Alan Bissett, Glenfiddich Spirit of Scotland Writer of the Year 2011, recites his own poem "Vote Britain" at Hear the Nation. 

Alan is an internationally renowned novelist and playwright. Born in 1975 he grew up in Hallglen, a housing scheme on the outskirts of Falkirk. 

Graduating from Stirling University, where he studied English, Alan worked very briefly as an English teacher before deciding to study for a PhD - supporting himself by selling books in Waterstones. Alan didn’t get his PhD, but he did publish his debut novel.

Alan’s work is widely acclaimed and now includes film and documentary making. He is very much in demand as a live act, and has performed at prestigious international festivals in New York, Toronto, the Hague, Melbourne, Bejing, Zagreb and Kikinda (Serbia).

Interestingly, the Daily Record newspaper named him the 46th Hottest Man in Scotland in 2008. He hasn’t been on the list since, which he is very disappointed about!

Hear the Nation was a successful evening of inspirational speaking, poetry and music hosted by Yes North East Fife on the 16th May 2013 at the Corn Exchange in Cupar.
