Ochres for Flute, Oboe and Clarinet (2016)

In November 2019, at the funeral of my late mother, a white wagtail flew down on the roof of my father's car, which my mother loved. The bird doesn't usually fly down on a slippery surface, but it did and looked at all family members. This piece expresses through sound the momentary conversation between my mother and daughter, who has since become happy when she sees a white wagtail in the city, saying, "It's Grandma!" In September 2023, my daughter requested that I create a solo piece for her upcoming recital that sounds a little Japanese based on the Pentatonic scale. The three pitch classes from my daughter's name (7-2-5) were part of the scale. I added the other three pitch classes from my mother's names (10-4-5) to use as central cellular motives and mixed them into my sound world with my interpretation of "Japanese" to create the scene musically. My daughter premiered the piece in her senior violin recital on April 21st, 2024. I attended the concert, hoping my mother, who has become a little bird, would gently flutter down to her granddaughter's recital. This is a personal and the most special piece of mine. I hope this will be a short contemporary solo violin piece written in the 21st century, which will be a good first piece for young violinists to include in their recitals and auditions. The live recording was made at the premiere performance.

Sensitive Chaos

Born in Tokushima and now lives in Tokyo, Japan. MA (1996) & DMA (2000) from Columbia University. After completing BFA in piano at Osaka College of Music, she restarted her studies in music composition for ten years to come in the US, first to obtain BM from the Boston Conservatory at Berklee (1993). She then moved to New York City for graduate studies, with Tristan Murail, Jonathan Kramer, Brad Garton, and Fred Lerdahl at the GSAS of Columbia University. She also participated in historical Fontainebleau Schools of Music and Fine Arts in France (1997) to study with Philippe Leroux and Betsy Jolas, and private lessons with Isao Matsushita in Japan. Her music displays the wide perspective of music making including Japanese/Asian traditional instruments and forefront music technologies which she had creative training at the Computer Music Center of Columbia University. She has been a member of the ICMA, the EMS, the JSCM, the JFC, the JCMPC, the JSSA, and the IRCAM Forum.
