The album comes four years after her previous studio album BETWEEN MY HEAD AND THE SKY which received rave reviews and was voted one of Mojo Magazine’s Albums Of the Year. 

That same year Ono was awarded both the Lifetime Achievement Award by Mojo and The Venice Biennale Golden Lion Award for her ground-breaking music and art. 

TAKE ME TO THE LAND OF HELL was recorded in New York and was producedby Yoko Ono, Sean Lennon and Yuka Honda. 

YOKO ONO PLASTIC ONO BANDalso includes members of Cornelius and Cibo Matto, plus – for this album – tUnEyArDs, Questlove, Nels Cline and Andrew Wyatt. 

The album includes remixes by Mike D & Adrock and Keigo "Cornelius" Oyamada. 

The record was planned and made during a hugely productive period which saw Ono’s 2012 show TO THE LIGHT at London’s Serpentine Gallery break attendance records; she then went on to open HALF-A-WIND SHOW, a major retrospective in Frankfurt, finish her instruction book ACORN, travel extensively to oversee various museum shows, score her 10thNo 1 hit HOLD ME on the Billboard Dance Chart, actively campaign against fracking in New York State, win the MTV O Music Award for 'Digital Genius' and – most recently – plan the Meltdown Festival at Southbank, London, which she curated. 

Yoko’s curatorship is already being hailed as the best in the 20 year history of the festival which this year included a coruscating opening night performance by YOKO ONO PLASTIC ONO BAND, and guest appearances by Ono with Cibo Matto, Peaches, Kim Gordon and a closing night collaborative performance with Siouxsie of Ono’s seminal “Walking On Thin Ice”. 

Meltdown 2013 featured a huge cross–section of artists including Savages, Kim Gordon, Siouxsie, Cibo Matto, Bo Ningen, Thurston Moore, Iggy Pop, Deerhoof, Patti Smith, Peaches, Marianne Faithfull, Boy George, Patrick Wolf, Reggie Watts, Viv Albertine, Alva Noto and Ryuichi Sakamoto, Pussy Riot and Immortal Technique.

Clubs ignited instantly upon the first notes of the chugging disco bassline, grinding new wave guitars and Yoko’s signature “ai, ai, ai, ai …”  Fast forward to 2003 and major remixes of the single by Danny Tenaglia, Pet Shop Boys, Peter Rauhofer and Felix Da Housecat kicking off Ono’s streak of 10 #1 club hits including “Talking To The Universe”, “I’m Not Getting Enough”, “No No No” and her last chart topper “Hold Me”.

Grammy Award-winning house music DJ, producer and label owner PETER RAUHAUFOR, best known for his dance remixes for Madonna, Cher, Whitney Houston, Britney Spears, Mariah Carey, Rihanna, Adele, Pet Shop Boys and Depeche Mode, passed away in May after a long battle with brain cancer. 

Peter was a loyal supporter and fan of my work and collaborated with me on several remix singles. 

ONO performed multiple times at his long-standing Saturday night residency at The Roxy Theatre to transfixed and elated capacity crowds. 

My label partners (MIND TRAIN and TWISTED RECORDS) decided to include this new edit as a tribute, and having already made a donation in his memory to the American Cancer Society, felt it would be appropriate to donate the proceeds of Peter's work to the ACS as well.

Yoko Ono almost needs no introduction. The 80-year-old artist, activist and musician recently told a reporter for The Australian that “art is breathing” -- and she has been breathing, and making art for more than half a century. Among her recent projects is a new album with the Plastic Ono Band called Take Me To The Land of Hell. Her son, Sean Lennon, produced it -- and it features guest appearances from Lenny Kravitz, Yuka Honda, Questlove, and more. She joins us to discuss.

Interview Highlights

Yoko Ono on her son Sean Lennon discovering the Beatles music:

John and I decided that we [were] not going to influence him with our songs or our careers. So he didn't know about John being a Beatle. So one day he came back, he was about four or five, somebody told him. [Sean said], "Daddy, are you a Beatle?" So John says, "Well, I uh, was."

On working with Sean on 'Take Me to the Land of Hell':

I gotta give it to my son. He's kind of like, "Mom, do you think you can write another song here?" And I just write it, while we were doing things in the studio. So many songs are like that. It just inspires me because he says it. I made him into the music director of my work. I didn't know whether that was a good idea or not. Many people said, "Don't work with your son! That's the worst thing you can do!" So they said that and that's why I [went] the opposite.

On the song "Bad Dancer":

Whenever there's a song, dance music, my body starts to dance. I can't help it! I'm just very much into dance. Even when I was four years old, you see it in a film that my mother and father made. I'm a little girl who is just dancing all the time. I think dancing is a very healthy way of going through life -- instead of marching. I'm a bad dancer! But I love it.

It was after the rain. I was looking out from my window. The buildings on the opposite side of the park were shining with a touch of pink in the evening light. There was a faint rainbow hanging in the park right in front of my eyes. 

I said to myself “Wait a minute, an arch is a segment of a circle and usually it has a support underneath it. Is there a support for a rainbow like the fertile ground that supports the trees? Is there a part of a rainbow we’re not seeing? It could even be that a rainbow is a circle!” 

Then a tiny voice said to me “Yes, a rainbow is a circle, and more. You are just shown an inkling of a rainbow. Just like the best of you think and communicate in shorthand, things are shown to you in little bits. 

And you know why?” I heard myself say 

“Why?” with an exclamation point. 

A perfect silence is what came back. Only the park was shimmering in its full glow. The little voice started to whisper to me again, this time in what i call long hand. I kept writing it down as it came to me until it was about a hundred pages, and the sun started to rise from the window.

The Ghost of a Saber Tooth Tiger - Formica Flowers

Yoko Ono is nothing less than a cultural icon. From her early years in New York’s artistic avant-garde, to her marriage and collaborations with Beatle John Lennon, to her creative activism promoting peace, Ono has made, and continues to make, a powerful impact on our world.

Sean Lennon – Yoko Ono and John Lennon’s son born in 1975 – is a creative musician in his own right, and has been performing with and directing his mother’s Plastic Ono Band for years. 

Spinning On Air host/producer David Garland invited Sean to create a playlist of his mother’s music, and present it with her on Mother’s Day.

In the course of the program, Yoko and Sean tell many interesting stories. They speak intimately about the music, and reminisce about the events that inspired the compositions. Sean reacts to a John Lennon recording he’s hearing for the first time.

The music ranges from the proto-punk intensity of “Why” (1970), which features Ono’s unique, startling vocalizations and John Lennon’s noise guitar, to the gentle “I’m Going Away Smiling” (2009), for which Sean played the lyrical piano accompaniment.

Yoko Ono is nearing her 80th birthday, and going strong.

Where did the song come from?
Well, one day, I was walking through the countryside and there was this massive field of sunflowers. It seemed to me like they were marching over the hill, like in Fantasia with all the brooms. They were all looking up to the sky and they seemed like a nation of future beings with hope and positivity. It’s very simple, the melody. I used to listen to this Japanese record when I was a toddler, very simple with drums and flutes. What I remembered became the melody for this song. It’s about the essence of life and sunshine drying your tears.

We were really happy to get involved with the House of Fairytales: it’s encouraging children to use their minds and their imaginations, to be creative. Day of the Sunflowers seemed ideal for what they were doing. We were asked to provide something that people could play at home and, of all the stuff we’ve done, it’s something with a very strong, clear melody. I have a two-year-old daughter, but there was something childlike in our music anyway, I think, before she came along. Kids’ reaction to music is really instant: you can play them something and they either want to hear it again and again or they don’t like it at all.

Our version of Day of the Sunflowers features vocals by Yoko Ono, who we got in touch with after finding out she was a fan of another of our songs, Romeo. I think she was a bit wary of going into the studio with a bunch of DJ/producers, but she was great. 

She said: “Do you want me to do the Yoko Ono thing?” and we said: “Yes please!” She went off with her wails — I love all that: it’s freedom and expression and it’s human. She’s 76, getting on, but she looked very well and youthful.
