It's been extremely relieving to connect the dots of the different musical styles I'm experimenting with to create a coherent storyline and I was fortunate enough to have a label on my side that gave me the freedom to do this exactly how I imagined.

There was a flickering glow which dazzled and sparkled atop the water of the lake. The last of the summer sunlight was beaming down warm and hot on the open expanse as swimmers took deep breaths and swam in what would be the last of the season.

It was magical up here in the mountains, some called it a zen like paradise. He’d spent many months here, sat by the side of the lake, sketching and drawing the sights and things he saw before him.

Never had he imagined that it might all come to an end quite so quickly for soon he would be back home amongst the tall buildings and the concrete constabulary.
 
Ozel AB is a producer who has released an array of forward thinking electronic and club focussed EP’s on the likes of Workshop, Lobster Theremin and Third Ear.

Now he is launching his own record label, an opportunity for him to showcase recent material and explore new sounds. The first EP features four tracks, with this being the A1 taken from the record.

As the weekend approached, the anticipation of the activities that would soon ensue began to take over. For 48 hours, there would be no mention of work, no thoughts of the daily responsibilities that came with it, only freedom mattered, and they were going to take advantage of every single moment. The club was the destination, a place to escape the outside world. When they descended down those stairs and into the darkness, they knew they'd never want to leave.

Roy Mills launched his Local Knowledge label, as a platform to celebrate community and club culture, towards the end of September 2020 and since then he's welcomed Hed Ardennes for an EP and a slew of artists for a charity compilation. Now, following appearances on Room II Records, Pressure Dome and Elkka’s femme culture, he takes care of the third release on the imprint with three tracks aimed to be played at different times in the club. From intricate drum patterns and hypnotic bass lines to off kilter percussion and meticulous sound design, the EP demonstrates Roy's knack for capturing different moods and feelings, whilst saluting the thrill of clubland.

Though no longer based in Sydney’s Inner West, jobfit’s music continues to hold space for those who traverse its parks, pubs and parties.

For their third release on Pure Space, jobfit share their new EP ‘time to make Daddy some money’.

Full of swirling synths, deep bass and acidic tastes, this EP continues jobfit’s splicing together of poetry and dance music. Where crisp percussion arrests tension, immersive pads hold you in - releasing only to rebuild again and again.

This release/rebuild is the perfect support for the vocals. Written between Sydney’s two lockdowns, the EP is a woozy state of inertia. There are sneaks of escape - outta Sydney, on the street, in the studio. But there’s also a state of being trapped - in the kitchen, in the Poet, in the interior. Both inSide and inSelf. The vocalist always uneasy, knowing what could come. And then it does: ‘Collar Mourning’ rounds us out for another stretch between “four walls and 34 square metres / captures and holds”.

Yet there are always moments of respite, a settling into place, making peace, the “alla norma”. It’s dance music for those stuck at home! For driving! For traversing space and time, beer belly wriggling into jeans, lurching up Newtown’s drunken pipeline, reminiscing on times connecting, over there, or there, or there… “smiling, and knowing and turning still.”

Leck Meine Bahn - they are back! These two space cadets bring back home some heavy radiated elements from outer space. After a two year odyssey, they return back to mother earth with an insane Live Set (Backslash Festival 2022) and a Battery Point EP full of blasting fusion energy. Their musical capsule comes packed with new textures, mixed up with an unholy but tasty reduction of Jungle and Trance substances melting with a fusion of Bass Music and industrial space chugs.
This cosmologic sound match is leading to a new co-dependency between gravity and bass. Their enigmatic grooves are ponderous yet playful and every alien ear which listened to this intergalactic call so far, could not escape this quirky dance atmosphere. Brainwaves music commanders aka LMB are Estebahn and Yolek and this composition is their second EP which results to an extension of new boundaries in our further rave solar system. Including two massive remixes by Jan Loup and Nuevo Prohibido to beam up every sort of flesh to the the next bass portal. Space alert!

yeyeh founder Pieter Jansen has now conjured up another unlikely but inspired joint album, this time featuring award-winning free-jazz vocalist https://soundcloud.com/greetjebijmakwintet and leftfield house, techno and ambient producer https://soundcloud.com/oceanicocean.

The project has its roots in a chance meeting between Jansen and Bijma, a legendary figure on the Dutch jazz scene who in 1990 became the first woman to win the country’s top jazz accolade, the VPRO/Boy Edgar award. Apart from having previously worked with the likes of Anna Homler (aka Breadwoman), Jasper van ’t Hof, Han Bennink, Louis Andriessen, Willem Breuker and her own solo projects, she’s in a league of her own.

Jansen is a big fan of Bijma’s 1996 heavily electronic collaboration with Jasper van’t Hof and Pierre Favre, Freezing Screens, and was with the friend who first introduced him to it when he bumped into Bijma. 
Excited to meet someone who had made one of his favourite records, Jansen took the opportunity to ask Bijma if she would be interested in working with young electronic music producers. To Jansen’s delight, Bijma quickly agreed.

Weeks later, Bijma stepped into the studio with Oceanic, a rising star of the Dutch electronic underground whose releases as Oceanic for Nous’klaer Audio and BAKK Plafond revolve around mechanical rhythms, opaque ambient textures, minimalist melodic movements and effervescent electronics. The pair quickly connected on an emotional and musical level, with Bijma taking her cues from Oceanic’s electronic sounds and rhythms, and Oceanic drawing inspiration from Bijma’s dexterous, mind-bending and otherworldly vocalizations.

After two hugely productive days, the cross-generational duo had completed a couple of mesmerizing songs – breathlessly haunting album opener “Swallow a Party” and chilly ambient closer “A Window Drifting” – and recorded several hours or improvisations that Oceanic later edited, layered-up and re-modelled.

The results are little less than spellbinding. The range and versatility of Bijma’s vocalizations is breathtaking, while Oceanic’s music – which cleverly incorporates the free-jazz singer’s vocal notes, tones and proclamations – swings between becalmed beauty and breathless intensity. 

Some of the set’s most striking moments are those where Oceanic re-contextualizes Bijma’s varied vocal sounds with the dancefloor in mind. On the pulsating “Technicolour Memories”, up-tempo “Step Snakes” and hypnotic “Never Done”, Bijma’s scat outbursts not only ride Oceanic’s rhythms, but also form part of the densely layered percussion tracks beneath. 

Like the release’s more downtempo and ethereal moments, these hybrid organic-synthetic compositions defy easy categorization, offering a unique brand of alien electronic/acoustic musical fusion that lingers long in the memory.
