face wants - a concept i learned about in class that led to a lot of self reflection and synths

"face wants" is an ode to myself about a concept i learned about in class. if i remember correctly, there are two types of face and one of them is called positive face, which refers to our desire for praise and approval from others. face wants is the idea that we want other people to fulfill our face so we can feel validated, and we do many things to protect or save face, or how we appear to others. 

when i was making “face wants” i thought a lot about how social media is an outlet where we can inflate our self-image and portray the person that we want to be. it can be very confusing to figure out who you are, especially when you’re young and bombarded with messages we find on the internet about who we should like, where we should be, what we should look like and what we should be doing. it made me reflect about my relationship with social media and how sometimes i find myself "shapeshifting to fit inside a framework" that i like, which is, a lot of the time, not the greatest thing for one’s mental health. using instagram as a mirror or a tool for approval can be damaging and is something i’m still working on.

since a lot of my music is kind of slow and mellow, i thought it would be an interesting juxtaposition to pair a modern-day concept like social media with an energetic ‘80s new wave vibe, a genre i hold dear to my heart because of my parents and their love for it.

Jermango Dreaming (@user-734369899) is a Sydney based artist making dreamy spaced out tunes with strong grooves behind it, giving listeners the chance to shake their hips, or kick back and take it easy. Influence is drawn from his dad’s old disco and 80s pop records as well modern psych/pop and dance music.

Shane Tyler is a bassist, producer and multi instrumentalist devoted to the healing powers of groove based sonic attunement. A founding member and bassist of Gardens & Villa and Amo Amo, Shane Tyler lives in Los Angeles and Nevada City California with his beloved partner Lainey and their Maine Coon cat Harlow.

The song lyrics were inspired by visiting the Crystal Hermitage and being transformed by the power of the small cathedral modeled after the one built by Francis of Assisi. This timeless small cathedral had such a beautiful serenity inside I felt like I could spend an entire day in quiet rapture. The walls were adorned with spiritual guides I have come to know and love as they have followed me throughout my spiritual quest. Although one can feel whole and healthy visiting a place of worship by themselves, I felt a further connection sharing the day with my partner and was pleased to know that we can find our own spiritual path yet have it become magnified and even more wondrous when sharing with each other. 
All I've ever wanted for my music is to make people feel like they were in transcendent bliss, just like this day. Whether it's the bliss of a place of worship perched high above the forest line, or the glorious daze of the dingy dance floor. May it wash over you in peace.

@bluematerial is a new project formed by Canadian singer and multi-instrumentalist Thom Gillies. The debut self-titled release is a lo-fi pop album that fuses itself through the sorrows and triumphs of a love lost in a city slowly being transformed by capitalism. The gritty and terse tracking approach was inspired heavily by overlooked, late 70’s funk tracks by artists like Universal Togetherness Band, Evan’s Pyramid and Cloud One.

“Personal” was originally slated to appear on the Blue Material album but was left off to be released as a follow up single. The track is an up-tempo funk song with an influential disco feel, almost reminiscent of early Chic or Prince demos. Till then its ttyl.
