We're pleased to present Robert Takahasi Crouch, an LA based artist who's music explores "the intersection of post-phenomenological listening practices, conceptual sound art, and contemporary electronic music". 

Crouch's music was often played during our Reflexions events at LaVallée in Brussels so we're thrilled to release this podcast for which he played 100% of his unreleased material. A very special listening experience then as you won't be able to hear this music anywhere else.

Steve Pacheco is an artist born and raised in Los Angeles, California who had spent a period of three years in Santa Fe, New Mexico from 2012 to 2015 before returning to LA. From an early age Steve could be seen carrying a red transistor radio set to a classical station and this lo-fi sound has stayed with him into his adult life. His debut album Constellate was released this year on Belgian label Dauw and like many of their releases, it has sold out.

Steve had actually agreed to release his first album ‘The 4th’ with Whitelabrecs however a change in schedule at Dauw meant that Constellate was moved from its scheduled release in fall 2017 meaning it became his debut.
Typically, Steve’s sound begins life as a simple melody or loop typically created using guitar, piano, kalimba, xylophone or other acoustic sources. These are then processed until a texture or drone is achieved and then stored to a library of sound. In the next stage, Steve will then look to assemble these loops and carve out different frequencies from them into a track and this process can take quite a long time. For an extreme example, the final track on this album ‘Completion’ was first drafted in 2010 as Steve does not set out to create something specific – he strives to work until something ‘reveals itself’ so the process is as much down to chance and persistence than anything else.

The 4th is an album themed around cherished memories, loss and letting go as each track is deeply connected to memories he experienced during his time in Sante Fe. The first three tracks are set in Santa Fe whereas the final piece ‘Completion’ is a reference to Steve’s return to Los Angeles for a new job opportunity. The title of the album is a reference to the Chakra system, with the fourth of these being the heart. Whilst the deeply personal events and circumstances that inspired the work within this album may not translate to you the listener, it is intended that the material will inspire memories and feelings dear to you as the warm textures will envelope you.

'7456. Live at Human Resources, Los Angeles' summarizes Fabio Perletta’s recent works 'Genkai' (in collaboration with sound designer for Pioneer Haruo Okada) and 'Ichinen', both released by LINE imprint, in 2016 and 2017 respectively. As it blends the two albums’ distinctive approaches, it reveals their contrasts in terms of hi dynamic range and aesthetics of hesitation, silence and instability. This live recording marks the end of a cycle of works initiated with 'Kaikō' (collaboration with Haruo Okada, 901 Editions, 2014), which ruminates on notions of presence, limitation, contemplation, patience and humility. 

Like the photograph on the cover, the music explores distance, proximity and the necessity to be emotionally detached to achieve balance. It is impossible to enjoy a flower if it’s viewed too closely, it will appear blurry. Like the photograph, the music doesn’t change, instead it exists in potentially infinite variations through its exposure to each listener unique memories, experiences, and perceptions. '7456. Live at Human Resources, Los Angeles' thus asks the questions: is there and where is truth? Are artworks really finished? Do artworks which artists create belong to them? Duality, inconsistency, impermanence, and paradoxes are themes Fabio Perletta is questioning and enjoys his inability or need to solve.

'7456. Live at Human Resources, Los Angeles' was recorded live on June 11, 2017, as part of Fabio Perletta’s VOLUME residency. His appearance was made possible with support from DE.MO./MOVIN’UP, II session 2016. MOVIN’UP II session 2016 was promoted by Ministry of Cultural Heritage and Activities and Tourism, General Directorate for Contemporary Art and Architecture and Urban Suburbs, General Directorate for Performing Arts and GAI – Association for the Circuit of the Young Italian Artists.

This warm and crunchy recording is coming to you live from Gays Hate Techno Gathering 2019 where I got to play this set to my closest and most beloved musical family. The people whose opinion I hold highest in this freaky corner of the universe we live in. There couldn't have been a more perfect place for me to share this music that does a much better job at expressing the beautiful mix of emotions I went through during GHT weekend than words could. I came back from that weekend ten million times more grateful to have the amazing support system I've built in this scene. They have helped me and continue to help me find my place in this scene and feel so welcome. I love you squish family. I love you Gays Hate Techno.

NE302: Yann Novak - From Chicago to Minneapolis by Way of Wisconsin Mix

Yann Novak (b. 1979) is a multidisciplinary artist and composer based in Los Angeles. His work is guided by his unique perspective as a queer autodidact. Informed by his partial color blindness and dyslexia, Novak uses sound and light to explore how these intangible materials can act as catalysts to focus our awareness on our own direct experience. Novak’s diverse body of work—audiovisual installations, performances, architectural interventions, sound diffusions, recording, and prints—invites participants to imagine how divergent our individual perceptions of reality can be.

His work has been experienced through performances at Brisbane Powerhouse, Brisbane (2023), Bemis Center for Contemporary Arts, Omaha (2021); PICA, Portland (2019); Institute of Modern Art, Brisbane (2019); Desert Daze, California (2018); Fylkingen, Stockholm (2018); Iklectik, London (2018); de Young Museum, San Francisco (2016); Hammer Museum, Los Angeles (2016); Vincent Price Art Museum, Monterey Park (2014); The Stone, New York (2011); LACMA, Los Angeles (2010); and Mutek Festival, Montreal (2007); among others. Novak’s work has been exhibited at Dimensions Variable, Miami (2020); Human Resources, Los Angeles (2017); The Getty Villa, Pacific Palisades, California (2016); The Broad, Los Angeles (2015); Commonwealth & Council, Los Angeles (2014); Armory Center for the Arts, Pasadena, California (2011); Soundfjord, London (2010); The Henry Art Gallery, Seattle (2009); and SFMoMA, San Francisco (2009); among others. His compositions have been released by Room40, Touch, LINE, 901 Editions, and Dragon’s Eye Recordings, among others.

Novak’s recent honors include the designation of Cultural Trailblazer by the City of Los Angeles Department of Cultural Affairs (2021-2022), and the California Community Foundation Fellowship for Visual Artists (2019). He has participated in numerous artists residencies including Melbourne Electronic Sound Studio, Melbourne (2019); EMS Elektronmusikstudion, Stockholm (2018); Mountain School of Arts, Los Angeles (2015); Taliesin Artist Residency, Spring Green, Wisconsin (2014); Touch Mentorship Programme, London (2014); Jental Artist Residency, Sharidan, Wyoming (2010), among others.
