Descendant

This compo is in Db, 4/4.  Somehow the creative process resulted in a bit of a Merengue vibe.  Merengue is a dance music (not food) that originated in Dominican Republic.  Harmonies are voiced primarily in Diatonic 4ths with 3rds and a few 10ths.  Piano line spins melodies from the Sax Harmonies.  Instruments are Saxes, Trombones, Trumpets, Tuba, Piano, Synth.  Bass line, added to later sections, is more of a Samba rhythm since that keeps the momentum.  As always please feel free to send me your thoughts!

Searchin' For An Aurora

While on the NASA website I found an image of Olympus Mons from the Viking 1 Orbiter which gave me the idea for this song.  Olympus Mons is the largest volcano in our solar system, over 25 miles high from it's base to it's summit. The base is as large an area as the state of Arizona. 

I have included into this number recordings from Mars by the Perseverance rover. These recordings include the Ingenuity helicopter on April 30, 2021 as it flew on Mars for the fourth time, sounds of the Perseverance rover driving on Mars, the Perseverance rover as it laser zaps a Mars rock and wind sounds on Mars.

Special thanks to Kate Nord for the wonderful vocals on the track.

There was a piano chord first. There was also a fiddle melody and a quiet bass. But while I was making it, everything went away. And it became a song that the sound was powerful for the first time. It's definitely a song I made. But, well, I can't think of a title. The first title is "Midnight Composer", but let's make it next.

The piece feels most comfortable on big fat speakers, which is inversely proportional to how the majority of listeners then are likely to feel.

Obviously, this is purely functional music (how do I drive annoying guests out of my flat? How do I tell my co-workers that I want the meeting to end? How do I commit the perfect crime?).
