Part 1: The Burning Car
Welcome to the Cozy Corner, where I discuss things going on around the internet space. 

If you’ve had the pleasure of scrolling on tiktok in the past couple months, you might’ve noticed a specific cup stealing the show. Specifically, a very tall metal tumbler called the Stanley cup. 

Although it seems like your average water bottle at first glance, with basic features such as keeping drinks cool or hot, the internet community places high value on their Stanley cups. But let’s slow down for a minute and talk about where it all began.

In November 2023, a TikTok of a woman’s car fire went viral. She records herself checking the car’s remnants the next day, and she finds what seems like a miracle. 
Among the wreckage was a fully intact like-normal orange Stanley cup in the front seat cupholder. She even shakes the cup to prove that there are ice cubes still inside.

This viral TikTok has now amassed 9.2 million likes and nearly 500 thousand shares, resulting in a response from the CEO of Stanley himself, offering to send her new Stanley cups and replace her car that she lost in the fire. 

This singular TikTok interaction caused a ripple effect into the future, where a cup that was once marketed to worksite men suddenly transitioned into being a staple for young women.
 
Part 2: The Stanley Cup Craze
So now you know how it all began. But why didn’t the Stanley trend die off after the TikTok did? An article from CNN featuring a marketing professor from the University of Buffalo can help explain why.

Charles Lindsey says: 
“It’s just a cup, but it represents something symbolic. It represents something aspirational. It represents being part of a group, an affiliation or a lifestyle.”

And he might be totally right. When you see a popular influencer using a Stanley, what are some thoughts and assocations that arise?

Maybe it’s a social signifier, implying sustainability and style? Or perhaps the owner of the Stanley seems health-conscious and orderly?

An article from Bon Appetit confirms these connotations of the viral Stanley cup, especially for millenial women. 

Although we don’t know for sure what reasons that each individual has for purchasing this expensive water bottle, it’s clear that social media and TikTok played a part in its exposure and brand.
