Mana Records is a label established in 2017 by Andrea Zarza, curator at the British Library Sound Archive, and Blowing Up The Workshop founder Matthew Kent.

They have released music from artists such as Nicolas Jaar, De Leon, Diptera and more.

’Mana can be understood as a powerful, often magical, force contained within objects. As these objects get passed from one to another, in a cycle of gifting, they retain the spirit of the giver and propel themselves onto the next recipient, weaving a network of social bonds.’

'Publishing works at the intersection of contemporary and archival sound, Mana is a platform redrawing narrative boundaries and perspectives, through a playful, radical and unexpected approach.
The mix contains some forthcoming music on Mana, unreleased tracks from friends, and recent favourites that have passed through our hands. Subtly influenced by the seismic shifts in weather patterns.'

We are kicking off the series after a short summer break with someone who we hold very dearly. We have always seen Basso as an ominous idol, someone whose Discogs -Ratings we used as a firm guidance when discovering new records on Germany’s flea markets. His very own Growing Bin is arguably one of the most consistently excellent vinyl-shops, Youtube-Channels and record-labels out there. 

Now about a year ago, the role-model became a friend, with who we share a subtle sense of humour and a refined taste for the perfectly placed “cheesy-yet-amazing”. This sentiment was somewhat reflected in a mix we did for Basso back then, and he brings it to perfection in this contribution to 5918mins. In his own words, he often used to work place-specific as an artist and tried to do this mix specifically for us, while staying true to himself. So what is the truth of Basso himself? Maybe it is just that he’s a bin – albeit a growing one. And what could be better than that?

Hi everyone.

Ian Wyatt aka Local Artist here to fill you in on the story behind this music. 

2018 was easily the worst year of my life. A number of intense and negative events seemed to collide including the life threatening illness of two of my closest loved ones. I spent a lot of time next to hospital beds trying to keep it together for the people around me and had to uproot a lot of basic human needs like home and security.

At night I kept making music, most of which will never see the light of day but was shared with my inner circle. What you hear on this record is what was reflected back to me after they gave it all a listen. Singing felt good so there’s lots of voice on here. Handing over control, letting in the unknown and giving up on my perfectionism seemed to fit the bill. The later stages of the music were finished while traveling with my partner for 110 days in the Mediterranean.

Gravity was finished in a Moroccan Air BnB after Jack J offered up a tasty arrangement of a previously loose ass live demo. Touch Tone started as a jam with Cloudface then was completely reimagined, keeping his keypad melody, and later touched up with Jack adding live drums. Boys Cry is dedicated to the memory of my Dad. Miss you and love you forever. And Fruits is just being itself.

There was an aging writer called Mortise Koshimitsu who lived in a small apartment. The apartment was beset with problems. It was damp, the wiring was frail and in the summer the leaking pipes added a must and swelling to the wood in the windows that effectively countered the joys of the heat. Koshimitsu’s life had been lived chiseling away at circumstance, and circumstances had not proved easy. There was however, one small reliable rush to be had, and it lay through a gloomy doorway, down some stairs and past a register.

E2E: Any particular environment or context you had in mind when recording this mix?

Myles Mac: Elaborating on the theme, I've been living down on the Mornington Peninsula for the last year or so which is home to some of Australia's coolest birdlife, recently prompting me and my girlfriend to go buy some binoculars and join the fray as amateur birdwatchers. Just from my place here, you can often see some pretty funky birds like the brightly coloured Eastern Rosellas and Rainbow Lorikeets, and we also get the odd visit from a cheeky Laughing Kookaburra looking for a quick bath. There's even a family of Wedge-tailed Eagles that circle around above. I'm sure one day they'll discover some pretty cool birds in outer space too, and I think this could be a nice soundtrack for all the interplanetary birdwatchers out there.

E2E: Any new projects you're working on or milestones with MDC? 

Myles Mac: MDC is into its 10th year now which is a bit of a trip! Just hope to continue sharing memorable listening journeys from all over the place but would like to focus a bit more on emerging locals as there are some incredible DJs down here that don't always get the recognition they should.

Will also be collaborating on a few tasty club shows with the Slow Burn crew next year which I'm quite excited about.

MFM: Salut Dang Khoa, welcome to our podcast series. Had a nice summer?

DK: Hey! Thanks for having me. My summer was pretty cool, I was happy to play some nice festivals and gigs in Europe. I also had a little break to go on vacation with some friends in Marseille to enjoy the sea and the South coast of France.

MFM: Speaking about summer, your music has quite an exotic touch in which melody and percussion both seem to play a pivotal role. Where does that come from? 

DK: At the very beginning, it was simply inspired by the kind of house music I was listening to. But it changed through the years. I had a period when I was into industrial stuff, and I’ve been really inspired by the textures, by that sensation of mechanical groove and how the percussions were used. It kind of lead me to listen to the roots of music, and got into ritual sounds. Regarding the melodies, I don’t know man, it’s maybe because I’ve listened to too much R’n’B when I was a teenager haha.

MFM: But you're not a trained musician in one way or another? Like, can you read notes and play keys or other instruments maybe?

DK: I played violin when i was very young at the Rennes Conservatory of music for 6 years but it was a long time ago and i didn't practice since. I still can read notes but i'm super slow when it's about to play a musical score with other instruments now.

MFM: Would you say you have a D.K. workflow when in the studio?

DK: I like to have a precise idea of what I want to do before I start, even if it’s going to change completely during the process. Also, the shape of a track will really depend on what I’m listening to at the moment. I can easily get lost sometimes, producing something that is totally different of what I’m doing but I always learn some new technics. It’s a good way to find new ideas as well. Most of the time, I work on the same loop until I’m satisfied, almost all the elements of the track have to be already present on this loop, so I can have a vision of what it’s going to look like. Then, I know it will be easy to structure, edit and finish.

MFM: Interesting, for a lot of producers making arrangements seems a tough task or annoying burden even. What's your trick?

DK: I start with the  rhythm structure then focus my work on finding the main theme of a track,  and i build everything around it. If the beat and the  hook are strong enough it's usually not a tough task to make the arrangements.

MFM: You've been putting out music not only as D.K., how come?

DK: I decided to use that 45ACP moniker to focus my work more on sound textures and beats. It was maybe more heavy and club-oriented than what I used to do as D.K.. But now, I’m trying to combine everything in one project to create more contrast in my music. I’m generally interested by the opposition of textures and sounds in music. For instance, I like to mix raw percussion parts with clean drums or melancholic cold pads with naive midi melodies.

MFM: So, what can tell us about the mix? Any specific theme behind it?

DK: It’s a collage of tracks that I’ve been listening to at home recently and some edits I’ve made, from ambient and tribal to Japanese stuff. It’s obviously not what people can expect to hear me play in a festival or club but I would say that it’s more the vibe that I’m trying to create when i’m performing live.

MFM: Last but not least, any exciting news you'd like to share?

DK: I’m wrapping up my next Ep at the moment, it will be the third volume of my trilogy dedicated to club music on Antinote. I also have a release to come out soon on 12th Isle, and a couple of remixes.
