µ-Ziq says hello again with 'Goodbye'. The six track EP is the first in a series of releases by Mike Paradinas this year, which are all centred around the 25th Anniversary Edition of 'Lunatic Harness’, his classic 1997 album. 

Inspired by going back through the archives while he was remastering the Lunatic Harness reissue, 'Goodbye' sees Mike revisiting the nineties, taking on jungle and it's precursor jungle tekno and upgrading them with the benefit of hindsight and contemporary software. Imbued with Mike's lush sense of melody and his knack for striking contrasts (don't be shocked to hear maudlin piano, 303 and amens in the same track), 'Goodbye' approaches these old genres like a sandpit, and stretches them in directions only Mike might take.

‘Through The Cortex’, @Terence-Fixmer's sixth solo album and his first on Ostgut Ton, is techno with a voice – or rather multiple voices – guiding listeners through hypnotic, space- and social-themed terrain as a kind of dark soundtrack to darker days. Across eight tracks at a compact but varied 40 minutes, the LP touches on an aesthetic hinted at in recent Ostgut Ton releases, revealing a sonic narrative through noisy, screaming synth/vocal riffs with a jagged, guitar-like post-punk sensibility. The mesmerizing Suicide-like pop of single “Accelerate” sees Terence Fixmer using his voice as an instrument, chanting the track’s ambiguous title in an invocation of systemic change/collapse.

A driving force within Paris’ contemporary techno revival, Shlømo remains an individual at the heart of the city’s bustling scene having swiftly established his own idiosyncratic sound with a myriad of releases on Delsin, Arts Collective and Soma and remixes for the likes of Oscar Mulero and Keith Carnal, plus reworks of his own productions from Norman Nodge, Johannes Heil, Tripeo and Donato Dozzy. As an artist, the Parisian performs both as Shlømo as well as his live ambient project under his full name, Shaun Baron-Carvais, with appearances from Berlin Atonal to Contact Tokyo, Berghain to Bassiani, Freerotation to Khidi, not to mention a residency at Concrete. Co-founder of Taapion alongside AWB and PVNV, a label celebrating its fifth anniversary having hosted some of the capital’s most respected names in François X, Antigone, Bambounou and Roman Poncet, his wealth of skills as a producer, performer and A&R are clear to see. Having taken many forms and directions across the past 24 months, Shlømo now presents his and Taapion’s debut album: 'Mercurial Skin'.

 “This album is a return to my roots, I wanted to express and translate the inspiration from my early years into one body of work. Having discovered electronic music through labels such as Warp and their releases from the late 90’s / early 00’s, I wanted to pay homage to the artists that have guided my sound, and the first part of the album is a tribute to these influences. I was also the only kid in class that would buy movie soundtracks or film scores, and I wanted to convey the memories and emotions from these records within the LP.” – Shlømo

Hot on the heels of his noteworthy digital debut for Mark Broom’s Beard Man label earlier this year, rising Brighton-based techno producer Rene Wise steps up on Mote Evolver with his second instalment, ‘Loud Colours’ EP. True to the DNA of Luke Slater’s imprint, Wise fires off a throbbing combination of big room-ready 4/4 mechanics, high-velocity bass and hypnotic acideries on a dopey, dubby flex – engineering the tools of chaos for a highly immersive dive into the basement’s teeming underworld and its nocturnal fauna. 

The howling ‘Wolf’ kicks things off on a pounding yet playful note with its hooting synths and behemoth kicks, whilst ‘Broken Motor’ sinks you into an obsessive swirl of lysergic arpeggios and rattling drums on automatic fire. Back to a more synthetic feel, ‘Loud Colours’ heads for the abysses of consciousness with its subtly interwoven skein of sonar-like bleeps, bloops and straight gut-churning stomp. Looping the loop, ‘Spirit Molecule’ tops the record off with more of a hip-swaying finish, dipping its latin-inflected batucada riddims in a thick sauce of brooding dub, eerie noises and altered vocal echoes out the murkiest of post-urban landscapes.
