Beautifully filmed by New Zealand nature photographer Richard Sidey over the past decade throughout the Earth’s polar regions, Speechless – The Polar Realm is a non-verbal visual meditation of light, life, loss and wonder at the ends of the globe.

In search of an individual viewing experience aided by the absence of spoken narrative, Speechless – The Polar Realm guides this cinematic voyage through both powerful imagery of the natural world and a poignant, original score from composer and sound artist, Miriama Young, performed by Mirabai Peart and Ryan Francesconi.

Debussy | Prelude No.7 'Ce qu'a vu le vent d'ouest'

A flock of the critically endangered species, estimated 12 individuals, paid a rare  the Hunter coast to feed on flowering Swamp Mahogany. Resident for a week they remained in a small area of forest including Banksia, Angophora and E. robusta. This was a ? feeding or contact call. two males calling from mid-canopy taking a break from the blossom to sally and glean insects and sing.

Regent Honeyeater visits Myall Lakes

This is the song of the Uralba population of Alberts Lyrebirds. It is different and distinct from the songs of Alberts Lyrebirds from other regions. This is a population which has been isolated by habitat clearing for 120 years. At last count/survey there was a single male calling. This song is sadly likely to disappear forever when this (quite possibly) lone bird dies.

Alberts Lyrebird Uralba Whistle Song

An Alberts Lyrebird calls and responds to a distant male at dawn in Border Ranges NP in a semicircular gully in the closed canopy rainforest which creates a lovely reverberant space. Yellow-throated Scrubwren, and Brown Cuckoo Dove and a pouched-frog (Assa darlingtoni)also sing.

ALBERTS LYREBIRD IN Rainforest AMPHITHEATRE

As daylight fades and the mist rolls in on the warm temperate rainforest mountain top, 2 endangered species combine with the evening breeze through the canopy above: Loveridges Mountain Frog (Philoria loveridgei) is a rare and endangered species that build hidden nests or burrows in moist soaks and bogs. The pitch of their somewhat flatulent call varies depending on how deep within the burrow the frog is located. The Rufous scrub bird is a cryptic largely ground dwelling species which is often heard within its very limited range, but seldom seen. Its call is very variable but always strident and penetrating and unmistakeable in tone.

ENDANGERED ENSEMBLE

A cool autumn dawn at 1000m asl, the Green Catbirds are feeding lower in the canopy than usual, and quite close to my microphones. In the background Alberts lyrebird and Bassian Thrush are calling among others. Catbirds are often hard to pick out amongst the green foliage but the call is, well, distinctive. The high-pitched "pip" call is also the Catbird, specifically its contact call.
