“Times Are Changing” sets the tone for this album project that collects the work of nearly 15 years, a gritty vision of modern-retro soul that throws a reverent nod to its Mizell Brothers and Patrick Adams influences as it brings the sound into the future. Recorded with all live instrumentation and mixed tough for the dance floor, this limited 12” boasts an extended original and instrumental on the A side, and a huge remix from Aussie synth wizard Harvey Sutherland on the flip that highlights the rich instrumentation and extremely catchy vocal hook. Bill Brewster makes a triumphant return to Sprechen with a recently rediscovered collection of cuts he & (one half of Futureshock) mega producer Alex Tepper crafted under the name Hotel Motel, 3 tracks of straight up house music with a disco edge that are packing some serious dance floor wobbling destructive vibes! All hail the ‘Frottage Pie’ E.P.

Going To A Go Go is a slo-mo chugger which sounds like an escapee from the glory years of Compass Point sessions with snappy & jackin percussion alongside spaced out synth lines & a mutant bass line. Perfect warm up psyched out brilliance. All that’s missing is Grace belting out a few lines as an accompaniment!

Hubbards Hills is just over 8 mins of sheer brilliance. Disco licked house music that is done properly and which hooks you in from the first cued up beat. A piano led breakdown creeps up from out of nowhere with catchy y as heck ‘nah nah hey hey’ style vocal before slamming back in. Straight up-simple and blooming perfect.

To close off the party we have Without You which demands you take the stance of heads down, arms aloft and prepare to grind a hole in the dance floor! As simply led at Hubbards Hills, this is a proper late night house hero with a 3 note sustained synth. Line that firmly wedges in your head alongside a ‘classic’ house rolling bass line. Perfection!

Co-showrunner and resident @wahinedj returns for her monthly mix on 4.8.24. In the second hour, she welcomed guest Peter Croce to the show for the second time. The Detroit DJ/producer, musician, event producer and label owner, Peter Croce back to Spin City. His label Rocksteady Disco has been holding it down by and for Detroit for the last 10 years and was very notably declared label of the year by Gilles Peterson's Worldwide FM. That is quite the nod and Peter is quite the DJ.

As the title suggests, this EP showcases solo tracks from two artists - Vintage Music main man Sunner Soul and his pal TSDC - as well as a collaboration between the pair. That track, 'Feel Alright', is arguably the EP highlight - a warm, dreamy, sample rich chunk of rolling deep house bliss piled high with nods to classic US deep house and garage-house. That said, the solo tracks are genuinely tasty, too. Sunner Soul contributes the chunkier but no less sample-heavy deep house bump of 'Double Delight', while TSDC's 'It's Like That' cannily combines raw, stabbing bass and heady hip-hop vocal samples with deep and drowsy chords and tasty 118 bpm house beats.

Sunner Soul pres Double Delight EP [VMR113]

"I was recently reminded by a video shared by the great Karizma of gospel singer Diane Williams & friends dancing along to a track he sampled her on (Work It Out) that in 2011 I released a record with Jon Reynolds' Landed label. On the 'B' side was a track called 'Sugar Hill' which borrowed heavily from Jazz musician, composer and bandleader Charles Mingus, with a groove based around loops and chops of his band and his drummer Dannie Richmond (a hero), which built to a social commentary monologue from the great man himself. I'd also taken a loop of a gospel chant from a Taj Mahal record which ran underneath. I made a very simple dub of just the drums and chants primarily as a 'DJ tool', either to mix with or use as a 'bridging track' in sets. There wasn't room for this on the vinyl release (which was mastered by the legendary Geoff Pesche at Abbey Rd.!). So it always remained in the personal 'digital' bag... until now! Please enjoy, have fun and spread the Love and the Word!"
