Next up on Time Is Now is a fresh cut from prolific Japanese producer Stones Taro: a kaleidoscopic EP which traverses the boundaries of genre to create something truly unique, occupying the intersection of UKG, electro, breaks and house. 

After the raging success of previous releases on Scuffed Recordings, Breaks ‘N’ Pieces and more recently on his own imprint, NC4K, the Kyoto producer makes his Time Is Now solo debut with Super Hot Floor EP. Kicking things off is the pacey, club-ready banger ‘Integration’ with stuttering synths and a driving bassline which leave little room for respite beneath a fierce breakbeat electro rhythm. On ‘Straight Walk’ Taro offers a new take on speed garage with a sharp two-step rhythm and the suggestion of acid-tinged synth stabs which lure you in before reaching their full form in high-energy intervals of 4X4. After ‘Watching You’ strips things back, the B-side brings the energy with Pulse X style stabs (‘Super Hot Floor’) and old school house-indebted Korg organ melodies a la Robin S (‘Dry Flower’).

"CoOp Presents crew enter 2022 with the help of some legends from the world of UK dance music; a three-track EP of seriously uplifting broken step from the dons Groove Chronicles.

Groove Chronicles have releases dating back to 1997 and are legendary in the world of UKG.

Founded by Noodles, he is now working with longtime associate, Dubchild.

Noodles has been working in the music game for three decades, from spinning at raves in Paris when he was 17, to serving it up behind the record shop counter, to running his own label, DPR. Responsible for bonafide classics like 'Stone Cold', 'Myron' & 'Poor Man's Break', his work serves as a blueprint for many sounds across the UK bass spectrum.

Leicester legend, Dubchild, stems from a musical background of reggae, hip hop, house, garage & jungle. He's released an array of dubstep & instrumental grime records through various labels since the early noughties, including Caspa's Storming Productions & Heavy Artillery, amongst others.

The duo also combine under the moniker Nu-Agenda with their own hybrid house style, and have had collective support over the years from stations such as 1Xtra, NTS, Kiss, Reprezent & Rinse, DJs such as Annie Mac, Zane Lowe, Mary Anne Hobbs & Ras Kwame, and publications like iD, Fact, DJ Mag & Crack Magazine, to name a few.

So to the music, a triple threat of bass music, riding along at roughly 130bpm.

We kick off with some pure 'Joy', which does what it says on the tin. This is feel-good vibes straight from the edge; the duo's unique blend of broken 2step garage fusion incorporates skippy drums, soulful r&b tinged vocals, gliding horns, smooth rhodes and some serious bassweight.

'Take Me Away' is on a more traditional 2Step vein. Another soulful vocal rides across a UKG backing, complete with killer subs, organ stabs and a sprinkle of jungle chops scattered on top to liven up the dance.

The set closes with the BrokenStep mix of 'Inside Stepping'. This is a slightly more stripped deeper one, but still blending 2Step sonics on top of a brokenstep riddim, with soulful touches and clash shouts. Heads-down foundation business for the steppers."

Yosh returns with his fourth Time Is Now release. Following the success of UKG-focused 5-tracker, ‘The Warning’ released at the end of last year, Modulate EP sees the London producer put his inimitable spin on breaks, translating into 4 tracks firmly rooted in the genre’s antecedents yet offering something distinctly new.

‘New Dawn’ is a prime example of Yosh’s priceless ability to create something which is at once hard-hitting and soulful with clattering breaks and luscious vocals which float blissfully above them. Next up, ‘Modulate’ adds a thumping 4/4 beat into the equation, creating an assertive march with plenty of swing before ‘Snap Back’ brings the ruffage with a sharp two-step rhythm and fierce bass womps. Finally, it’s up to ‘Track 1’ to close proceedings. A real heater, a syncopated triplet rhythm lends it its driving propulsion - almost resembling the club sounds native to northeastern regions of the US such as Jersey and Baltimore. Thudding assertively beneath the stylistic tropes of UKG, this makes for a truly unique sound and solidifies Yosh’s status as a highly innovative and forward-facing producer..

The monthly hike with Virgil always concludes with a visit to 點心餅家 - Touch Of The Heart Bakery. A morning connecting with nature and reminiscing about Hong Kong always leads us to this legendary institution. Established in 1922, by a family of immigrants from Hong Kong. This place never fails to fascinate me on multiple fronts every single time I go. Whether it is the sizzling tray of egg tarts coming straight out of the oven, seeing the bakers zoned in, creating magic or its ability to transport me spiritually to Hong Kong. Something I don’t think I can comprehend myself.

So to celebrate 100 Years of Touch Of The Heart Bakery. We have curated this special project with some mega talented people. Hopefully this reflecting 4 Generations, dedication to the craft. The craft of literally touching hearts and creating smiles. Also was super to see Florence, a long time friend and next in line to take over at the bakery. Both being in the same year class at Chinese School decades ago, sharing a love for Marvin Gaye, Ryo Fukui and of course edits. She left me with some wonderful words by her late grandfather (Heard this from Jimmy Iovine too!) - “Give yourself time, to make something that will last forever. Egg Tart. A Timeless Art”
