Putting a pigeon amongst the cats we are back with that good shit. An out of step, incidental artefact of peaceful sophistry: YS - Brutal Flower (2 x “12 LP). A no airs and graces piece of cool future-proof ambience. A modern ballad for brave young clubbers, local pubbers, slipstream warriors, and emotional doggers. 

The distinctive aesthetic hallmarks of YS are all here: slabs of urban flavor from emotional interior; raw data straight from the interface. Both hopeful and mourning: this is the lay of the land in Brutal Flowers. It feels young in an ancient sort of way: pure as first snow. Unfolding with the patience, tranquility and the expansive poise of a work that is for now and always. Pulsating and gently to assured - a flickering skyline, swarming with warm memories. 

An aesthetic reflection of a creative process that is delicate and restless. Created in the edges, where long distances, fast cities and global melancholia are wrought large. Burning the midnight oil Berlin-Singapore style: from real to reel. A sentimental exercise of modern faith by old friends. With a nudge and a wink, Brutal Flowers is a (de)coded map of memories wavering with familiar intrigue. Patient listeners and the already initiated will be rewarded on revists - as playful & profound as you please, as deep as the heart. 

The scathe that cuts is clean and deep. There are no sleight of hands to be found in this opus, only hearts are worn on the sleeve here.

There were little pieces and fragments which presented themselves to him every now and then. They were bittersweet in the sense that they reminded him of a more joyous and hopeful time but in the present he couldn’t quite recall what they were and how they connected to his world. Some said he had a fading memory but that was hard to fathom when he was blessed with the occasional flicker of her face.

He used to recall her every smile in his dreams, the way in which her lips curled and the depths to her laugh. Now it was only her eyes he could revisit from time to time.

Apparently it would all fade into nothing entirely with time. Yet there would always be that piece of her which lived on, dancing on the periphery of his mind.

YS is set to release a new album on Berlin based record label Pace Yourself – the record features an intelligent collection of Electronic music which meanders and wanders between Trip Hop, Bass, Breaks and beyond. This is perhaps the labels most accomplished release to date.

‘I would say that I work from a mentally amoral place, people can think of it what they want. Sometimes it’s just a feeling and I just need to make something so I can look at it. I try not to judge what I am doing. I want to embarrass myself more, and entertain myself. Occasionally I think I am doing something smart, but to me nothing is smart. Sometimes what I’m saying is like a thank you and a middle finger at the same time. Sometimes I am confusing a message’ - Alex Bienstock

These two cuts emerge as dense atmospheric dirges. A syndicate of sound & stream-of-consciousness spoken word deliveries caught in the flow-state, probing and riding the sensor ’Poetic logic in chaos’ A seepage of information, jumbled buzz words, thoughts & statements, humor & doom. Processings from the overload, floating in the concentrated sonic space of elucidated pathos. A vivid monologue in fleet, where nothing lands on concrete. It doesn’t matter what it 'means', as long as we can get between things.

After a call for collaboration at the tail end of 2020, these vocals were screen captured by YS from one of Bienstock’s now Zucc’d instagram profiles. This release is a diverging path from his project ESCBAS, in which Bienstock forms many groups with different concepts and people. “This is done even if collaborators used shared material differently for their own purposes, or sees the project as something completely different. The philosophical purpose of doing this is to create and support an anarchic anything-goes mentality. The result is an etheric and intimate collective, with works remaining highly personal and singular. Works that are post-genre at it’s core and meta-schizophrenic in it’s post-ironic awareness” These recordings eventually became - 'Free' & 'Apples' - Available digitally and on a limited edition run of 7inch Records. And from here in the album unfolds with the patience, tranquility and the expansive poise of a work that is for now and always. Pulsating gently to assured ending with ‘Be Together’ - a flickering skyline, swarming with warm memories. In between there’s flashes of heartbreak reminiscent of Beltran's Ten Days of Blue and Blunt’s Stone Island (‘Look Up’ feels like a sort of spiritual successor to ‘Wake up’), that being said, when push comes to shove it only it ever flirts with its own reality.

PREMIERE : YS - Untethered

'Non Partial' is the latest release from YS. Music made during 2023, through the online exchange of files, finally realised in real life during the dead of winter in Berlin at Studio Asbestos. An epic mini-album condensed into 4 tracks exhibiting both bold and obfuscated plunderphonics. Looted accapellas invoke the likes of Lil B and DnB vocal legend Robert Manos. These are reimagined, crafted over sound collages and emotive synth work. Dramaturgy with an emphasise mostly on chordal composition. Fabricated soundscapes in the ‘real world’. Each sound work is also accompanied by a video. The result is unclassifiable audio/visual media works about nature & dissolution.

Somewhere, out there upon the horizon was something more, something beautiful. It could be achieved, not only through hope alone but by a magical dream, something which they shared. If it were meant to be, a way out of this place, then that was all that they could hope for. The white clouds hung thick in the evening sky as the heat still burnt down from the heavens up above, this place was a barren land, a desolate destination built only for outcasts and lost souls. It was here that they wandered and weaved a path towards a better future. 

Pace Yourself is a party series and record label based out of Berlin, the next EP from the label comes in the form of something intriguing and mysterious. A 12" from YS, of whom we know little but receive a lot. A promising release purpose built for the well listened dancefloor.
