Solid Steel (28th November) This week in Hour 1 it's Tessela in the mix with a live recording for us from a recent festival. He's had a residency on Radio 1, releases on R & S, Punch Drunk & Poly Kicks and a string of remixes, including last month's excellent 'Aztec Chant' remix for recent guest Peverelist. We don't have a track list, but we do know it's a tough mix and features tracks from Jerome Hill, Dan Physics, Helena Hauff and Floorplan. He told us;
"This mix was recorded live at Austria's Elevate Festival in a long stone tunnel carved into a hill for use as an air raid shelter during the second world war. Source Direct was in charge of the lighting"

Diplo & Friends: Tiga Guest Mix (7/12/14)

Nathan Gregory Wilkins and Richard X aka Cowboy Rhythmbox have created their own lane within house and techno. The latest signing to Phantasy Sound (who have released music from the likes of Erol Alkan, Daniel Avery and Conan Mockasin to name a few) make deep, arpeggiated, trance inducing beats that we cant get enough of. They really caught our attention with their single Shake and with the release of their latest We Got The Box EP, Nathan (who also produces show music for Marc By Marc Jacobs, Giles and Sibling amongst others) has mixed a selection of music that has inspired the singular Cowboy Rhythmbox sound. A sound they describe as drawing on a collective love of outsider house, bargain bin cut-outs, hard drive debris, rudimentary jack trax, obscure TV themes, Euro disco, EBM, Detroit Techno, the Smith & Wesson Model 3 and horses.

For the best part of a decade now, the man born Rohan Walder has been turning out interesting and arresting electronic music that veers from acid to ghetto, bass heavy to beat driven. Always laying down groves with a jacking edge and roughen texture, he is a contemporary innovator who is just as unique a proposition in the DJ booth. 

This new podcast proves that and wastes no time in getting going. Right from the off it is a hurried and physical affair that never sits still for a second through the ensuing hour. The whole thing is tightly mixed with plenty of energy and proceeds at never less than 100 miles an hour. Every track is a fulsome, busy and brutal offering that cannot fail to get your attention on a Tuesday morning.

Daniel Avery - Electronic Explorations #373

It's a bit of a wonky 'Go Doof Doof' this time around, featuring a B2B mix from the UK's Gerry Read and Canada's Kevin McPhee. From one side of the court we have Gerry's distinct sideways house, which pulses into Kevin's rhythmic sonic dubs. The pair have worked together in the past with the release of 'Demolition Man' in 2011 amongst other projects. Born in the Russian port city of Vladivistok, near the North Korean and Chinese borders, then moving near Moscow as a teenager, Proxy makes dance music that’s relentless and brutal, but just on the right side of the line to keep you listening. He’s also a delightful character, making pronouncements like, “Men are disposable and weak. Why must art and dance music always seek to affirm that they have such great value? They do not, and will receive no such validation from me,” as he told MTV Iggy. The second half of his two-part debut album, called Music from the Eastblock Jungles (a Prodigy reference), comes out next week via Dim Mak and Turbo Recordings, and it’s a dark, raving monster. What are the Eastblock Jungles? What are they like?
- It’s full of contrasts. Extremely rich and equally poor. It is at once beautiful as it is repellant. These contrasts extend to the world of music. The landscape is ridden with shameful clones of existing international stars. There are dubiously entrenched local DJs who have no discernible musical background, but end up playing with Tiësto, while scores of talented producers could not even barter their music for prison-grade cigarettes. The clubs desperately grasp at some notion of glamour, which to them seems to mean dire commercial music, “cocktails” and girls in dresses. It is a thin illusion, the poor attempting to resemble their imagined betters. To me, this is not serious work; it is well beneath the position I have fought to attain. That said, where I am from inspires me on all levels.

 Sometimes your music seems less suited for a nightclub than it is for fighting. What will the revolution that Proxy soundtracks be like?
- A pretty heavy revolution. I like people making their own judgments of my music. It’s a great escape. I write for people to enjoy, but I also like the music to retain integrity. It will be a BIG revolution, but one full of hope NOT anger! 

Do you feel hope for the world?
- It’s very important to feel hope for the world. There is a lot of destruction in this world, but we must not forget there is a lot of beauty on this planet. We always have to have hope. My music is hope.  

What do you do besides music? 
-Films, computer games (I’m good!) and just the usual things with close friends. It’s important to have these people in your life.
