Growing up with traditional Chinese music is never easy for me because I was dreaming of playing piano or/and becoming a conductor in a choir or orchestra in my childhood that I thought that’s cool but is conflicting with the style of music my family plays. 

I remember that was a hot and humid summer in taiwan, I was in my seventh grade. I stayed at my aunt’s house in a valley in the countryside. My aunt played her chinese dulcimer aka Yangqin (揚琴) and Guzheng (古箏) every morning and every afternoon; besides her daughters, my cousins, played guzheng (古箏) and erhu (二胡) that I recently finally remember she plays that mysterious instrument! 

What a journey brought a little girl from that day to where I am now. And I never knew one day I want to play chinese music more than play piano. Here is my story and the idea of my Chinese techno mix coming from at Lion’s Den in Chinatown Lion's Den on November 18, 2021.  I am not a fan of live recordings. Things that happen live during a set don't convey the impact of experiencing it live. I played some instruments, eq and volumes that don't translate into recordings. However, it was a fun night and I got to play alongside Soji violin and Al Yu on didgeridoo in chinatown. Hope you dig the mix.

Hailing from Taipei, Taiwan, a city with a thriving nightlife that goes until the wee hours of the morning, Yuka grew up with the rise of the electronic music scene in Asia. Yuka cut her teeth as a producer and DJ in London in Camden Town.

While living in London, Yuka effortlessly bridged the underground to the mainstream in a male-dominated industry. She has opened for electronic artists like Cosmic Gate, The Crystal Method, Audien, Valentino Khan, Poolside, and Eric Prydz, and also live bands such as ALO, The California Honeydrops, and Rebirth Brass Band all while playing in premiere venues and nightclubs all over London, East Asia, and North America. Yuka sings and plays the Chinese flute, and DJ’s regularly with live musicians who play the Guzheng (古箏), violin, bass guitar, trumpet, and didgeridoo.

Yuka’s career highlights include: playing on the Insomniac Camp OG stage at EDC Las Vegas, playing at Ministry of Sound (London), and playing at Oil (Shenzhen).
 
In 2019, she founded the artist exchange program Nu Tekno and has been hosting events regularly since 2020.  Nu Tekno currently has monthly residencies at the Endup, Lion’s Den and Mars Bar in San Francisco.
