KAOSMOS is the solo ambient, drone project from Istanbul, started in 2013. She creates a fusion of mysterious atmospheric themes and humming cold layers of synthesizers, bringing KAOSMOS to life. She aims to emancipate her listeners from the reality we live in this planet with her music.

"II" is the first track we're revealing from "Lachrymorph", a collaborative full-length album by Petar Petkov and Bartosz Borzeszkowski. To be released on tape & digital on November 25 at http://amekcollective.bandcamp.com

To create their first collaborative full-length “Lachrymorph”, guitarist Petar Petkov and drummer Bartosz Borzeszkowski embarked on a journey to the Unknown – both physically and creatively. Having successfully collaborated in the studio (check out “Scape I", released in "Vanishing Standards II"), the artists felt the need to dig deeper in their mutual audial explorations, which curiously enough stem from their quite different musical backgrounds with Petkov coming from the world of classical guitar and Borzeszkowski - from the field of jazz.

In “Lachrymorph”, Petkov and Borzeszkowski don’t hold preliminary discussions to lead the music the desired way, they do not map their explorations but rely on intuition. Creating in a small cottage in the deep forests of Cassubia, Poland, they seem to have not only opened their own worlds to one another's contributions, but have left the door wide open for all that lurked around to further nuance and deepen their sound. Scattered across the pieces are field recordings, captured during the duo’s walks in the surrounding areas, that further flesh out the world surrounding Petkov and Borzeszkowski's creative process.

“Lachrymorph” is a varied listen, more of a collection of musical snapshots than a narrative-driven experience. Some tracks (“I”, “IV”, “VII”) are deep and captivating soundscape works that make you lose a sense of the actual instruments that went into their creation. Others(“V” and “VI”) are more straightforward and act as a sort of wake-up call, not letting you disintegrate entirely in the hazy musical territories of the record. Most of the music, however, inhabits the intriguing zone between these two polarities, neither direct nor surreal, like glimpses from one world to another.

This track was inspired by the Xian, the eight immortals of Taoism.

The concept of xian has different implications dependent upon the specific context: philosophical, religious, mythological, or other symbolic or cultural occurrence. The Chinese word xian is translatable into English as:

‘Plateau’ is a auditory time-lapse history of Scotland’s Cairngorm high plateau. It is composed of four sections corresponding to the fluctuations of cold (Stadial) and warmer (Interstadial) climatic conditions: 

(1) The Last Glacial Maximum / (Late) Dimlington Stadial (27,000 to 16,000 BP)
(2) The Late-Glacial Interstadial (c.14,670 to 12,900 BP)
(3) The Loch Lomond Stadial (12,900 to 11,700 BP) 
(4) The early Holocene (11,700 to c.9,000 BP)

‘Plateau’ is part of ‘Looking Up’, a research project focusing on the post-glacial landscape, archaeology and heritage of the Scottish Uplands, led by Sam Kelley (University College of Dublin, School of Earth Sciences), Graeme Warren (University College Dublin, School of Archaeology) and Alice Doughty (University of Maine, School of Earth and Climate Sciences). 

The technique used to determine the timing of deglaciation on the high plateau involved project scientists collecting samples of rock containing quartz grains — a common mineral that is resistant to weathering. The rock samples were crushed, pulverised, sieved and sorted, before being subject to magnetic and mineral separation in order to isolate the quartz grains which contain ‘cosmogenic nuclides’ from the other minerals that make up the rock. In turn, these nuclides provided a direct means of timing their prehistoric exposure to cosmic radiation as the overlying cover of ice finally melted. In total, these samples give us a picture in space and time of the former glaciers in the Cairngorms in the face of warming post-glacial climate.

This process of sample collection and analysis directly informed the composition of ‘Plateau’. Stones from the locality were collected and their surface interactions recorded at high frequency sample rates. The resulting waveforms were then subjected to granular analysis, so that ‘single-cycle waveforms’ displaying tonal characteristics could be isolated and extracted. These grains of sound became the foundation of the musical composition.

Plateau

"Strummers Clash " is my second collaboration with composer Matthew Shlomowitz and guitarist Tom Pauwels. Made after "Greetings from Astridplein", (also available on on this channel) this work takes on similar approach, where Tom & I made long distance recordings of Matthew's 2nd duet for 2 e-guitars, followed by me later remixing and flavoring the piece with all sort of "extras", turning it into a radio piece with a cinematic quality. As for the title it is a rare case where the descriptive - content & spirit - and the concept of a homage line up perfectly together, making it a special favorite of mine. This one is for you J.S.

Yaron Deutsch (Tel Aviv, 1978), is a guitarist mainly known for his work in the field of contemporary (classical) music. He is the founder and artistic director of the chamber quartet NIKEL and a frequent guest in Europe’s finest groups & orchestras dedicated to contemporary music. Most often he plays with the acclaimed Klangforum Wien & Musikfabrik ensembles.

As a soloist he performed with the Israeli Philharmonic, Los Angeles Philharmonic, Luzerner Sinfonieorchester, Orchestre Philharmonique du Luxembourg, Radio-Symphonieorchester Wien, Sinfonica Nazionale della Rai (Turin) & SWR Symphonieorchester; playing under conductors: Sylvain Camberling, Titus Engl, Peter Eötvös, Zubin Mehta, Emilio Pomàrico, Peter Rundel, Ilan Volkov & Bas Wiegers to name a few.

Recordings featuring his playing are available on Col Legno, Kairos, Neos, Sub Rosa and Wergo labels.

Apart from his performative activities, he is a professor for contemporary music at the University of Music in Basel (Hochschule für Musik FHNW / Sonic Space Basel) and guitar tutor at the Darmstadt International Summer Courses.
As well he directs the International Festival for Contemporary Chamber Music in Tel Aviv – “Tzlil Meudcan” (In Hebrew: “Updated Tone”).
