Album Description:
Eliot Lipp’s career spans nearly 20-years and was initially defined by his dusty instrumental hip-hop productions. Since his debut release on Scott Herren’s (Prefuse 73) Eastern Developments label in 2004, Lipp has explored several styles including electro-funk, disco, and techno. His eccentric productions on The Outside, released in 2008 on Mush records, and the big-room dance sensibilities of Shark Wolf Rabbit Snake, released on Pretty Lights Music in 2012, saw Lipp building fan bases in connected yet distinct audiences. 

Skywave, released in 2017 on Young Heavy Souls, marks Lipp’s last solo full-length effort. In the five years following, Lipp would continue to highlight his versatility as a producer through a number of collaborations and side projects. 

As one half of Minutes Unlimited, a group formed with fellow electronic producer Michna (Ghostly International), Lipp displays a talent for creating precise, shiny techno/trap that showcases both artists’ synth and drum machine dexterity. Eliot also provides the prefix for the appropriately named Lipphead, a collaborative effort with underground hip-hop and downtempo producer Blockhead. Lipphead’s loose and experimental approach to dance music stands in stark contrast to the cold, methodical tone of Minutes Unlimited. 

Somewhere in between and slightly off-center of these two sounds is Encounters, Lipp’s forthcoming full length LP. From laid-back downtempo cuts “Know By Now” and “The Lowdown” to choppy upbeat hip-hop instrumentals like “Guitar Maniacs”– Eliot condenses years of growth and influence into this expansive double LP. Comprised of 16 tracks, the sequencing of Encounters pulls from Lipp’s DJing experience, creating a seamless and cohesive listening experience from start to finish.

Chase Dobson is a Denver-based musician and engineer with a diverse catalog of releases spanning many genres of atmospheric electronic music. Over the last decade, he has performed integral roles as a touring synthesizer technician and playback programmer, traveling worldwide with chart-topping artists like Rihanna, Tycho and M83. Currently, Dobson is a touring tech and studio engineer for GRAMMY award winning Australian electronic act RÜFÜS DU SOL.

Now, Dobson is honing his sound with ‘The Mechanics of Time Travel’ – his debut with independent label Young Heavy Souls (Detroit, MI). The album was written during the COVID-19 shutdown, a time when he was forced to slow down and focus on original music. With touring opportunities halted and a room full of analog synths, Dobson produced ‘The Mechanics of Time Travel’, a hazy analog synth-driven soundscape that evokes nostalgia and a sense of wonder.

The record is an ambient and cinematic journey through the vastness of a universe in constant motion. From deep pulsing bass notes that evoke the endless expanse of space to subtle melodic washes of synthesizers, ‘The Mechanics of Time Travel’ is a work of art that rewards both close and distant listening.

On the intention behind his latest effort, Dobson says:

“I really set out to create the record I want to hear. My past releases relied on heavy editing and programming. Mechanics’ recording process relies far more on playing, and I believe it can be heard in the end result.”

With an extensive knowledge of composition and unparalleled technical skill, it’s no surprise that Chase Dobson has gained support from ReGen Magazine, 303 Magazine, and Westword.

Chase Dobson - The Mechanics of Time Travel

Lipphead is a production duo consisting of veteran producers @blockheadnyc and @eliotlipp creating eclectic instrumental hip hop that dances effortlessly between Blockhead's sample-based hip hop beats and Lipp's evolving synth-laden swing. Illustrated by artist Maddison Chaffer, the titular character serves as the group's mascot and as a tongue-in-cheek personification of the artist’s fused styles. In 2022, the pair released their debut LP ‘In the Nude’ via Michigan label Young Heavy Souls to critical acclaim.
 
Building on that success, Lipphead is back with 10 new tracks and a fresh selection of singles to introduce the forthcoming record entitled ‘From the Back’. Kicking off with the irresistible disco soul of ‘Midnight Brain to Georgia,’ the duo hits the ground running. The second single effortlessly guides the listener through a showcase of fluttering flute samples, jittery synthesizer flourishes, and a bassline that is sure to please even the most selective funk enthusiasts.

Throughout ‘From The Back’, fans can expect an even groovier spin on their genre-blending mix of downtempo, hip-hop, and electro-funk, along with a healthy dose of the duo’s trademark sense of humor.
 
Reflecting on the album, Lipp states that “Lipphead really starts to perfect their stylistic fusion on this record. Plenty of oddball beats and goofy samples, but this time there’s an upbeat funk vibe throughout. ‘From The Back’ is basically a window to what goes on in Lipphead’s wild-ass brain.”

Counting BBC Radio, Thissongissick, Scratched Vinyl, and Music Shelf with Mustard as supporters, there’s no denying that Lipphead is quickly cementing its place as one of the most exciting new underground electronic acts.

While living in Los Angeles, Eliot Lipp earned the nickname “Young Alpine” from his friends – a nod to his Northwest roots in Tacoma, Washington. His latest single Young Alpine is aptly titled, for it recalls a younger version of the artist and the music he used to make when he was just starting out.

The track is a fusion of synths, guitars, and organic samples drizzled over a laid-back groove that has been Lipp’s trademark for years. He continues to experiment with new ideas and trying out different styles, but sometimes a song like this just comes together naturally.

Young Alpine is featured on Lipp’s forthcoming full length LP Encounters, set to release on November 11th digitally and Spring 2023 on yellow vinyl via Young Heavy Souls.

The second single to be taken from their forthcoming full-length LP ‘From The Back’ – slated for release via Detroit label Young Heavy Souls in July 2023 – ‘Unisax Romper’ highlights the pair’s masterful ability to create a captivating listening experience without taking themselves too seriously. Perfectly capturing their sound, Lipp remarks: 

“‘Unisax Romper’ really packs a lot of instruments into one song. I’m not sure how they managed to fit them all into their studio; a string section, flutes, drum kit, congas, a wild saxophone player, and they even had room leftover for some bass-slappin’. The lonely piano outro really tops it off. This is a hot bowl of funk stew, a crock pot of lipp-smackin’ goodness.”

With their characteristic production prowess, Lipphead has once again pushed the boundaries of electronic music, showcasing their ability to blend genres and create something entirely fresh and exciting. ‘Unisax Romper’ is a testament to their innovative approach to music-making, as they continue to push the envelope with each collaboration.

Pop riff à la Cleaners From Venus and The Cure, Zilched's melodic approach to songwriting expertly mediates the tortured aspects of human experience with the utmost tenderness.

“I wrote most of the song at Elmwood Cemetery in Detroit around the time it had been flooding in the city,” Drallos reveals. “Everything felt biblical and significant during that time, which informed the tone of nearly every song on the record.”

Accompanied by a video directed by New York-based filmmaker Alex Ross Perry (Her Smell, Pavement: Harness Your Hopes), this single offers fans a first glimpse into the poetic lyricism and creative vision that Zilched exercises on Earthly Delights. Listeners can expect to be treated to a series of genre-spanning singles that showcase Drallos’ musical range before the album’s official release in August 2023.

With catchy beats, melodic synths and airy vocals, Vancouver-via-Brazil shoegaze band Palm Haze makes a comeback with their new single, “Blue Moon Bay” via Young Heavy Souls.

As Pitchfork pointed out, the band is "capable of just as furious a swirl" as My Bloody Valentine and Ride, blending alt rock, shoegaze and trip-hop influences to create a sound that's somehow heavy, dark and tranquil all at once. 

Blue Moon Bay is a song about infatuation and short-ended relationships. About being strangers, yet in love. It features an enigmatic and upbeat soundscape that captures the bittersweet realization that summer is coming to an end. With hazy synths and overlapping vocals by Lucas and Anna, the track immerses listeners in a dreamy atmosphere where emotions are as fleeting as the season itself. The song's blend of shimmering textures and poignant lyrics evokes the ephemeral magic of brief encounters and the lingering sense of what could have been.

Young Heavy Skulls II (Halloween Compilation Mix)

Primer is the alias and creative project of vocalist/producer Alyssa Midcalf.

With her debut album, Novelty, Midcalf showcases her skills as both a vocalist and songwriter. The sound of the album, which was composed heavily on a Roland Juno synthesizer, is characterized by driving drum beats, sub-heavy bass lines and shimmering synth leads. Midcalf’s vocals are airy yet dynamic, binding her songs together with a reverberating surrealism. To see these elements on full display, look no further than her haunting cover of The Beach Boys song Til I Die. 

Partly inspired by the indie time travel film of the same name, Midcalf says she was also drawn to the sense of futurism the word Primer invokes. This is fitting with the tone of her debut album, which brings to mind images of a dystopian disco. 
 
Midcalf, who gained some attention as one half of the duo Parts, made her introduction as Primer with the single Anesthetized, released on YHS Records in 2018. Her full album, Novelty, is set to be released on YHS Records in early 2019.

For Matt Black, known professionally as Peace To Mateo, Slow Trip Home is an exercise in minimalist production. By stripping back the dense, intricate arrangements of his previous effort Some Strange Reason, Peace aims to conjure a more focused sound, and in turn unearth the best elements of each track.

Slow Trip Home draws influence from various lofi genres, video game soundtracks, and downtempo music, while keeping a distinct voice rooted in boom-bap era hip-hop.
