An elegiac suspension through city landscapes in decay, weeds growing through vandalised ruins and fallen grandeur, BJ Holy’s debut album ‘Broken Horns’ offers an effusive take on endings, heartache and rebirth. Embracing solitude, rebuilding and the presence of what remains in the wake, euphoric beats tug below broody distillations of folkloric references and flugelhorn.

Opening with ‘Lowlanding’, a rework of 17th century sea shanty ballad ‘Lowlands’, the album blurs deeper and deeper into evocations of desire and ecstatic release. ‘Xo xo’ bids goodbye to broken hearts, whilst ‘Clean slate’ emerges as an airy counterpart to the subterranean emotional depths of ‘Earth sign’ (co-written with Virginia Waters). ‘DJ and I’m dancing’ is an angsty, industrial rumination on the alienating rotations of London’s side hustles. The album closes with ‘Anchored in love’, featuring Glasgow-based musician & choreographer, Magnus Westwell on strings. Returning again and again to a feeling of being fixed in romance through its cyclical, repetitive, looping composition, BJ Holy ushers in a hopeful glimpse of something new.

In the few years they’ve been active, Haitian-American musician Bapari has amassed quite the CV. They release their 'Oasis' EP on Rabit and Lane Stewart’s haute Halcyon Veil label, contributed production on the title track of FKA Twigs’ Eusexua album, presided over their “Puffy” show on NTS radio since 2019 and soundtracked campaigns for the likes of YSL Beauty and smart ring company Ōura. Currently splitting their time between Los Angeles and New York, the DJ and producer is also in increasing demand overseas. International highlights to date have included a Halcyon Veil showcase at London’s ICA and parties at Garage Noord in Amsterdam, Tresor and RSO in Berlin, Athens Conservatoire in the Greek capital and Morse in Tokyo. Their fourth and most recent EP Evermore marks their haunting vocal debut set to downtempo experimental club/pop; a crystalline vision heralding a future star. 

Their Center Booth set is a whirlwind of disparate styles and genres, but the journey is rendered velvety smooth via Bapari’s sure-handed, barely-there mixing. All tracks share a tough, dark aesthetic, from the breaksy, synthetic pop of horsegiirL’s “take it offff” to the plangent bass and beepy constellations on Drexciya’s “Hydro Theory”. From here we move through trancey gabber, sinewy psytrance, liquid braindance, a glitchy rave belter sampling Opus III’s “It’s A Fine Day”, and the set’s highlight in Bapari’s own “Drifter”, a barnstorming broken beat odyssey that packs oceans into its three short minutes. Elsewhere you’ll hear Enya, Priori’s delightfully disorienting “Pareidolia” and frenetic footwork to close out a riveting set that’s all hard edges, brittle textures, and silky transitions.
