The Battle of Gaixia and Xiang Yu's subsequent defeat at Wu River mark one of the most iconic and tragic moments in Chinese history, bringing the Chu-Han Contention to its dramatic conclusion. This composition captures the intense emotions and epic scale of these pivotal events, translating them into a musical narrative that reflects the rise and fall of a legendary hero.
The piece begins with a stark, foreboding atmosphere, evoking the tension before the final battle. Dissonant harmonies and irregular rhythms represent the chaos of war, as forces clash violently on the battlefield. The lower registers of the ensemble create a sense of heaviness and impending doom, symbolizing Xiang Yu’s army, trapped and outnumbered.
The climax of the piece arrives at the Wu River, where Xiang Yu makes his final stand. The music swells with defiant energy, as Xiang Yu fights valiantly, refusing to surrender despite the inevitable defeat. His last battle is portrayed with thunderous crescendos, but ultimately, the music quiets, as Xiang Yu, facing the impossibility of escape, chooses to end his own life by the river.

The composition concludes with a somber, reflective epilogue. A lone melody floats above sparse accompaniment, representing Xiang Yu’s undying legacy as a tragic hero of Chinese history. Though defeated, his valor and ambition leave an indelible mark on the collective memory, a symbol of pride and the timelessness of human struggle.

Adventures at Haunted Castle

Having been a Universal Edition composer since April 2022, Yiu-Kwong Chung is one of Taiwan’s best-known and most sought-after composers. He was a Professor of Music at the National Taiwan University of Arts until 2022 and was the General Director of the Taipei Chinese Orchestra (TCO) from 2007 to 2015. During his tenure with TCO, he has written concerti for numerous top-class soloists, including percussionist Evelyn Glennie, trombonist Christian Lindberg, saxophonist Claude Delangle, cellist Mischa Maisky and Anssi Karttunen, flutists Pierre-Yves Artaud and Sharon Bezaly, in addition to renowned Kronos Quartet; all were world-premiered by the TCO. In June 2012, he conducted the orchestra’s European Tour (with soloist Evelyn Glennie). He staged performances in Bridgewater Hall in Manchester and Le Théâtre du Châtelet in Paris that brought immediate international fame to the Orchestra. From 2009 to 2015, he produced six CDs released worldwide by Swedish BIS Records.
