Special shout out goes to R Beny, who’s music I have listened to constantly over the last month. There's also a track from an Estonian handbell ensemble that we listened to a lot when we were all sharing a house together over 10 years ago. Then there’s some of the music we have been involved in making, Szun Waves and we’ve put one of our own tunes in there. Bleep Mix #89 - Portico Quartet

Samuel Ombasa works behind the counter at Jimmy's Records, Nairobi's premier vinyl dealer. DJing as Sam Tha Digger, he specialises in hip-hop but reaches for anything with soul coursing through it, and present them with a formidable turntablism. A talent who deserves to be known far beyond Nairobi. 

Titled "moneyorthelackthereof", his 1hr40 mix focuses on hip-hop with money as its theme; a rumination on the effects of the pandemic and a wish "to give hope to all of us as we wait for better days." In a new format for Diggers Directory, Sam has videod his set as the 18th edition of his Vinyl Session series, made in partnership with Tha Swissarmyhauz Sound System.

Hey friends! We are blessed to receive a new year with a collaboration from one of our favourite DJ and producer, mister Eddie C. Ontario raised but now whole-world-based, is one of the pioneers of the slow disco edit scene, with more than 50 releases spanning all from hip hop to disco to house music, making him a name to always look out for.

His exquisite taste in music is something we want to share with you, that's why we invited him to record a mixtape for us, as well as sitting down for a small chat about nomadic life, music and creativity.

// What's the idea behind the mix? Is there a track(s) in particular that you wanted to highlight?

I’ve been making mixes in 2 parts lately, like two sides of a tape. I had a cassette player in my car until I moved to Berlin and still have hundreds of tapes back in Canada. I really miss listening to them. If I may highlight one tune, how about the first track on ‘side 2’... it’s my remix of Max Essa’s forthcoming release on Is It Balearic Recordings: Jigsaw Moon.

// You seem like a nomadic person. How does all the travelling affect your creative output?

Yes... quite nomadic indeed. I can’t believe we spent almost 10 years in Berlin... probably because time-wise we didn’t. My wife is the one who enjoys switching things up. If it wasn’t for her I’d still be on the farm in Canada. Lovely to be in the countryside in Portugal now.  Minus the relentless dogs and roosters. Creativity just comes when it comes. I don’t try to force it.

// Tell us more about your label Red Motorbike. What would you say define its sound? Where did you take the inspiration and how did it come to life?

Red Motorbike was born in Canada via Detroit but became the hardest label around town in Berlin. Son of 7 Inches of Love and brother of Common Edit. Just take it and g’wan!

// Are you creative in other areas? Other hobbies besides music?

I used to be the very definition of a ski bum. I spent 10 years in the Canadian Rockies and skied well over a hundred days each year. I miss it terribly... had a bit of a nasty fall and have been trying to repair my knee ever since. I look forward to getting back out in the mountains more than anything.

// What is a song you love but would never play on a set ?

I really love Stompin’ Tom Connors. There’s no one particular song, but whenever I’m pining for a taste of the old country...

// What are your plans for the future?

How can anyone possibly plan anything right now? I think we’re all in the same boat with regards to future plans. Personally I’ve always done music for fun. It’s been a daily operation most of my life and certainly necessary for my mental well being.  Speaking of ‘mixtapes’ I’ve been loosely working on a couple of those. Shall we say Beat Tapes? Hip Hop instrumentals. I’ve always been meaning to put something together.  I’ve been working with a bunch of old friends via the miracle of the internet.  It’s been very inspiring and kept me afloat.  I think the loose plan is to stay in Portugal for the time being. How crazy though to gaze across the sea and watch the sunset over the shores of Nova Scotia!
