Next up on Time Is Now is a fresh cut from prolific Japanese producer Stones Taro: a kaleidoscopic EP which traverses the boundaries of genre to create something truly unique, occupying the intersection of UKG, electro, breaks and house. 

After the raging success of previous releases on Scuffed Recordings, Breaks ‘N’ Pieces and more recently on his own imprint, NC4K, the Kyoto producer makes his Time Is Now solo debut with Super Hot Floor EP. Kicking things off is the pacey, club-ready banger ‘Integration’ with stuttering synths and a driving bassline which leave little room for respite beneath a fierce breakbeat electro rhythm. On ‘Straight Walk’ Taro offers a new take on speed garage with a sharp two-step rhythm and the suggestion of acid-tinged synth stabs which lure you in before reaching their full form in high-energy intervals of 4X4. After ‘Watching You’ strips things back, the B-side brings the energy with Pulse X style stabs (‘Super Hot Floor’) and old school house-indebted Korg organ melodies a la Robin S (‘Dry Flower’).

Dedicated to garage house sounds, Reptile Mob is the brand-new vinyl sub-label of renowned imprint GLBDOM. Various Artists 'REPWIND 001' is the first offering from the label, featuring five bussin jams!

Tight, choppy vocals, chord stabs and a timeless beat get the VA off to a flying start! 'Dont Know It' by Highrise is a tune perfectly showcasing the production aesthetic of late 90s garage. Up next is Sky Joose with 'On The Shores', a brooding yet soulful entry into the compilation, oozing with funky keys, organs and a bassline that hits as hard as the track’s full throttle beat. Flipping over onto the B side we find Johnny U-Tah who drops some classic re-pitched and time-stretched vocal business with 'Voices In My Head': a fantastic, high energy interpretation of the genre. Rolling up next is 'Melatron' by The Thunderkats, a bumpy, full-on piano infused number bringing solid garage vibes from start to finish. Completing the VA is Jay Ward and 'Everything That I Need', a sublimely executed track bristling with luscious vocals, an infectious beat and bassline to match. Get involved!

London’s Will Hofbauer has been steadily making a name for himself in the UK capital over the past few years via his own Third Place Records and Co-Select, an event series he runs alongside his collective with a focus on gender equality in DJ Culture, curating back to back sets with a balanced representation. Here we see Will mark a new milestone in his career with his production debut via New York’s HOMAGE Records, while hotly tipped producer and DJ Desert Sound Colony steps in on remix duties, known for his material on labels such as Scissor & Thread, Me Me Me, Futureboogie and of course his own Holding Hands.

The original mix of ‘Caned’ leads the release, laid out over six minutes with crunchy off- kilter drums, gritty disorted bass tones and wandering arpeggios all dynamically unfolding and evolving throughout. The Desert Sound Colony Remix follows next (seeing early support in from Bradley Zero, Gilles Peterson and Tristan Da Cunha), the fellow London-based artist stamps his own mark on things with a UKG tinged vibe via heavily swung drums, heady synth flutters and a menacing bass line all weaved together amongst the shuffled groove.

‘Whiplash’ follows next, fusing choppy amen breaks and bumpy broken drums alongside bubbling synths and an infectious vocal hook before ‘Rocks Off’ rounds out the release, this time round embracing a raw 4/4 approach rhythmically while a stab- led bass line, vacillating resonant synths and airy string sequences further fuel the murky, hypnotic groove.
