Wayward at F8 - 2023

Talk about kicking off the new year with a bang! For the first edition of Wayward in 2023, we had guest DJs Tariq (Direct To Earth), Lisa Rose (Nocturnal Code), and Isolator (Peter Clarke B2B DJ Clairity), a solid lineup of heavy hitters! This month's edition was definitely more techno leaning, and every one of our selectors came through with solid thump!

Wayward at F8 // Jan 2023

On Feb 16 2023, we had our second Wayward event of the year. Events at this time of year can sometimes be hit or miss, as some folks are trying to carry forward healthy New Year’s resolutions, while others get caught up with yet another Hallmark holiday. But that definitely wasn’t the case this night! 

We had a solid turnout from the very beginning until the very end, with a packed dance floor and good vibes as far as the eye could see! Every one of my guest DJs (Count, Ober, and Gav) were completely dialed in, with excellent track selections and flawless mixing.

This was my closing set from that night. I’m quite pleased with it, and I hope you enjoy it as well ❤️

The March 2023 edition of Wayward coincided with St. Patrick's Day, and we certainly had a little luck o' the Irish! It was an exciting event, with Ogan (f.k.a. The General) playing his first ever live set! Wayward regular Friedlander graced the decks with his signature dark melodic beats, and Mike Hays took us on a trip through the cosmos with our first ever dub techno set! There were multiple competing events that night with some heavy hitting international artists, but we were fortunate to have had a solid turnout all night. Much love and gratitude to all the fine folks who joined us on the dancefloor. Sláinte! 🍀

This set was part of a fundraiser for my Burning Man camp, Salty Jacks. It was a magical night and a huge honor to play for such a fine group of friends. Also, this was the first time I ever played a back-to-back set, and it was with my lovely and talented partner Jess.

The July edition of Wayward was a blast! I got to open up the room for David Alec (Pink Mammoth), Friedlander (Camp Synthesis), and Redbloom, and all of them played some excellent tunes! We had a great crowd from start to finish! Since I was on opening duties, I played a little more funky and upbeat than my usual style -- a rare opportunity for me :) 

Huge thanks to my guest DJs, and to all the wonderful people who brought their energy and good vibes to the dancefloor. Hope you're all having a great summer!

Oli Vez is a DJ who has been influenced by jazz, hip-hop, and worldbeat since his childhood, where this music occupied a precious part of the time at home.

Passionate by electronic music for more than 16 years, Oli Vez is often among the first on the dancefloor and among the last few remaining at the end. His rich history enables him to curate the right music to create a special vibe during any moment of the day or the night.

In navigating through different textures of house and minimal music, Oli Vez’s DJ sets are always groovy and aimed to enable dancers to connect more deeply with themselves as well as everyone surrounding them.

For the 14th Pathways we welcome Matt Drake.

Drawing inspiration from the astral arpeggios of 70s Krautrock, ragged Balearic vagabond synth pop of the 80s and proto-rave machine rhythms of the 90s he has dedicated his life to music. 

Being a core part of New Zealand's underground dance music scene since the early 90s - touring clubs, festivals and events across the land, a founding member of Nurture Recordings, running Crucial Records on Auckland's High Street, hosting the decade long Slipstream radio on George FM, running club nights such as Beatstreet, and is a creative director at Lo-Fi Productions who have been creating epic boutique music experiences with the very best house and techno artists from Aotearoa and from across the globe.

This was a big year for Wayward, with some live performances, some exciting B2B sessions, and a lot of talent from across our community. We certainly ended it with a bang! For REC008, we have the honour of showcasing an exciting artist from Switzerland: Manuel Moreno. Manuel has been active in the scene for many years, with releases on labels such as Ritter Butzke, Amaeo, Hive Audio and Kamai Music. In addition to being an active resident at Hive for over ten years, he is well-known for creating iconic brands such as his event series 'Au Revoir' and co-owning the agency 'Send Return'.

His two-track EP 'Elysian' highlights his diverse range of sounds. The title track impresses with a steady groove, captivating chord stabs, and layered synths that demand attention — the perfect closing track for any set. 'Swedenborg', on the other hand, reveals his darker side. A hypnotic, rumbling foundation is elevated by the magnificent voice of Natasha Waters, resulting in a track that will shake dance floors.

To round out the release, two exciting producers join the Reconsider roster. For the main track, Predex, a promising producer from Istanbul, gives 'Elysian' a melodic yet groovy touch. 'Swedenborg' is reinterpreted by none other than James Harcourt, who transforms it into a dark, tribal dancefloor belter with his signature progressive sound.

Manuel Moreno - Elysian (Predex Remix) [Reconsider Music]

Yaz is a San Francisco-based DJ who enjoys playing tech house, deep tech, minimal, and techno. He is an active member of the Burning Man community and underground house/techno community in San Francisco.

Yaz has played all over San Francisco at all the major venues, including Public Works, Mighty / The Great Northern, Monarch, Midway, and Halcyon. He was a resident DJ at the venerated Wish Lounge for 5+ years, running his monthly Wayward party right up until the pandemic caused Wish to close. Once it was safe to do so, he has taken Wayward to its new home F8 Nightclub, and has been a resident there since August 2021. 

Yaz has collaborated with many different promoters and labels, and has opened and closed for (or shared billing with) well-known artists including John Digweed, Bob Moses, The Scumfrog, Tommy Four Seven, John Monkman, Technasia, and Marques Wyatt, to name a few.

His love for Burning Man is only rivaled by his love for music. His styles go from deep tech, minimal and techno to indie dance. You can find him on the playa playing for his camp DeMentha, and everywhere else for The Janky Barge, Airpusher, and Icarus. Yaz has also participated in many fundraisers in San Francisco for the aforementioned camps, as well as DISTRIKT, Mayan Warrior, the Salty Jacks, and others.
