Une expression apparue à la fin du XIXe siècle, dans le domaine militaire. Le terme «nouba» vient de l'arabe classique «nowba», qui signifie «tour». Au Maghreb, il faisait ainsi référence à la musique interprétée – à tour de rôle – par des musiciens devant la maison d'un dignitaire.
