also, I’ve been woking on new tracks with my Bondi Bondi project I run with my pals Signo and Julian Piaggio.

//What do you love about Yamba?
Oh, there is a lot I love for it. I love the family spirit that’s behind it, its design, the quality of the food and the drinks and its musical orientation. Musically I am more the timeless side myself and I like it when people the guts to not run chasing every trend.

//What was your idea when your played this set at Yamba. recently?
Obviously there was no dancing allowed, so I played a lounger set that was supposed to simply create the perfect ethereal and floating soundscape for the beautiful day at the beach. I knew that Disco and soulfulness are strong elements of the music choice usually and that’s what I’m coming from so wherever it’s welcome I play a set like this. 

//What’s your ritual before a gig?
If you wanna call it a ritual. I always do the following: whenever I come into a venue, a room, I try to feel it. Sometimes that takes only a few minutes, sometimes more. I am trying to intuitively feel into what this room needs to take off. Sometimes this can mean to reset a room at 10bpm lower from the first records to slowly rise the energy again, sometimes it’s continuing exactly there where it is at this very moment and transforming it later. I am also feeling into the question if the room is ready at all for these types of stories I like to tell and sometimes, not often, the answer is a no. And then I just play a set that’s more on the functional side because in the end it’s my job to make the people dance.

Selvagem is one of the most important and influential dance music labels in Brazil and Latin America, with an 8 year history transforming and deepening the electronic music scene in the continent with its anarchic approach that mixes obscure house, techno, soul, jazz and practically any musical genre possible. 

We love the profound yet playful selections Augusto has to offer, that's why we wanted to chat a bit with him regarding music, lifestyle and what's happening nowadays.

//What's the idea behind the mix?

There's no big concept behind it – I just imagined how it would be to play from start to finish at Yamba (which is the way I like to do it anywhere, really) and conceived a set of how it would sound in a nutshell. So it starts with some ambiance, the groove gets it going and I ride the wave until the last beat drops.


//Is there a track(s) in particular that you wanted to highlight?

It was tried and tested on the beach (where I'm isolating myself alongside the family right now) and it feels pretty tight to me, so I would say the last one, which is an instrumental version of Lilás by Djavan – serious balearic jam.


//What music has been inspiring you the most this year and why? Any specific reference(s) or track(s) to share with our audience?

Because of the pandemics, I was deep into ambient music for the first 3 or 4 months of isolation – it was something that helped me to get some peace of mind among so many uncertainties, and listening to upbeat music was somehow disturbing. On this tip I could recommend the latest Jon Hassell album, the Music for Insomniacs record by Tommy Mandel, the last Gigi Masin album and some Italian minimalism like L'Egitto Prima Della Sabbie (by Franco Battiato) and Motore Immobile (by Giusto Piu). Then I went to organize the records in my studio and also my music backup which dated from 17 years ago, so that made me rediscover a shitload of stuff I loved and had forgotten about. Recording mixes and doing some live streams made me come back to the underground dance music I love so if I could share just one track that energizes me every time I listen to it would be "Parabéns" by Marcos Valle.


//What are the plans for this upcoming year both for you as a DJ and for Selvagem and Selva Discos?

I don't want to sound too pessimistic but right now I'm not nurturing many plans as a DJ as I don't think we're going back to the "old normal" anytime soon – when it comes to reopening trends we're the last in line. We're not living in FUN TIMES and I think it's selfish to put other people at risk because some reckless others want to party. I just wish I could play the gigs I had lined up for 2020 which were postponed for 2021, specially Dekmantel and Nuits Sonores, but I'm trying to keep expectations low until we have a world immunization calendar. I'm just trying to keep afloat right now. When it comes to Selva Discos, I delayed most of the 2020 projects to 2021 as I wanted to have a better idea of what's coming and I don't regret taking my time this year. I have a handful of exciting projects ready to be delivered and I'm focusing on the new Novaterra series (which is focused on putting out new music of contemporary artists). The first volume by Zopelar just came out and it's selling well, it's getting some great feedback so I want to focus on that instead of just playing the reissues game.

// What's the idea behind the mix? Is there a track(s) in particular that you wanted to highlight?

I’ve been making mixes in 2 parts lately, like two sides of a tape. I had a cassette player in my car until I moved to Berlin and still have hundreds of tapes back in Canada. I really miss listening to them. If I may highlight one tune, how about the first track on ‘side 2’... it’s my remix of Max Essa’s forthcoming release on Is It Balearic Recordings: Jigsaw Moon.

// You seem like a nomadic person. How does all the travelling affect your creative output?

Yes... quite nomadic indeed. I can’t believe we spent almost 10 years in Berlin... probably because time-wise we didn’t. My wife is the one who enjoys switching things up. If it wasn’t for her I’d still be on the farm in Canada. Lovely to be in the countryside in Portugal now.  Minus the relentless dogs and roosters. Creativity just comes when it comes. I don’t try to force it.

// Tell us more about your label Red Motorbike. What would you say define its sound? Where did you take the inspiration and how did it come to life?

Red Motorbike was born in Canada via Detroit but became the hardest label around town in Berlin. Son of 7 Inches of Love and brother of Common Edit. Just take it and g’wan!

// Are you creative in other areas? Other hobbies besides music?

I used to be the very definition of a ski bum. I spent 10 years in the Canadian Rockies and skied well over a hundred days each year. I miss it terribly... had a bit of a nasty fall and have been trying to repair my knee ever since. I look forward to getting back out in the mountains more than anything.

// What is a song you love but would never play on a set ?

I really love Stompin’ Tom Connors. There’s no one particular song, but whenever I’m pining for a taste of the old country...

// What are your plans for the future?

How can anyone possibly plan anything right now? I think we’re all in the same boat with regards to future plans. Personally I’ve always done music for fun. It’s been a daily operation most of my life and certainly necessary for my mental well being.  Speaking of ‘mixtapes’ I’ve been loosely working on a couple of those. Shall we say Beat Tapes? Hip Hop instrumentals. I’ve always been meaning to put something together.  I’ve been working with a bunch of old friends via the miracle of the internet.  It’s been very inspiring and kept me afloat.  I think the loose plan is to stay in Portugal for the time being. How crazy though to gaze across the sea and watch the sunset over the shores of Nova Scotia!

To end this weird year off, we have the honor to present Yamcast #5, by one of our beloved residents and big music head, Trus'me. Founder of Prime Numbers record label and recently established in Lisboa, David has always been a favourite of ours because of his top selections of both soulful and eclectic records.

Expect to find him playing live for us next summer. In the meantime, we sat down with him for a small chat regarding music, creativity, and what's happening nowadays in his life.

//Who are you?

I’m known as Trus’me, but my real name is David Wolstencroft. I’m from Manchester originally and I fell into music very early with a label called Fat City Recordings who took me under their wing. I started a label called Prime Numbers and that was my platform for releasing music for the last 15 years. 

Now I find myself in Lisbon. I needed a change. I was living in Berlin for 5 years and it’s quite hectic - you know, clubbing, DJing, continuously in the music, I wanted to get away. I wanted sun, I wanted beach but I also wanted the music on the weekend and Berlin’s a 1 hour flight away, so Lisbon seemed like the best place to live. When you’re a constant travelling DJ, you’re always thinking about moving and the sun, the beach and Lisbon is like a little bit of everything. Everyone sort of B-lines through here, so I see everybody at some point in the year, but I also can go to the beach in 10 minutes. So like, this is the place for me right now.

//What's the idea behind the mix?

I think I played one of the opening parties and the closing parties for Yamba so I feel like I have a good idea of the style of music that works there and I’ve tried to show that in the mix. It’s never just stagnant in one style in the night. If we go from slow, soul jams, to disco, to boogie and then it gets more kind of fun, kind of like Detroit house and then it can even get a little bit more minimal towards the end. But the fun factor is that there is always like a push and pull. Whenever it gets a little bit this way, there’s always like “hey we’re on a beach so lets make it more fun, let's make it more happy" and I think that’s the Yamba vibe really. They’re not scared to go into the groove but they’ll always bring it back and it doesn’t matter about the tempo or the style, there will always be that fact that we’re on a beach, in the sun and we’re all outside. I tried to create that within the mix so that hopefully you’ll feel like you’re on the beach dancing and you’re going from a club till midnight.  

//Are you creative in other areas?

My degree was in graphic design and media, so I would say that the creative juices were always rolling but with that particular degree, it was all different areas. Music and production was one of them and I think I just held on to that one more than the other stuff. I’ve always been creative when I was younger, I always took art, I was always drawing, painting, I played an instrument in a windband, I was in orchestra but it was never really ticking the box or giving me that fulfillment. It was only when I found the Detroit sound, where they kind of bring everything together. The jazz, the soul, the hip-hop, the disco. They bring an electronic edge to it and it’s a little bit, you know, coming from Manchester, a rainy city, it was a little bit deeper and it’s a little bit darker but not in a miserable way, just more moody. And that’s when I found that particular world, a globe, where it doesn't matter what genre it is, it's just the vibe of the music. //What's the idea behind the mix? And which is the track you wanted to play the most?

Not only me, but I think all party lovers are eager for a full dance floor since the beginning of the pandemia. Wishing for this moment to arrive, this podcast is for now, just a fantasy of people dancing together again in a summer day.
For the track I wanted to play the most, I just bought some records in Lisbon and there is one super cheap and easy to find, but still absolutely remarkable in my opinion called “D•Mob* Featuring L•R•S•* & D•C•Sarome* ‎– It Is Time To Get Funky”. It's a hip-house that contains a beautiful bassline that every time I listen to it I can almost feel the atmosphere of clubbing again. 
 

//What tracks have you been digging that you couldn't play in this mix?

My range of digging is usually a bit extended into different genres and sometimes not electronic music are a part of it. Consequently, I dig some tracks that are not mixable or in other words, it is just music from bands that are out of the tempo.
Some examples of it could be these tracks that I have been enjoying but they did not fit (yet) in one of my mixings:

//To what has your creativity shifted towards since the pandemic besides music?

I have just started a master’s in Milan, so, unfortunately, besides recording some podcasts, my focus has gone straight to studying again.
Unfortunately I cannot say it is too creative though, I do study very technical things since I am an engineer. 
 

//What does your music say about you?

Music has always worked as an extention of myself according to my feelings, it is a bit hard for me to separate them and it is not my intention.
Music expresses my curiosity in finding weird and peculiar tracks, expresses my willing to meet new people from different parts of the world just by trading music and connecting. But mostly, it reflects a simple feeling of listening to what I love and being able to bring this to people so they can relate and somehow connect with what I am feeling.
Also, I have started to put some time into production. For now just baby steps, but I have teamed up with other producers and this has been a new and super exciting field that I want to explore and know more about. And even though I do believe that my curacy transfers my feelings into music, I am understanding now that the production can reflect it into a deeper level. 


//What connects, in your opinion, the Portuguese and Brazilian sound?

I am ashamed to say that other than being a big fan of Lena D’Agua I am not a knower of Portuguese music so that I can truly talk about it, but first thing that comes to mind would be the genre Batida which I hugely appreciate for some time now. 
The genre is originally a mixture from Africa and Portugal but it feels to me that a lot of resemblance of Axé and Funk can be added to this specially because we are talking about music with High BPM and also about the high energy it stimulates on the dancers. 
But obviously, there must be lots of similarities yet unveiled to me, but now that I am living in Lisbon and digging only here, I am sure I can start learning a lot about it, I am excited for this.

Hey friends! It's an honour for us to present one of the pioneers of the Latin American electronic sound, @chancha_via_circuito . Since 2005, he's been constantly creating; mixing a lot of unheard sounds from the Andes region, Brazilian and Paraguayan sounds from the Amazonian jungles, with many other Latin American influences, always with his own personal touch of electronic production. With many tours around the globe showcasing his unique sound through Live Sets and DJ Sets, we are awaiting for the pandemic to be over to have him play for us at the beach.

For this particular mix, he decided to dive in deep into his record collection to share with us an hour of introspection and slow burners, all filled with his signature Latin American sound.

// What's the idea behind the mix? And which is the track you wanted to play the most?

The idea behind the mix is to share music that I really like and I find inspiring to dance. The track I wanted to play most is Coconutah - Orinoco rock 

// What is a song you love but would never play on a set?

I decided to finish this set with one of that songs that I love but I never play on a party, because it’s not the kind of stuff that usually works on clubs. 

// What difference can you perceive between playing for latin American crowds to crowds from other parts of the world?

It’s different the reaction when the people is not used to listen Latin stuff. Normally in other countries the crowd is surprised by a set like this one. 

// Is there any causes or charities you care about deeply? Tell us a bit about that.

I care about people in need and the preservation of nature, but I don’t participate in charities. I only support the ong La Garganta Poderosa. They do an incredible work in slums in Buenos Aires.
