2025-01-17 Live at Wayward

What a way to start off the new year! For January 2025, Wayward did a rare Friday front room takeover at F8, and we started the year off with a bang! Our extended lineup consisted of Xyme, Justyn Myers, Adam Iko, OGAN, and yours truly, then we finished off the night with a little B2B session between OGAN and Yaz (left out of this recording -- by that point OGAN was still on point, but I was half DJ half mezcal)... All the homies came out of the woodwork, the dancefloor was packed, and I'm still smiling thinking about it 2 weeks later!

For the February 2025 edition of Wayward, I was very excited to drop a bunch of tracks that I had just picked up the week prior, and was salivating at the thought of playing them in a club setting! It was a super fun night, and I was joined on the decks by some very talented artists: DJ Cira (Adult Services), Jonboy (Disco Katz), and fellow DeMentha member Feen. Wayward at F8 // February 2025

I’m excited to share the 14th installment of the KohBeats mix series — and the first one since 2023! Each mix usually starts with a concept: sometimes it’s a single track, a mood, or an inspiring party. From there, I curate a shortlist of tracks, arrange them, test transitions and flow, tweak things, and finally record the mix live.

This is a bit different from my live sets, where I build playlists in advance but improvise in the moment without a pre-planned order. I love preparing these mixes because it lets me explore a wider range of sounds, including tracks that aren’t always aimed directly at the dancefloor. Over the past year or so, I’ve been feeling good about my live sets and hadn’t really been inspired to put together a KohBeats mix — so I didn’t force it.

The inspiration for this one came from a warehouse party in March 2025, hosted by my Burning Man camp, DeMentha. I played the closing set during sunrise and had a vision for the vibe I wanted to create: starting deep and minimal, creating higher energy moments for the dancefloor, and then gradually bringing warmth and emotive, uplifting vibes as the night gave way to morning. While I was happy with the tracks and the crowd’s response that night, when I listened back to the live recording, the mixing and flow just didn’t feel quite right. Still, I loved the overall idea — so I decided to rework it for KohBeats. I swapped out a few tracks, improved the flow, and recorded it properly while keeping the spirit of that sunrise set alive.

KohBeats #14: Warehouse Sunrise

For the March 2025 edition of Wayward, in celebration of Lisa Rose's 50th birthday, we decided to have a techno-forward Wayward! I got to open up the room for OGAN (DeMentha), Lisa Rose, and Friedlander (who closed out with a 90 minute set). The energy in the room was electric right through to the end when the lights came on! Yaz is a San Francisco-based DJ who enjoys playing tech house, deep tech, minimal, and techno. He is an active member of the Burning Man community and underground house/techno community in San Francisco.

Yaz has played all over San Francisco at all the major venues, including Public Works, Mighty / The Great Northern, Monarch, Midway, and Halcyon. He was a resident DJ at the venerated Wish Lounge for 5+ years, running his monthly Wayward party right up until the pandemic caused Wish to close. Once it was safe to do so, he has taken Wayward to its new home F8 Nightclub, and has been a resident there since August 2021. 

Yaz has collaborated with many different promoters and labels, and has opened and closed for (or shared billing with) well-known artists including John Digweed, Bob Moses, The Scumfrog, Tommy Four Seven, John Monkman, Technasia, and Marques Wyatt, to name a few.

His love for Burning Man is only rivaled by his love for music. His styles go from deep tech, minimal and techno to indie dance. You can find him on the playa playing for his camp DeMentha, and everywhere else for The Janky Barge, Airpusher, and Icarus. Yaz has also participated in many fundraisers in San Francisco for the aforementioned camps, as well as DISTRIKT, Mayan Warrior, the Salty Jacks, and others.
