Lantern Listenings - November

Ibibio Sound Machine are set to release their debut LP through Soundway Records. Fronted by British / Nigerian vocalist Eno Williams, they combine elements of West African highlife, disco, post-punk & psychedelic electro soul. Preceded by the pulsating first single 'Let's Dance', ‘Ibibio Sound Machine’ will be released 17th March.

Folk stories, recounted to Eno by her family as a child in her mother's South-Eastern Nigerian Ibibio language form the creative lyrical fabric of the album. A large dose of electronic elements and an approach as influenced by London as much as by West Africa, give the vocals and guitar lines space to breath without being overwhelmed.

From the banging sub-bass of 'Lets Dance' to the spiritual, gospel-tinged notes of the album's opening track 'Voice of the Bird', the band have turned in a dynamic and, at times, beautiful take on modern afro-soul music.

The 8-piece live band made their official live debut at this year's Transmusicales in France and will be a name to look out for in 2014.

In terms of people I have met since I started the label, Ben Woods was probably one of the first. Having tagged along with The Black Tambourines to the release party for aih02, he drunkenly haggled me down to 20p for a New Years Evil shirt. Since that formative night our paths have crossed many more times and with each occasion he seems to make more of an impression. First with the bluesy Lost Dawn on aih05, he then joined Gorgeous Bully on drums for the recent full band EP and most recently he's been tagging along with Pastel Colours who were also recent Pizza Club members.

This makes it sound like he's here on merit alone, but his latest incarnation as The Golden Dregs (and his first infront of the kit) is his finest innings yet. Recently described by NME as anti-garage (I'm not sure what that means either), 'The Life Aquatic' is a downbeat ditty, which despite Ben's talk of feeling weighed down, has a rather soothing effect. Maybe it's the husky tones. I'm not sure of the title's link to the wonderful Wes Anderson film, but you can certainly imagine it being perfectly matched with shots of Bill Murray looking longingly out to sea, having a smoke.

So a friend said I could not write a 'happy' song - I said 'All my songs are happy', he replied 'and not sarcastic!' I'm like what sarcasm? Here is the result so I hope you all like it. Was walking with my kids to get a smoothie and it was just an amazing day, and I said something to the effect of "If this were the last day on earth, it would not be a bad way to go out" something my mother would say when I was growing up. So I was like hey, f-you dude- I can do this- so In your face- dear friend.

King of Cats - the project of Brighton-cum-Oxford songwriter Max Levy - will release a debut album, 'Working Out', on 29th September through Art Reeks, the collaborative label by Art Is Hard and Reeks of Effort Records - pre order is available from https://artreeks.bandcamp.com now.

Recorded by Johnathan Coddington in a big room with crystals, 'Working Out' is influenced variously by Internet radio, indeterminacy, Reeks of Effort (bands and people), the ability to buy guns from the internet, the muscular form and the village of Eynsham. It is a complex, frustrated and often very funny record. Lyrical and sonic comparisons can be made to Stephin Merrit, Scout Niblett, Alisdair Roberts or Frankie Cosmos and elements of the D.I.Y indiepop and punk scenes King of Cats inhabits often shine through. But the sound and personality of “Working Out” lacks a derivative quality, partly due to Max’s totally distinctive, powerful singing voice.
 
While not a wholly conceptual record, “Working Out” does centre on a few things which have been present in Max’s writing of late. “Most of the songs have something to do with the fear of being trapped in a feeble body, dreams of a muscular form and the relationship between one’s environment, one’s body and one’s being an idiot. I don’t work out a lot, but I think about it often”. Friction between ideas of bodily perfection and emotional satisfaction is something that he was trying to understand in the years writing these songs. “I didn’t get very far”.
 
Taken from the album, 'Dead Lamb' is streaming online now with Levy and bandmates Owen Williams (Joanna Gruesome, Grubs) and Adam Cave playing a number of live dates in the UK through September.

An appropriately named song this week considering all my time seems to be spent planning my impending move from Bristol to Exeter. Excuse the tenuous link but it seems as though Wulfs have also done their fair bit of moving around. Just 19, they met at college in Warwickshire and have spent the summer holed up in each other's bedrooms recording dreamy guitar pop. Come September they will both be moving again and relocating to Leeds. Moving Out is their very first track and we're delighted to be releasing it as part of our Pizza Club.

Moving out is a beautifully restrained affair that floats along at a dreamy pace. Imagine feeling extremely woozy and spinning yourself round and round whilst all the time feeling like you're going to spiral out of control but instead seeing everything slowly glide past in a dream like state. That's basically what Moving Out sounds like (plus some wolf like howls thrown in for good measure). I don't think they have a Facebook page or anything yet, but you can follow them on SoundCloud here. Allo Darlin's new album "We Come From The Same Place" combines the eagerness, urgency and immediacy of their 2010 self-titled debut with the contemplation, sophistication and ambition of their 2012 follow-up "Europe," and yet it goes beyond either both sonically and in the songs. It was written at a time of considerable change for songwriter Elizabeth Morris, a time during which she fell in love, moved to Italy and got married - not that that seems to have hindered the songwriting process, as Elizabeth explains, "So many things have happened since I first wrote the songs that make up this album, it's difficult to remember back to where it all began. The songs were written very quickly, during a period when I found writing songs very easy, whereas I often find songwriting very difficult. Some of the songs were written so fast I can't even really remember writing them. The songs were a joy to write, and writing them made me feel better about lots of things."

Among the highlights of the album is "Bright Eyes", a duet with guitarist Paul Rains. Elizabeth again, "I wanted to write another duet, but the only problem with doing that is that when you play live it's very rare that the person you recorded it with can be there. So I thought it would be great to write a song with Paul singing the other part. I love Paul's singing and I wanted to hear him do it more, so it's quite selfish really!" Another standout is the Twin Peaks-referencing "Half-Heart Necklace", based on a true story from Elizabeth’s hometown. "There had been some murders, and this girl who was my age was missing and presumed killed. It turned out she had been hiding for years in her boyfriend's cupboard, and she was charged for wasting police time". 
 
Other notable tracks include the rollicking "Kings and Queens", inspired by a show they played in the USA with their friends and kindred spirits The Wave Pictures, and "Romance and Adventure", originally earmarked for a film soundtrack and written in response to a challenge from Paul to write a pop song in a minor key. Bass player Bill Botting sums up Elizabeth’s remarkable songwriting ability by saying, "The key to Elizabeth’s songwriting appeal is that she’s so adept at pinpointing certain ideas and moods; leaving one city and finding a new one and realising that beginnings and endings have a lot in common."

The truism is that third albums are difficult beasts, but by remaining true to themselves Allo Darlin’ have side-stepped the pitfalls to produce a wonderful record - thoughtful and exciting and exquisitely played – that will please their existing army of fans and newcomers alike. On first reading the album’s title may seem enigmatic, but from the very personal nature of Elizabeth Morris’ finely drawn vignettes to the more universal connections between the band and their audience, its meaning will be obvious to all who fall under the spell of this magical band.

We were honoured to be involved in the Africa Express Presents: 'Maison des Jeunes' project  - an album of collaborations recorded over 7 days in a temporary studio at the Maison des Jeunes youth club in Bamako, Mali. The album features a new wave of contemporary Malian musicians including Gambari, Bijou and Songhoy Blues collaborating with the likes of Two Inch Punch, Damon Albarn, Brian Eno, Nick Zinner and Ghostpoet.

The album exists in a stunning deluxe vinyl edition and CD but the richness of the sessions continues to bear forth fresh music. The tracks that we share with you today are exclusive bonus tracks from those original sessions in Bamako, produced by Lil Silva, Two Inch Punch and Jeff Wootton (Gorillaz).

Songhoy Blues have announced details of the release of their debut album, Music In Exile, which is released on Transgressive Records on Monday 23rd February 2015.

Now largely living on the margins of the West African nation whose political and cultural life is dominated by the Bambara people of the south, they nonetheless retain a fierce pride in their history, beliefs and music.
